Download problem

Hello all,
I am frustrated and out of ideas. The problem quite simply is that when i download pictures now the system will hang up for up to like 4-5 secs. What i mean by this is that i cannot click anything else in the browser. Normally you should be able to download something then click other things even start multiple downloads.

SO what i have investigated.
- IT is not the browser, It is doing this in Brave, Mozilla and IE.
-IT is not my hard drive i have used multiple HD's in all the possible USB slots and the internal HD.
-I have updated all the drivers
- I have check the window files with multiple programs and cannot find anything corrupted.
- I have scanned for malware viruses and registry with multiple programs
-i have run SFC/ scan now from the cmd line.
-The ram is fine and so is the rest of the hardware.
- And a few other things that escape me at the moment.

The install of windows 7 is problematic . which i have not been able to fully figure out with the event viewer etc. IT seems to be related to the NIvidia drivers and the graphics card. I think.
However the Download issue does not seem to be related. It has come and gone over this past year. It will mysteriously just start working again until the next time.

Does anyone know what windows process/ program controls the download feature.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Just curious: What are you downloading, and from where? Makes a lot of difference.
Moving or copying files is just a part of Windows,and always has been. Not a separate program.

What antivirus program do you use? I have had the same issue numerous times over the decades and the cause generally came down to two things: A/V program the is always checking files, and IRQ conflicts.

I am Downloading Jpg and png files from image boards i regularly have used for many years.

And i understand that it is apart of windows. But should one not be able to pinpoint a process or service and or the associated files that relate to that particular process?

currently i am only using microsoft security essentials as an active A/V program, I regularly use malwarebytes and ccleaner and just added avast tune up last night which could not be the issue, i also have Ultra virius killer and a recent last month addition of tweaking.com windows repair none of which i allow to run in the background but use as needed .

i am kinda of heavy handed on killing background processes, i dont use a different anti virus program for that reason they all seem to add alot of bloat to the system running.

Most of the time i am not running more than 80 processes in total for the whole machine at rest.

I just checked for IRQ conflicts and found none.

I considered an update to security essential as the problem as there were a few new restore points for that . i did a system restore to a date i knew the downloads worked but got nothing....

not sure how anything got updated as i have the updater set to not update and i regularly stop the windows update service at boot up...

Have you ever got the nvlddmkm.sys bsod?

i am unsure i had some BSOD's in the past not sure if it was before or after i had a clean install on an upgraded HD. In any case i have not had a BSOD in like a year and a half at least..

The only thing i have been having is Nividia drivers crashing and recovering and sudden power interruptions when the machine just blanks out. Like if it were over heating but i know that is not the cause. The events i have been able to decipher have indicated it maybe the Nividia drivers.

I updated those yesterday so i am hopeful i wont be seeing that issue again..

The only other weird thing is that the machine will not boot up the first time, it kind of gets stuck and i do a 4 sec power button reset then it loads. it has been doing this for like a year now i would say... so that would not be related to the download issue.

There is a new and improved version of Windows 7, available for download on the internet, for anyone willing to get it and use it.
I downloaded it myself, and installed it to a spare HD, and it works GREAT!
I think that if I were having the issues with Win-7 that you are having, I would, at the very least, save your data and reinstall Windows.
It's actually a very simple process, even in Colorado.

Or as I actually did when I was having weird problems with my own Win-7....I installed Windows 8.1/Pro/64. Installed the Classic Shell, installed all my favorite programs, and then added back all my data files. 8.1 runs like a champ, with The Classic Shell installed, and no more problems.

There is always a FIX for whatever problems you may be having with your OS. It's NOT always what you WANT to do, or if you're capable of doing. When I have problems of any kind, I always try to take the path of least resistance. It's a little trick that I learned in my 40+ years of doing computer repair. When I embark on any computer repair today, on my own PC's, I always tell myself, "K.I.S.S.!" (keep it simple, stupid!)

I wish I could help you with your problem, but Colorado is a little too far from FL, for a service call.
Although, I'd love to see those mountains again. Mt Evans is my favorite.

@TechnoMage2016 Well i am saving reinstalling as a last option. I appreciate the idea of keeping it simple however i have been in the game since my dad an I built our first computer from a kit from radio shack in the 70's. And i am an Explorer at heart i do still like learning and trying to solve problems.

I find it hard to keep up with all the changes and what not ill admit. But all in all i hate not knowing why it just leads me to frustration.

Tried windows 8.1 dont like it and i have decided windows 7 is my last Microsoft os . I am gonna move to Linux eventually. *shrugs*

Thanks for the advise but i want to try to figure this out so i can prevent it from happening again. As i am fond of saying it's ultimately all just 1's and 0's put enough of them in the right order and the machine will do what you want.

Check your hard drive. Here's one tool: Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring


And or isolate your hard drive and just the computing environment of that laptop buy running a Linux live CD of Ubuntu, Puppy Linux or something. Heck, even Hiren's Boot CD will suffice. Just run one of those via USB (careful not to use the install option in Linux) and browse and download images as before. Still have issues? Then it's RAM. For that, use Memtest86. Not the + version as I don't think that version is updated.

It could be two issues. PSU might be one, RAM or hard drive could be the other. Just isolate the environment first with a live OS and tell me what happens. Very hard to diagnose these things over the Internet. I'd have to be in front of your computer.

ok so i just disabled microsoft security essentials real time protection right now and so far my download issue is gone. could be concidence but... we will have to see as time goes on. I dont understand why the program would be annoying off and on like that. *Shrugs* Ill have to rely on some of the plug ins in brave to cope for now.

So thanks for all who had feedback. I hope this is truely fixed.

Yeah, I've seen my fair share of shenanigans from AV software and firewalls. So you're not the only one. My personal opinion of such software is of a negative one. Thus, I don't use any of it at all and use a more unorthodox approach to help prevent a malware infection.

If you want to read a little about how I do things in what I'd call a condensed written format, then go here and here. I really need to do an instructional video or something. Doubt anyone would really care, but I could probably explain and teach it for those that are willing to learn.

It really does ultimately come down to how you use the Internet and your security hygiene. And that requires some computing knowledge as well. Many don't have those skills and simply trust some vendor to protect their computer and whatnot. I guess it's like picking car insurance or any type of insurance for that matter. So, for me I don't use "insurance" (traditional AV software). I just keep a massive pile of fictitious money on hand in the form of intellectual capital of knowledge gained and use that to safe guard my computer and whatnot.
