downloading updates hangs

I still want to keep two copies of W7 and keep them up to date. Checking for updates is slow, but when I select the offered ones, the process hangs at "downloading updates", the green bar moves nicely but it stays at 0 kb. Any thoughts?

Often, when you give up searching, the updates are offered the next day ("You have 264 updates").

Let the computer to download updates while you are using the computer

Go to Windows Update --> Change setting.

On the important updates, drop down to select your choice.

For Important updates it is best to use the "Recommended"

Unless you want run the updates yourself, then choose "Download update and let me..."
