Mystery disk in DISKPART

I went to clean all a SSD tonight and I find in list disk there is a disk with no media see pic - in that I have my large data disk showing now whereas when I had just the OS drive in I still got this disk. .

I have unplugged all drives bar the C: drive and it still lists this disk that does not exist.

Any ideas please

Hi John,

Do you by any chance have some device connected such as a printer that has card reader(s) ?
If you do, disconnect the device(s) and see if that helps.

No David and even trying the procedure on the 10 machine has got five of those no media disks showing and the only thing I can think of is that extra disks is the machine picking up the empty SATA ports for some reason??

I did use Partition Wizard wipe to clean the partition to 0"s as it would not do the disk as a whole so I am left wondering if the drives I am trying to clean are any good..

John here is a shot of my Gateway, it has an 11 in 1 card reader, does your pc have a card reader ?

The words No Media under Status is the clue

Brian no mate the Ivy Bridge -P8Z77-V has six SATA ports yet it showed only those three drive options ?? and yes that no media one just could be the card reader which means it isn't necessarily showing those other ports or any drive plugged into them, plus the card reader is plugged into the board if my memory serves me right - not a SATA port.

Sata ports do not show up in Diskpart

If you have a card reader plugged in then it`s the card reader, don`t worry about. March on my friend

Please plugout anything and everything from the USB ports of your PC - except of course your USB Keyboard and mouse - and check what shows.

If it`s an internal connection, and you know you have a card reader there`s no reason to touch it.

If you had a sandisc and plugged it in, then that media would show up in Diskpart.

I have a Epson CX 5000 with 2 card reader ports on it and a usb port, if you wanted to print a picture right off the card or stick.

They only show up in Diskpart if that printer is on.

The next thing I would advise you is to perform a drive cleanup to remove all non-present devices and drive letters associating with those non-present devices. ( It doesn't hurt to do this periodically to clean up)

Download v 0.8.1 of the drivecleanup.zip from Drive Tools for Windows. ( You may download the latest version also but I haven't tried. I stick with v 0.8.1)

Unzip it to a folder, say drivecleanup.

You will have two folders Win32 and x64 each containing DriveCleanup.exe for 32 bit and 64 bit respectively.

Remove all USB storage devices from your system (except your Keyboard and mouse) and reboot. I would also advise that you disconnect from the internet when you do this cleanup)

Right click on the DriveCleanup.exe and run as administrator. (Use the *.exe file appropriate for your bit version of Windows.).

After the clean up act, reboot.

( When you plug in your USB devices after this cleanup, these will be installed afresh. What you have done is to remove all non-present devices and drive letters/registry entries associated with them and start with a clean slate.)

Yep J I clean it all the time (C: drive) both with CCleaner and the Windows disk cleanup feature this is a pic of my disk management.
I will await further comment before I do any other cleaning

I am not talking about CCleaner . CCleaner does not remove non-present devices, their drive letters and associated registry entries that remain and confuse Windows even after removal of the device/s.

The only difference is I do not move DriveCleanup.exe to C:\Windows\System32. I keep them in their respective folders, right click on the appropriate DriveCleanup.exe ( 32bit or 64bit as per the OS) and run as administrator.

In your case I would believe these drive letters belong to the Card Reader which you might have connected previously and Windows did not release it when you plugged it out. The now non-present Card Reader continues to show up by the "confused" Windows.

Ok jumanji I think you are right on this one I will try the drivers link as I did have some time ago problems with the USB ports ie losing them and some other odd behaviours that was cured by removing the Samsung Magician software after one of us spotted my problem back then knew just what it was, and there has been no problems since.

I might be a while as I am on one of the 10 machines right now trying to fix a wifi issue.
