I'm trying to find my Event Viewer, on a Windows 7 OS. Seems easy enough, and it seems to start out OK, but it doesn't take me to Event Viewer and I just end up looking at an empty Administrative Tools folder.

Go to Start Menu - that goes OK
Point to Programs - I actually have to Right Click. That gives me a drop down - but that lets me proceed.
Point to Administrative Tools...

I actually have to do several steps before I get to that. I have to Right Click "Open" then it puts me at a folder called "Administrative Tools".
The instructions say "Point to" Administrative Tools and then click Event Viewer. This is where things go off track.

I have to Click Administrative Tools, then it gives me an empty folder. No Event Viewer in sight.

Tried searching my system for the file. Can't find it.

Maybe I'm not understanding. This is what I do.

1. Start Orb
2. Type Event. Normally when I type Ev, Event View is at the top.
3. Tick on Event Viewer and it opens.
4. You can right tick on Event Viewer at the top and it should give you many choices.

I keep Event Viewer in the program section using the Start Orb.

Don't know why your Administrative Tools are showing blank, right clock on the Orb, choose Properties, then go Start Menu (middle tab) then "Customise" and at the bottom there is an entry to show or hide Admin tools.

Or, just right clock on My Computer and choose "manage" and you can get to the Event Viewer from there.

I finally have an Intel machine that has more than 8GB of Ram.
My ASUS M2N-SE AMD Windows 7 machine is back to Windows 7. Replaced the AMD 4400+ CPU and maxed out the RAM (4GB).
My Core Duo machine is only 2GB of Ram and it is locked to Windows XP in order to run Pro Tools 6.4, which I have been using since 2004.
I have one other Dell OptiPlex 980 tower, Identical to this one,

Thanks. Tried that first of all these suggestions. It was, indeed, clicked to not show, so I clicked the button to have things show and set that. Still, nothing showing in the Administrative Tools folder. I'm going to go try the other things while I figure that out.

Thank you. This one brought up my Event Viewer & all its choices.
Now I just have to figure out where it's been storing my logs.

I'll see what I can learn from Brink's suggestions.

I've recently gotten divorced and my ex was an IT guy. He did a lot of jiggering with my computer, not always, I am now realizing, to my benefit.

He might have deleted the logs if they got full, although you are prompted to backup the logs. Look for for files ending in evtx, those are saved logs. They are not all saved in the same file, each section has it's own evtx files when they are backed up, you want to look for system.evtx or applications.evtx, and those might have different names depending on how ne named the backups.

Probably better advice than I realize. I'm going to back-pocket this. Might be smart to do that.

Can you boot the system, you can just do an in-place install. I've does this several times, it clears up all kinds of problems. Make sure you have that sticker on the back or side of the PC or Laptop that has the license key. MS will give you a new key for a reinstall. They also have a webpage that will generate a new key for you, information is on the activation panel in Windows 7.
