Downloading Updates Seems to Do Nothing ???

I read the stickie and did a bit of searching, but I am not very computer literate and thought better to ask before jumping in over my head.

This particular unit is a Dell Optiplex 780m with Win7 Pro

I have updates set to "show me updates but let me choose"

I selected only the important security updates and got as far as the little box that says Downloading updates...

The progress bar has a green streak that continuously runs it's length, as if something is going on.

It has been at least two hours and it still says "Downloading 30 updates (0 KB total, 0% complete)

This is not the first time I have run into this and also on different computers.

It also says:
Most Recent Check for Updates: 10/20/2016 etc.
Updates were installed: 3/13/2016

According to that, I have been wasting my efforts.

In plain dumbie English, how do I fix or do I just ignore updates and keep on computing (which seems to be the best alternative at this point) ?

Will the System Update Readiness Tool mentioned in the stickie fix this problem ?

You have selected the wrong options.

Use option 2: Download updates and let me choose when to install them.
In this way, you do not have to wait.


As you mentioned your are

Suggest you to use option 1.



But i prefer:

Option 1: Install updates automatically (Recommended).

The updates are all critical updates, that's all.
So far, my laptop have no problem, as it is stable.

Bear in mind that with the WU setting at "Download updates and let me choose when to install them", if "Check for updates" has been clicked, the downloaded updates will automatically be installed when the cptr is shutdown.

Does this hold true if I uncheck all the listed updates ?

If so, can I then at my convenience find the list again to install the ones I want ?

If a Win 7 cptr had been set to "Automatic" update since 29 July 2015, it would already hv been auto-upgraded to Win 10 by M$ a long time ago.

For what it's worth, I installed Never10 on all of our computers a long time ago and it was the first thing I did to our recent addition.

Never10 must work, because as soon as it was installed, the constant Win 10 pop-ups ceased to harass us.

I accomplished this process on one computer; three to go.

The one I just did said it already had the KB3020369 installed; I then installed the KB3172605

I would not set it like that.

It should be set to check for updates but let you decide when to download and install them.

You should never install an update without reading what it is and what is does, you do not need every update MS throws at you.

If, after deciding that you do not want or need an update, right click on it and hide it.

I agree; however, I have a devil of a time understanding what is good and what is bad.

Does anyone compile a list of the good updates each month for dummies such as I so that all I would need do is follow the list ?
