Can't mount system drive - error 0x000000ED

"...after recovering all my data..." On another computer, I hope you can test several files from each category to make sure you actually recovered what you wanted to recover. If there's any doubt, if affordable, if possible, usb or dvd boot Macrium Reflect or anything similar and do a one-pass sector by sector clone or full image of the problem HD onto any reliable external HD. With a clone tucked safely away, your data recovery odds might be better if you find out that some or most of your recovered files -- are corrupted or scrambled.

Hi guys,

Sorry for disappearing again... I wanted to come back with the HD Tune results and it took a lot longer than I had hoped...

Thanks Roland. I checked various files and all seem to work, fingers crossed...

So, what's the news?

Well after the CHKDSK, I had only tried restarting once. I did a couple more CHKDSKs, then tried again, and this time it worked! Like at the beginning of April, first it opened a "neutral" session with the following messages:

C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
Failed to connect to a Windows service
Windows could not connect to the User Profile Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the system event log for details.
Then after a few minutes, I was able to close that session and open mine.

All the software I've tested so far seems to work normally and at a normal speed, except:

  • my firewall Comodo can't start (that was already the case last time)
  • Firefox is a lot slower to start, but seems to behave normally after that

I haven't used the laptop much though, as I have been unable to configure Windows' own firewall! So only Internet Explorer and FeedDemon (that uses IE's rendering engine) go out... I've tried following various tutorials, using both the simple "Allow a program..." interface and the advanced interface, and nothing's working... I don't get it, and am immensely frustrated!

So the laptop's been on since Monday night - I haven't dared try to make it sleep or hibernate, much less restart it, I am too scared it won't start again! - and it's just been sitting there....... And I just now realized I could use IE to download HD Tune. So here are the results:

So 1) I'm obtaining a result that's the complete opposite of what I had on Linux, since this time the tests work but the SMART data won't display 2) almost all the bad bits seem to be on the 70 GB system partition... Does that mean anything?

Oh also, the total of bad sectors (reallocated + pending) had gone down a bit, from 116 to 114, last time I checked using Ubuntu.

Anything I should look at in the Event Observer? Any other advice?

I don't think you could show the results of chkdsk?

From what it looks like, your OS partition seems to be a main issue.

Have you been able to cleanup space? You'll need a lot of free space.

Some quick calculations based on the view of the error scan, the safest and easiest would be to unallocate +- 90GB of space from the beginning of the hard drive. This is why a lot of free space is needed.

EDIT: in regards to chkdsk, run this command in a command prompt and upload the file please
Code:
ChkDsk c: /f >> c:\logs\Chkdsk.Log

Hi Axe0,

A quick update:
  • I've been able to fix the Windows firewall (I just needed to restart) as well as Comodo (reinstalled it)...
  • ... so I started using the laptop again yesterday. So far so good! :)
  • since HD Tune's Health tab was empty, I installed CrystalDiskInfo. It says 81 reallocated sectors and 40 pending sectors, I check it every few hours... It hasn't changed yet *knocks on wood* (I also backup the few files I'm working on every few hours, of course)

Changing the partitioning sounds... complicated? And the deadline is just around the corner! So I think I'm gonna use the laptop like that for now. Two more weeks, it's all I'm asking for!!! And then if it still works, I'll come back here to ask about that! ;)

In the meantime, is there anything I should avoid to avoid tiring the drive out? Like at night, I usually make the laptop hibernate... Would leaving it on or making it sleep be better?

(I'm attaching the results of the first CHKDSK - the only one that showed two "Windows replaced bad clusters in file xxx" messages - and the last one, as well as CrystalDiskInfo's diagnosis. EDIT: the first CHKDSK pic is displayed in second position here!)

Would leaving it on or making it sleep be better?
Making it sleep would be better, because the actuator arm moves to a part that the hard drive does not use. In case any issue occurs, like accidentally dropping the laptop, there is less chance of the hard drive being damaged by the actuator.
Though, checking this thought from another position (waking up from sleep), may cause paging errors and/or controller errors what could result in different kind of issues. But then, when leaving it on the exact same could occur.

I would suggest to let the system sleep, besides of various risks that could occur when waking from sleep.

Thanks a lot. You've been immensely helpful.

I'm gonna leave the thread for now, and will probably be coming back in a few weeks. I might actually look into what you were suggesting on the first page, ie replacing the drive and keeping the laptop... But we're not there yet!

Once again: THANK YOU! <3
