Hi. I've been trying to instal the Prolific 2303 driver into my USB_Serial port (Com4) without success.

I am using a Samsung RV510 laptop running W7.

I bought a USB-Serial cable and plugged it in to a spare USB port. W7 went off and downloaded and installed a driver from MS. This installed correctly and in the device manager under Ports/Com & LPT it shows as 'USB-Serial CH340 (Com4)'

But the port doesnt work

Searching the net it looks as if the driver should be the Prolific 2303 driver. So I uninstalled and deleted the MS driver, rebooted and installed the Prolific 2303 driver. But in device manager it still shows as 'USB-Serial CH340 (Com4)' - the deleted driver.

What am I doing wrong. In all the examples I can find on the net the driver shows in device manager as 'Prolific 2303 (com4)??

Thanks

Uninstall the device and drivers again. Disconnect the device from the PC. Reboot the PC and start the driver install, but DO NOT connect the unit until the driver install is completed.

Connecting the unit first can result in either an incorrect driver or an install failure.

If you haven't done this, give it a try.

There are also devices out there with older Prolific chips in them and they are also known to have problems. The chip has to be up to a certain rev level, from what I found when purchasing one and getting it working. I bought the working one (I have three - one that works and two that do not work) from Amazon.

Thanks Fireberd. Already tried that several times without result.

But I've just used the Prolific chipset checker and it returns for Com4 the port I am using - 'No 2303 chipset'.

Am I doing something wrong or have I been sold a dude cable? It came from Hong Kong

Others on Amazon have used it Ok.
