Hello and welcome Emma now please follow this
Now before we can help we do need to know what is in your machine so please do this System Info - See Your System Specs
or either enter the specs of your system in your forum profile the specs will appear when we click on that little box bottom left of the post screen it is for me the preferable option as it is easy. As you may appreciate it is very hard when you don’t know what one is working with for example a diesel or petrol engine.
*(pretyped to save time)

Now as it happens I have a similar issue on the machine I am on right now and I suspect it is the audio socket and it works by having contacts inside it to automatically switch off the internal speakers when phones are plugged in and my guess is that the auto switch is jammed open.

Now this calls for the machine to be disassembled and checked if you are confident to do that. Sometimes it is better to take the machine into a repairer and get it done because replacing that socket is very fiddly and needs the correct replacement part or one that is very close to the original one - sorry.

But before you do that there is an alternative and that is to get a pair of external speakers - they are really quire cheap these days for what output laptops are usually putting out - the only drawback is that it is something else you have to carry around or use the phones when not at home.

Before disassembling I would check it's properties to make sure everything is fine and not disabled or set to the wrong settings as sometimes when plugging in headsets the program doesn't set the correct output back to speakers once the headset is disconnected.

Open Device Manager and make sure it's not disabled. ( NO Yellow explanation points)

Then check your "Sound Properties" and make sure your speakers have a green check mark next to them.

As was mentioned we need more info on your system specs so we know what motherboard your using and it's on-board sound chipset as this dictates which program is in control of the sound options.

I agree with The Borg and lest us see just what those devices show. Now as I mentioned disassembly is not for the faint hearted and even so if you are confident to do that then the actual socket on the board may be wrecked somehow and replacing it can be really quite difficult and so best left to a repair shop. That is because it may mean accessing a genuine part.
If the socket is "open plan" so to speak then one can see the different contacts and actuating springed arms but I am not so sure with the newer machines these days.
See my pics for a rough idea what they are like.

Um, John...

I think you have the wrong picture for picture #2. That is a picture of USB connectors, not audio connectors.

For a few years when sound cards (chips) with Surround function were first released, some would default the headphones port to a mic port (or vice versa). I don't know what setting over-rode this, or if any are still made with the same functionality...

Meant to add this interesting although I have not come across that yet but a good thought all the same:)
