New KB3184143 Update to Remove Windows 10 Upgrade Offer

Well, look what showed up today in Windows Update: KB2952664. I am certain to have hidden it numerous times. Now the description is new:

This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. These diagnostics help determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system.

Source: Microsoft

The description is the same as its always been. And that update has been reissued numerous times now. I think it's on version 25 now, so each time it gets reissued it will show up again, even if you hide it.

This is why I don't bother to hide it anymore. I just leave it in the optional section along with many others.
KB2952664 is like a turd that won't flush, just keeps on popping up.

Hi,
KB3177467 never showed up for me
Wonder if that was dependent on if KB3179573 was installed or not
Which I didn't install that one.

Hi. I had KB3179573 installed on 29th September 2016. KB3177467 doesn't show up in optional updates. Installed it anyway. Prerequisite is Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. (KB976932)

View update history.jpg

Checked the files that are supposed to be replaced but none of them have actually been replaced. Example from file list here:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3177467

Servicing Stack Updates.jpg

Well I can see that the file hasn't changed since 2010 although the updated versions are present in WINSXS.

Same goes for the other files in the list.

Seems to be the same issue as here where I checked more than one machine.

April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 (KB3020369) & files

And a Partridge in a Pear Tree!
It's more like a snake that comes up and bites you on the <your choice of body part here>. I took the free update some time ago and have had nothing but trouble with privacy, insistence on linking my computer(s) with a Microsoft account, etc. It began with bricking my main computer because it changed the locking screen password to the Microsoft account password, which I had stored on that computer... (I got that resolved by resetting the Microsoft account password on another computer). There have been many other hassles due to intrusion on privacy or whatever. It continues today with a "feature update" that insists that Windows Defender run in real time etc. even though I have Norton Security installed and running. I found that even after shutting off Defender that the CPU is still running about 20% usage (and making my fan whir away noisily). Task manager says it's Acronis, but Acronis doesn't say it's doing anything.

If I could go back to Windows 7 I would do so in a heartbeat. As it is, I'm considering moving to Linux. I have another 8-core machine running Linux on the KVM and, other than application compatibility issues, the main thing I would miss are Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver. Adobe seems to be very much committed to making you rent their software, so I will likely find alternatives on Windows, so that's not an anchor.

I'm already planning my re-installation of Windows 7 Ultimate. I will need a day or more to re-install everything, get the drivers working, etc.

My laptop came with Windows 7 Home, updated through MS to Windows 7 Pro. Windows 10 took over like a fungus and hasn't caused as many problems as with my main machine, but since the keyboard time is 95% or more on the big machine, it has caused more than it's share of aggravation.

The new "feature update" for Windows 10 is a hook that lets you start applications from other machines on your Windows account, default enabled. This is a YUGE security problem, of course. I disabled it immediately.

Whoooa. If I didn't know to disable auto-update and manually install KB3020369, then KB3125574, then KB3172605, I would have bricked my main machine. Thanks; I'll be back!

The first thing to do is to make an image of my C: drive with Acronis. That way, if things don't work out, I can say "never mind" and come back later, prepared for what I found the first time. Thanks for saving me from a number of those, and quite possibly all of them.

Hi,
No worries those three updates will get everything going perfectly
There will still be about 60-70 left to install
I'd normally just deal with the real Important updates first and cull through the others skipping the win-10 related ones and telemetry stuff too.

Start out with these settings
update settings.JPG

Here's my current list not installed so far for various reasons
10-18-2016 skipped optional.PNG

I was looking at my laptop, an Acer that came with Windows 7 Home. I upgraded it to Windows 7 Pro to get it on a WiFi network in a workplace. I don't have the Windows 7 authorization for that computer. I was figuring on using my installation DVD and the laptop's original authorization code, but that doesn't seem possible. Do you have any suggestions there?

Hi,
You have a activation key for 7 home premium ?
That will not work for your pro version for sure :)

Not sure what can be done about that
There is a key finder utility can't remember what it's called
I'll message someone possibly they will remember what it is.

No, I never had the laptop activation key. It was upgraded to Windows 7 Professional before the Windows 10 "Stuxnet" upgrade.

So, should I install this or not? I also have KB3182203 and KB3181988 listed. What are those and should I install these?

Hi,
I installed KB3181988 on 9-20-16 so it seems fine.

The other one I have not installed personally.

Create a system image and install them if you wish too :)
