Receiving error trying to download Win 7 disk from Microsoft.

Hi,

I received a computer from my company that we will no longer be using. I am responsible for clearing it out and re installing windows. I do not have the disk but I get this message when I go to download it from Microsoft I get this The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options."

What does this mean?

You are trying to use an OEM key to download an Iso file from Microsoft, that won`t work.

And it`s telling you to contact the OEM manufacturer to obtain install media.

What version of windows do you want ? What bit version ? 32 or 64 ? and what language ?

I will post the Microsoft link and all you`ll have to do is click on the link for the download to start.

You may want to look for an iso download from HP, Dell. That should activate automatically on your machine.

You didn't say what kind of key you have. Is it from a sticker on the machine?

If so, you may also be able to d/l a regular MS iso, use the key, and ( if necessary ) call MS free phone no. to activate.

I am getting the key from the MS sticker on the computer. I do not know what version of windows it is 32 or 24.... is there a way of telling?

To see what win 7 version you have, on Explorer, right click on Computer - properties

Download the downloader tool https://www.heidoc.net/php/Windows ISO Downloader.exe
Choose win 7 - OEM

Computer has a windows log in screen I can not get past it to find out what version I have.

I just need to find that out and where I can download the IOS to wipe the computer and start over.

It`s written right on the sticker. Home Premium, Professional etc

We will go with 64 bit.

You have two options:

1) From BIOS launch Factory Recover. It will format the drive and reinstall windows as it came from manufacture
HP PCs - Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7) | HP(R) Customer Support

2) On another computer, download the downloader tool https://www.heidoc.net/php/Windows ISO Downloader.exe
Run it. Choose win 7 pro 64 - OEM
Burn the iso on a DVD or use rufus Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way to make a USB installation flash disk.

Boot from the installation disk, go to Install - Advanced - delete all partitions - create new - proceed.
Clean Install Windows 7

The product key is good for 32 bit or 64 bit, it's your choice which one you install. Either one can be activated with that key. It's only locked to the edition, Home, Pro, etc. Any version ISO will do, with a minor modification. If you remove the ei.cfg file that ISO becomes multi edition. Windows 7 Universal Installation Disc - Create Then just install the same version from the list that is listed on the COA sticker. Also, odds are, even using that key, you will have to do a phone activation. I have any time I have used a OEM-COA key for the first time. That PC was originally activated with a different OEM-SLP key. You can't use the OEM-SLP key with stock install media. It only works with the custom factory recovery/install media. And if you have that media, you don't need to know that key anyway, its auto entered.

Ok you said that you can see the logon screen.Below that can you see the windows version ie.starter,home basic,home premium,professional ,ultimate or enterprise.if you can find it,you may post it here

If the COA sticker says Pro, install Pro. If it has 4 gigs or RAM or more, your going to want to install the 64 bit version.

I don't have an alternative source for an ISO. Wish I did. The official download link has never worked for me even with my MSDN keys. I've been told that is because MSDN keys are blocked. I don't know if that is true though. The only other Windows 7 keys I have are OEM, which I know are blocked. Why Microsoft did that I have no idea? The Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 MCT's will accept OEM keys. I get my ISO's via MSDN which is a subscription service.

The OEM of that device may sell you a set of recovery disks? From what I hear, they aren't cheap. I've never gone that route myself.
