Random BSOD, Nvidia Driver Issue? 0x1000007e caused by nvlddmkm.sys

I've had my HP Pavilion DV7 laptop for about four years and have never had an issue with blue screens until now. The first one occurred about a month ago, but after a restart everything seemed to be ok so I didn't worry about it. It happened again two days ago, and then again today.

I'm not sure what triggered them, they just happen randomly, even if the Nvidia chip isn't in use. The one that happened two days ago was while I was using Firefox, and today when I woke it up from sleep. I'm able to play games that use the chip, if that matters.

The chip is a Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 2GB. I believe the attached zip archive and BlueScreenView report have all the required information, but I will be happy to provide anything else that is needed to help diagnose the issue.

Now that the BSOD is so specific as to what caused the crash I would strongly recommend that you reboot into safe mode and use DDU tool:

Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 17.0.2.0

DDU will in safe mode, completely uninstall the graphics card drivers.

Once that is complete, I would recommend that you visit GeForce to download the most recent drivers for your card:

GeForce Drivers

After that I would recommend that you also update the Intel graphics that are integrated, to do this I would use the Intel driver updater tool:

Intel(R) Driver Update Utility

I ran DDU in Safe Mode and reinstalled the Nvidia Driver and everything appears to have gone well.

I installed the Intel Driver Update Utility and it's showing two different graphics drivers. I'm not sure which one to install, or if I should install both. Currently I only have the Intel HD Graphics Driver installed.

The Intel HD Graphics driver is probably the one I need, but I don't get why it's showing two different ones.

Please uninstall Daemon tools, it uses drivers known for causing BSODs in Windows.

Please check HP for driver updates for your LAN network drivers, I would recommend to use DDU again to uninstall Nvidia drivers from Geforce and get the display drivers from HP.
Laptop manufacturers usually alter their drivers so it is best to install the drivers they provide.

Thanks for the reply, however I have already used DDU, reinstalled the Nvidia driver, and everything seems to be fine so far. The little issue I'm currently having is that Intel Driver Update is showing two different drivers, and I'm not sure which one to install.

I've used Daemon tools for years and haven't had an issue with it, but I will keep that in mind.

The drivers listed on the HP site for my laptop are all from 2012, so I don't think using those would be a good idea, especially the Nvidia one.

Intel Driver Update is also showing an update for my Wireless drivers, so I suppose that would be a good idea to install.


I'm just not sure which of the two Intel Graphics drivers to install.

In the case of laptops the age doesn't matter as much as with desktops.

The network driver I'm talking about isn't from Intel, but the Realtek LAN driver.

I highly recommend to ONLY get your drivers from HP.

I'm sure for most people with a new PC, using the HP provided drivers would be best, but I don't really want to use graphics drivers from 2012. I've been using the Nvidia provided drivers ever since I've had my laptop and haven't had a problem with it until recently, but using DDU and reinstalling seems to have cleared it up. I will go and install the Realtek LAN driver though.

The only thing I'm not sure about is which of the graphics drivers suggested by the Intel Update Utility to use. One says Intel Graphics Driver, and the other says Intel HD Graphics Driver.
