Found It - KB3121461 is bad

I got around to finding the rogue security update in Jan 2016.

Others have found it a problem as well once I had identified the KB. I don't recall the frequency of these update problems in the past. It's a pain in the neck MS!

The update KB3121461 is supposed to be applicable to Windows 7. 2919355 appears to be targeted at Windows 8.1.

After I read your original post about KB3121461, I installed all the 01.12 updates excluding that one and SFC scan works fine, so you were right about it being that update.

As for Windows 8, I'd rather get double teamed by Rebel Wilson and Melissa McArtney then install that POS. It reminds me of Millenium and Vista, an in between operating system that does new tricks but is just meant to be a transitional OS. Millenium was far worse than Vista though, it had so many memory leaks, especially with ICQ (which a lot of people still used back then).

KB3121461 will ONLY be offered if Compatibility Appraiser update is installed (Win7 KB2952664, Win8.1 KB2976978) it updates the Inventory Agent which represents this schedule task: \Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\ProgramDataUpdater

Update KB3121461 checks for aepic.dll version for 10.0.0.0 or higher, and that version is installed by KB2952664 (7) or KB2976978 (8.1):

How to check installed packages from an elevated command prompt (places a text file on desktop):

Dism /online /Get-Packages>"%userprofile%\Desktop\featurelist.txt

Remove package(s) from online system:

Dism /online /Remove-Package /PackageName:<package name>

Example:

Dism /online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Package_for_KB2479943~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0

Microsoft could exert draconian control over hardware/software options like Apple does. It also helps to issue fewer updates - by ignoring/delaying issues like Apple does.

That may be so but it was offered as an important update and it corrupts my and others system files.

It would be interesting to know why it affects some but apparently not all users.

I install all important updates except those that stuff up my system and have adopted a policy of not installing recommended and optional updates. Not installing recommended updates may be a bad policy ??? Any opinions?


If there is some critical interaction between an important update and a recommended or optional then this should be handled by MS. The prerequisite recommended/optional should be raised to important and included in the update list as important when not already installed.

If others have an sfc problem with this round of updates then uninstall the update and sfc /scannow will fix the corruption. I chose to reimage and exclude it from the important updates.

It will show as "optional" if you have Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates unchecked, or as "important" if checked... either way MS rates it as "recommended"

I have KB2952664 installed and sfc is fine. But I fail to see where the discussion is heading. KB2952664 has nothing to do with the fact that KB3121461 causes non repairable system file corruption for some users. I don't know how many users it affects. I would at least rate it "User Beware".
I'm alerting other users that it could be a problem for them.

Exactly. KB3121461 won't even be offered unless you have KB2952664 installed in the first place. If you're not upgrading to 10, why have 2952664 installed at all?

Because I don't want to research every update stated as important to a Windows 7 user and I shouldn't need to. Unless you have a lot of time on your hands who wants to do this. Certainly not your average user.
Dragging it out in case I haven't made my point :sarc:. MS Windows update supplied an update to a Windows 7 OS and declared it as important. It doesn't matter if it is associated with the potential to upgrade to Windows 10 in the future it should NOT corrupt system files.
(Upgrading to Windows 10 is probably inevitable anyway in 4 years).

MS define:
"Updates are classified as Important, Recommended, Optional, and Featured. Here's what they mean:

• Important updates offer significant benefits, such as improved security, privacy, and reliability. They should be installed as they become available, and can be installed automatically with Windows Update.
• Recommended updates address non-critical problems or help enhance your computing experience. While these updates do not address fundamental issues with your computer or Windows software, they can offer meaningful improvements. These can be installed automatically.

I'd like to say your point of view is interesting but I can't because I don't understand what your point is.

Repeat: I decided to just install important updates some time ago because they are stated as IMPORTANT by MS mainly because of potential security issues. An important update should not be dependent on either a recommended or optional update. I have many recommended but not all. What's "interesting" about that point of view? It seems logical to me and I'm sure there are others would have the same "interesting" point of view.

BTW I don't have KB3013531, 3021917, 3068708 installed. Why because they must not have been important.
