Hi guys,
Sorry for disappearing again... I wanted to come back with the HD Tune results and it took a lot longer than I had hoped...
"...after recovering all my data..." On another computer, I hope you can test several files from each category to make sure you actually recovered what you wanted to recover. If there's any doubt, if affordable, if possible, usb or dvd boot Macrium Reflect or anything similar and do a one-pass sector by sector clone or full image of the problem HD onto any reliable external HD. With a clone tucked safely away, your data recovery odds might be better if you find out that some or most of your recovered files -- are corrupted or scrambled.
Thanks Roland. I checked various files and all seem to work, fingers crossed...

So, what's the news?
Well after the CHKDSK, I had only tried restarting once. I did a couple more CHKDSKs, then tried again, and this time it worked! Like at the beginning of April, first it opened a "neutral" session with the following messages:
C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
Failed to connect to a Windows service
Windows could not connect to the User Profile Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the system event log for details.
Then after a few minutes, I was able to close that session and open mine.
All the software I've tested so far seems to work normally and at a normal speed, except:
- my firewall Comodo can't start (that was already the case last time)
- Firefox is a lot slower to start, but seems to behave normally after that
I haven't used the laptop much though, as I have been unable to configure Windows' own firewall! So only Internet Explorer and FeedDemon (that uses IE's rendering engine) go out... I've tried following various tutorials, using both the simple "Allow a program..." interface and the advanced interface, and nothing's working... I don't get it, and am immensely frustrated!
So the laptop's been on since Monday night - I haven't dared try to make it sleep or hibernate, much less restart it, I am too scared it won't start again! - and it's just been sitting there....... And I just now realized I could use IE to download HD Tune. So here are the results:
So 1) I'm obtaining a result that's the complete opposite of what I had on Linux, since this time the tests work but the SMART data won't display 2) almost all the bad bits seem to be on the 70 GB system partition... Does that mean anything?
Oh also, the total of bad sectors (reallocated + pending) had gone down a bit, from 116 to 114, last time I checked using Ubuntu.
Anything I should look at in the Event Observer? Any other advice?
