Solved Drive shows in Computer with red X

Drive is a Seagate SATA2 160 GB. It had been wiped (one pass - zeros written) in one W7 computer and any partitions removed.

Then I mounted the drive in another computer, created a new volume on it, then quick-formatted it as a logical partition.

At first, the drive wasn't seen by Windows, with view set as 'Tiles' (which seems to be a W7 default), but when I set the view to Small Icons or List, it appeared. It also opened from there, and is of course, empty.

But the drive icon has a red cross against it, and the name is weird. Like, I'd given it the name 'EIDY' and set its letter as 'X'.

But it shows up (exactly) like this: d(\\CG10)(X)
(There's a colon after the X but if I post it that way, it shows as a smiley face)

Note that the mounting computer is a standalone unit and not connected in by cable or wireless to my other machines, so I'm at a loss to explain the backslashes. Also, 'CG10' was the name of a computer that used to be part of my network.

I'm baffled. Anyone have a clue about the red cross or the apparent network name?

Try changing your logical partition to Basic NTSF.

Thanks, LB. I'm not alongside the computer ATM, but I don't think it's a dynamic disk, if that's part of the issue.

I'll take a look tomorrow, about 15 hours hence.

If you use the advanced editor in your reply you can disable smilies to avoid that.

I don't think it's a dynamic disk, if that's part of the issue.

When you can, if you can please complete this tutorial by Golden so we can have a look.

OK, I've rechecked the disk and it's definitely BASIC.

Oddly, in Computer Management\Disk Management it shows as:
EIDY (X
149.05 GB NTFS
Healthy (Active, Logical drive)

But in Computer it has the red cross and the weird name - d(\\Cg10)(X

EDIT: The reason I'm concerned about this 'name\crossed icon' glitch, is that I'm about to experiment with Acronis True Image as an OS recovery system, and the EIDY disk is where I'll store the image.

EDIT: Sorry LB, just saw your post about a screen shot. No prob, I'll do it with Faststone and send it up.

Please complete the tutorial exactly has it states in the tutorial.

Is your computer part of a network?
Are you using or trying to use Raid?

LB, what more do you need to know? What's missing from the screen grabs I sent?

And, as I said in my first post, the mounting computer is NOT connected to a network. Not by wire, not by wireless, not by gossamer threads.

RAID? No. You can see from the screen shots that there are only 3 disks in the system.
1) C drive
2) EIDY (the problem disk)
3) A 4GB USB memory stick.

Your EIDY drive is listed under Network Location is the reason I asked.

He said Logical.

Try changing your logical partition to Basic NTSF.

You said Logical too but posted a tutorial for Dynamic.

You are absolutely correct derekimo I did make a dumb mistake in my post #2. Sorry teckneeculler.

You can try this:
Right click on the \\Cg10 drive under Network Location
If you have a Disconnect option, click it
See if that makes the drive listing disappear

LB, you're right - the drive IS listed under 'Network Location'. Which is part of the mystery...

Heads up: After a couple of reboots, the problem has resolved itself. The drive now has a normal icon and drive letter. Windows never ceases to surprise

Glad to see you have this solved.
I think somehow you had a "bogus or ghost" mapped Network drive entry, but seems it gone now.

Thanks David. Yeah, it's stuff like this that gives techs grey hairs. Or no hairs, like me.

Know what I reckon? We're in the Fred Flintstone era of computing. I liken the situation to the way it was with cars, back in the early 1900's. If you were brave enough to own one, you had to be a fairly adequate mechanic.

So it is today with computers. I mean, they're only tools, after all. Means to an end. Why should we need to know how they work or how to fix them?

One day - maybe - we'll have really reliable computers that rarely, if ever, have problems that they can't solve themselves. And we'll talk to them, conversationally.

I doubt they'll go off the deep end, like HAL or Skynet, but those situations make good entertainment

Oh, and on that score, here's a prediction for the near future: Books will soon be written by computers. Music and art, too, maybe. It's only a matter of sufficient memory and adequate programming.

Actually, now that I think about it, this scenario is likely to be more damaging to the human psyche than killer robots.

I'm happy you got things fixed.
I'm not sure how you got a drive in 'Network Location' but leave yourself a note to beware of such things when they are unwanted.
