How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

New updates were no longer popping up in my system tray. Removing these Win10 updates means I am getting update notifications again.

@Brds7to7

Hope you still read the posts here.Due to problems with another program I had to return to an earlier image. This image was made before I did all the work described in previous posts (uninstalling the updates from the list I made based on posts in this thread.

Instead of taking the same steps I decided to install the GWX control.
I then installed the updates one by one.

KB2506928 ((post 103) – GWX Control - no message
KB 2660075 (post 103)- GWC Control - no message
KB2923545 )- – GWX Control - no message
No messages from GWX control
On the 26th I installed first:
KB2952664
I restarted PC - no message from GWX control
And then :
KB2970228
KB3035583
No messages when starting the pc on the 27th
Today however on startup GWX control signals (see attachment)
I saved diagnostics info - see end of this post
3 questions:
1. I had expected to get info on the Windows Update KB number to uninstall. I do not see them.
2. Do I use "Click to delete Windows 10 programs" to solve?
If so I will not know which Updates to hide if they come back
3. I had expected GWX control to prompt during installation or at least immediately after installation. You may remember that I planned to keep GWX control out of startup. I didn't now. If I had done so I would not have known I installed a dangerous Update

The personal excluded file lists include several categories which people have decided to block for various reasons:

1. Win10 Upgrade related KBs
2. Win 10 like features being added to Win 7 / 8
3. Hardware related items specific to certain hardware that don't apply to all users
4. Windows Defender / malicious software too, related
5. Recommended (optional) Upgrades that aren't security related.

You may or may not want top be concerned with all of them and I probably missed a few. AFAIK, GWX addresses itself only with category 1.

MS Updates Rules of Thumb:

  • install the Security Updates
  • Refrain from installing Optional or Recommended patches unless you have a good reason to do so.
  • Avoid the optional hardware drives delivered thru MS Updates like the plague
    • best to install drivers from the manufacturer... heard of too many problems from drivers delivered via WU
    • even better not to install newer hardware drivers unless you have a compelling need to do so.

Re: telemetry updates... it's a personal choice. Some people don't object to them.
Others find MS increased intrusion to be in very bad taste -- to say the least -- and won't install them.

If you object to the telemetry updates, it might be a good idea to disable a number of the telemetry tasks set up in Task Scheduler :

  • Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Application Experience > disable AitAgent & ProgramDataUpdater
  • Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Autochk > disable Proxy
  • Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Customer Experience Improvement Program > disable Consolidator, KernelCEIP Task & UsbCEIP

And make sure you've opted-out of the Customer Experience Improvement Program:
Control Panel > Action Center > Change Action Center setting > Customer Experience Improvement Program settings > check No, I don't want to participate in the program & click Save changes

Also, opt-out of CEIP in MS Office; for instance in Word or Excel:
File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > uncheck Sign up for the Customer Experience Improvement Program

Personally, I haven't installed any of the telemetry updates...

I did find a started task that will at least get rid of the "Get Win 10" ... for now.
Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Setup ->GWX - disable "launchtrayprocess" and log off/on and it goes away.

As of today.

Win10 is now sneaking in thru internet explorer updates .... take a look at KB 3146449

"This update adds functionality to Internet Explorer 11 on some computers that lets users learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10. Before you install this update, see the Prerequisites section. For more information about Windows 10, see Windows 10."

And also read that they are now pushing ads to the lock screen, ain't that just dandy ... yet another reason not to "go there".

I like windows 10. I have some issue with W10. No dvd player but that is becoming less needed. I have dvd player as well. The privacy issue doesn't bother as it did before after reading about Microsoft fighting the government. The main issue that is holding back is the automated upgrade. Since, I dual boot with Linux. So, I use Grub. When Grub is installed. Windows 10 will not install or upgrade to a new release, it will actually rollback. I think the reason W10 can't get access to MBR. So every new release, I would have to remove grub, install release, then restore grub back.

None of those seem to be Windows 10 related. They're optional though so you have to decide if they're relevant to your system.

Agreed but the Optional section should be mostly ignored :)
Unless it is a new update client would be the exception or net framework 4.6.1

Wow, is this really true? If so it could be the answer to many people's prayer! Install GRUB - who knew?

I'll have to try this -

  1. Install Win7,
  2. Make a 10GB unallocated partition
  3. Install Linux with GRUB (Linux Mint for example)
  4. No more Win10 update worries!

I'll try it this weekend.

Regards,
GEWB

UPDATE

OK, first idea needed modification - deleting Linux not a good idea.

Soooo, has anyone used GRUB2WIN? It sounds like it should work. Perhaps I'll try that first.

It is a little bit more complicated to get windows 10 to work and Linux to to dual boot. I did read somewhere Microsoft is only going to have 3 or 4 release per year for windows 10, so it may not be that bad after all. One note, I think 10gb maybe to small for Linux. I use the mbr partition schemes.

That method you used should of worked with windows 7 sp1. I don't think it is exactly the same steps I used but close to it.
