Windows Media Player 12 Keeps freezing and linking to my pictures

I am at my wits end with "Windows Media Player.12". [FONT=&quot] [/FONT]

The problem with it is it keeps on freezing and I have to go to "Task Manager" to get the program to close and restart it, but after a short period time it dose the self same thing. I have tried to using the "Microsoft Help Section" without a great deal of success, I did find link to a "Hot fix" by Microsoft and installed it but that has not made any difference to prevent the player from freezing.

The other problem is that it has linked itself to my "pictures folder" [FONT=&quot]and[/FONT] they get loaded into the media player. I do not want this to happen as it increases the chances of the program freezing.

[/FONT] [FONT=&quot]I have had to do a complete re-install of “Windows 7 Home Premium”. Due to a search engine have a “Trojan” virus in it so it killed the hard drive.

[/FONT] [FONT=&quot]I have done a number of searches internet searches, and have tried a few with no luck; I did not have these problems before the HDD got struck by a virus.

[/FONT] [FONT=&quot]It has got to the point it frustrating me to the point I wish I could uninstall the program, as at the moment I am unemployed and do not have the funds to take it to a PC repair shop, let alone buy a new lap top.

Hello and welcome Western Star now mate have you tried running these yet? - if not do so.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f switch and if this does not make any improvement then just run this switch instead /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary

if these make no difference then run these please
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

Now you mention you had a virus on that machine do you know just what it was and how did you get rid of it?

Ok WS mate the first thing I noticed about the sfc was it was an unusual readout to me and on closer examination when you ran this scan you did not type the command line properly - see pic, and I am surprised it did not decline the scan to run as the command line typing has to be exactly what is in the tutorial.
That is you have to type sfc "space" /scannow and then hit enter so the command line will read
sfc /scannow there has to be a space between the sfc and the /scannow.

Also you did spell SCANNOE and it has to be SCANNOW Windows is very pedantic about how you type command lines. It doesn't matter if you type upper or lower case letters but spelling and spaces are all important. As I said I am surprised it ran at all and flash up a SYNTAX error.

So can you do it again and make absolutely sure the syntax and spelling is a per tutorial

It would be advisable to also run the sfc for three runs - sometimes it can miss stuff - and if it comes up no violations and/or reports corrupt files found and repaired or unfixable then please run the chkdsk as well (the second scan I kinked) in fact it might be an idea to do so anyway. Now with that scan the syntax is also all important just take your time if you are not used to doing this and remember these are two scans that are worth remembering because they are the very basic Windows files scans.

One last thing the scans are best run in safe mode and to do that > shut down > Start > tap F8 while it is starting up > it will then start up in safe mode - the screen will open in a low resolution mode (that is normal). This only means it has loaded only the Windows files and no others ie your programs etc. It may include some but I find as a general rule they are not needed, making it that only Windows files (OS) are or have to be checked.

Ok mate we still need to do the chkdsk the pic is of the SFC so you need to follow the linked tutorial and just type what Brink has instructed to do in Option 2. Now the computer will then need to shut down and restart in order for the chkdsk to run as opposed to the sfc just running.

Now you did mention in your first post you did a clean install and I am wondering just how you did that?

Personally when I clean install I always clean or wipe the drive first to make sure any remnants of the previous install are gone. Doing it by just putting in the Microsoft media DVD or stick and installing means it just formats the drive and to me that is not good enough but I am pedantic about these things, but is has saved me from having problems.

The install media just what have you got? was just some OEM copy you bought or did you just factory default the machine?

The instillation disk set I have is a genuine "Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium" single disk set.

So I am also going to assume it is an OEM copy that you have bought? If that is correct then all well and good.

The other thing I mentioned about cleaning the drive did you do that or just insert the Microsoft media and let it do it's own thing? I am only keeping on about this because in the past I have done exactly the same thing and only to find I still had issues. Cleaning the drive is like putting a brand new drive in the machine and letting the Windows install set it up. I know it is tedious but in the long run I find it saves a lot of grief (and re installs).

Now just a thought for you - if your budget would run to it what about trying a say 500GB SSD for the OS and use the drive in the machine as an external drive? I am again assuming you like to have a larger drive like the 1TB you have - but my philosophy is that a large drive loses a lot of data if it goes south and 1TB can hold a lot of data, so I always use a 500GB or 750GB SSD as max for my machines and store data as images on external drives.

But the choice is yours and I will be interested in how you installed from the media first.

I fortunately kept the original HDD so I am using that, But know the windows update has stopped working

Ok well the updates can be very erratic - at least I find them so and more so if the system is having issues.

Now I am wondering if we should not do a test on that drive now in fact it would do no harm and will show that there is or not an actual problem with it.

So can you run this and let us know the outcome please.

Yes well it is showing some system files problems there mate and I am now thinking maybe it could be down to a hard drive being out of whack - physically so run the Seatools mate and lets see what it comes up with.

Now if things start to look like there may well be a problems with the drive then best back up any data now.
