Windows 7 x64 slower than x86

So I had Windows 7 32bit running in a partition on my desktop, and found I never booted into Vista. Combined with the fact that my desktop is gaming only, and all my work is done on my Macbook Pro. I wiped my old Vista x64 install and put Windows 7 x64 on it.

Windows 7 x64 seems to be running quite a bit slower than x86 was running.

Anyone else ever come across this?

How much memory do you have? It will run better with at least 8gb of memory.

I have 4, and was going to put 4 more in this weekend. I was just baffled that x64 was very noticeably slower the x86.

Hmm, I have 7 64 with 4 gb and Vista 32 bit, I had 7 32 bit too. I don't really notice any slowness but if you just installed it like yesterday, it may be kind of unresponsive at first because of Superfetch and all that but should start speeding up over time.

Win 732 bit is significantly faster than Vista 32bit for me, even after extensive tweaking of Vista.

I am lucky enough to be in a position to pass comment, like a noob I stuck Win 7 32 on initially and used it for almost a week before putting 64 bit on it instead. Win 7 64 is considerably faster than 32, and absolutely blows Vista out of the water.

I ordered a new cpu and 4 gigs of ram and was thinking i was going to upgrade[?] from 32bit win7 to 64bit win7, so will it keep all my files and things where i have them, or do i need to reincorporate them after the install?

Nop, my 64 bit install is running signifacantly quicker than any one of my previous 32 bit installs.

While I haven't actually "tried" the 32bit version of 7, I can't see how it could be significantly faster than it is right now.

I think it may have been the Search Indexer doing it's thing in the background that slowed you down a bit. I found the indexer doing very heavy workload for the first day or two when I first installed 7 but after the indexing was done, everything worked great.

Personally I stop all that indexing malarkey. It serves no purpose for me as I am highly organised and know where everything is. I also run a tight ship, so to speak, and do not accumulate gigabytes of junk to search through.

I only notice when superfetch is getting its act together, speed is definitely lower.

Anyone else ever come across this?

if your processor is older like one of the original dual cores, this maybe the problem, they were made to be read as a 32bit, but function (mostly) like a 64.... its wierd.... but this may be the... a problem.
also did you get all the drivers for 64x? they are a pain to find...

I run 7 x64 on a old laptop turion system and I get a 1.9 experience score. (mainly due to HD and RAM 1gig) and x64 runs alot faster then XP pro 32bit.

I also have no real issues

TheTez, so would my intel Dual-Core T2390 running on my toshiba laptop (3gb sdram) be good for x64 or should i stick with x86...ive noticed from the compatibility list that x64 has better support for games.... but im worried if installing x64 would limit any of the other tasks that i do normally (performance/compatability-wise)

Is "x86" the same thing as 32-bit?
