Hi Guys.

No Audio sound Realtek/NVIDIA on Windows XP Sp3.

I know this is Windows 7 forum but if I wanted to install Window 7 on my Windows XP SP3 it will give the same problem.

I need to install a new 2.TB hard drive.

I've asked about this on a Window XP forum but you don't link links to another forum so I' post the text posted.

For many years I've used my Windows XP SP3 and it works great. A few months ago it wouldn't start up it kept showing the boot menu. That's another long story if anyone is interested.

I put back the original 500GB drive just so I can access emails. The only hard drive was set to the old graphics card. The new graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770.
When you insert the CD and install drivers it says it needs internet connection to do so. To me that's total bull, it should install the graphics drivers else what's the point in having a CD. Its a graphics card not a sound card.

Its a Gigabyte motherboard and you insert the CD and install all drivers and updates. It installs Realtek Audio Driver

The install options shows NVIDIA High Definition Audio, physics, GeForce desktop. Its a graphics card why the hell does it force When its restarts there is no audio/sound. Device Manager shows

I remember on the last rebuild there was no sound but I sorted that but that was along time ago so I can't remember what I did exactly.

I downloaded and installed Realtek High Definition Audio XP 2.74 XP. from FileHippo but the audio still doesn't work

Before I put the new Seagate Barracuda 2.0TB hard drive in I want to get the audio sorted.

I check Device Manager and it still shows NVIDIA High Definition Audio file version 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2108) and Realtek High Definition Audio with a list of file names. Some are the same on both audio's.

If I uninstall NVIDIA High Definition Audio and check for any changes if puts it back.

If I search the registry for NVIDIA High Definition Audio and try an delete what it shows its says I can't probably because its in use.

Speccy still shows NVIDIA High Definition Audio as the main controller as well as list Realtek High Definition Audio.

Do you know why NVIDIA graphics card has audio built in?

The BIOS Audio is set as its always been for year. The Audio played properly on the last hard drive.

If Realtek High Definition Audio is the default why does Speccy show NVIDA High Definition Audio even though both are listed in the spec?

You would have to Google NAVIDA Gigabyte GTX 770 graphics card to find the spec. It doesn't show Audio even though the driver install shows NAVIDA Audio which I never select

It doesn't list on GeForce GTX 770 CD driver install it shows HD Audio Driver v1.3.24.2. If you want a picture let me know?

If I wanted to install Window 7 on my Windows XP SP3 it will give the same problem.

Are you sure about that? The only way to know if this is true is to install Windows 7 and try it out.

Since you are going to install a new hard drive, you can safely install Windows 7 and try things out, without overwriting your current XP install.

I suspect that you will be more likely to be able to resolve this with 7 than with XP, because 7 is a more modern OS, still supported by Microsoft. Therefore, you very likely can get the exact video driver that you need for 7.

Well I upgraded the original 500GB to 2.0TB in 2012. I bought the NVIDA GTX 770 graphics card in 2014 when the computer wouldn't start up. As I've said the driver install shows HD Audio Driver so I left that ticked just in case, that's the first time I used the driver CD. There was no sound.

When I've done previous rebuilds I install all drivers from the Gigabyte CD which installs Realtek High Definition Audio. I did get the sound working after a lot of fiddling around, I should have made a text file for reference as I do now.

The driver CD has a PDF file if you search for audio nothing shows. If you scroll down all the text and pictures it shows HD Audio Driver but it doesn't tell you any info why you need to install it.

In Device Manager is shows NVIDA High Definition Audio and Realtek High Definition Audio. If right click and uninstall then click find new hardware it goes straight back in. If I search the registry for NVIDA High Definition Audio it won't let me delete it probably because its in use.

There is another strange thing about the graphics card driver CD. After a rebuild I insert the CD to install the drivers. The message says I need an internet connection to do this. To me that's total bull, all the drivers should be on the CD else what's the point in having it. I asked that question on the GeForce forum they said you don't need an internet connection to install drivers. I assure you that's what the message says. I make the internet connection and it installs.

I've never found out why a graphics are has a built in sound card.

I installed Windows 7 as request.

First install was the Gigabyte software with the Realtek audio drivers then restart.
Install VLC media player as I always use that device Add a few video's, play one no sound

After removing all the dust when I installed the original hard drive and got rid of the dust. I forgot to plugged the speakers in the wrong socket. Sound now plays

Try a video and we have sound.

We are back on the original problem I can access files on the other computer.
As with the laptop I set all shared folder to Guest which can read and write. I did the same

Network shows both computers add a short-cut on both computers. The other computer can copy and paste files

My laptop can't access the same folder/files Computer doesn't recognise the other computer even though its shown.

The sound now plays now I pugged in the green socket not the red one.

The other computer after restart doesn't show new hardware a after I installed the drivers.

I confess, I'm not sure I understand what your problem is or what exactly you're asking about.

Motherboards with Realtek HD Audio sound make use of Realtek audio driver, and the colored analog 3.5mm jacks on the back of the case. The lime green one is for feeding typical 2-channel powered speakers (i.e. 2.0 stereo). The other 3.5mm sockets are for assorted other multi-speaker configurations supported by the Realtek audio driver.

In order to get sound from these Realtek speaker jacks you must select "SPEAKERS - Realtek high definition audio" from Playback Devices popup when right-clicking the speaker icon in the system tray (lower right corner, notification area). The onboard Realtek chip and its driver and Realtek HD Audio Manager software (found in Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound) is performing preamp-like functions (including volume and tone), expecting to feed powered external speakers.

Optionally, depending on your motherboard, there might also be optical (digital) S/PDIF output capability, also supported by the Realtek audio driver. It's shown in Playback Devices as "Realtek digital output" and "Realtek digital output (optical)", and allows you to feed an external audio system (typically preamp/amp fed through optical cable from the S/PDIF optical output on the motherboard).


Totally separate from this Realtek motherboard-based analog or digital audio speaker output capability is another independent digital audio capability via HDMI, supported through video cards like nVidia products and their "HD Audio Driver" which is made optionally available for installation as part of the primary graphics driver installation process.

The nVidia HD Audio Driver supports feeding digital audio out (say to an HDTV or monitor that has built-in speakers) through the same HDMI cable you would be using to feed digital video to that display device. And again, you must select this as your audio ouptut choice using the Playback Device popup. If you want to select it and the HDTV/monitor is plugged in via HDMI and also powered on, you should see one or more "nVidia High Definition Audio" choices, probably also additionally showing the specific name of your HDTV or AVR or external player device, etc.

If you do pick one of these HDMI-enabled output digital audio playback devices supported by the nVidia HD Audio Driver, you would no longer be sending analog audio out over the Realtek HD Audio Codec device (i.e. those 3.5mm colored jacks on the back of the motherboard). You're now using the nVidia digital HD Audio driver which you installed along with the nVidia graphics driver, to supply both audio and video out over HDMI.


It's your choice. And you use Playback Devices to select your audio output of choice, either analog or digital (and if digital, via either Realtek digital or nVidia digital). And you must have the proper Realtek and/or nVidia audio driver installed in order to provide this choice.

So what's the question? This has been possible for decades, and nothing's changed about the method.
