I lost my dual OS this past week due to updating Win 10. The result somehow screwed up my mbr or is it the boot setup. When i turn on my desktop i do see the options still, but when i choose Win 7, I do see the typical rotating circle and the 4 box shape of the beginning of Win 7, but that is where it stops and goes right back to that option again and i choose Win 10. So now I am faced in reinstalling windows 7. I do have an image file made with Macruim last year and i also do have the original purchased disk. When I tried to restore Win 7 in Macruim, the restore box is inactive, for whatever reason, so I then decided to use my disk and I am greeted with a list of suggestions I could do, such as first to search for latest drivers and install those. I stopped, cause i never encountered those suggestions the first time i installed win 7 with that disk. Could someone suggest how and which alternative would be the best way to get Win 7, and does it matter if its the second OS on the same HDD? I hate to think I have to move Win 10 with all its problems when it comes to updating it...look at what it got me into in the first place.

Maybe try MR restore function without letting it load drivers; in other words, choose not to search for and install drivers.

Novel8. Did you create a rescue CD or DVD for Macrium?. If you have then you need to use it to boot your computer.

If not then you could try using your Windows 7 installation DVD to boot & then selecting the Custom option that comes up in the early stages & I think it mentions restoring from a saved image. As I say, I am not sure if it will work, but it might be worth a try. Then restore with your backed up Macrium image.

Ranger, +1 on that boot DVD! I think OP will have to use a 2nd computer to create a MR USB boot and a DVD boot. Booting that MR will open the doorway to access the external HD containing the MR-made image. Now, if the OP only made a Windows backup / restore image, then I have no idea on how to help. Getting back to MR, I found it best to have the ext HD connected and then boot the MR USB or DVD, MR will find the image faster that way.

It seems the Windows 7 installation disc does not load any USB drivers at that point, so it can't find the backed up image. You might have to do a full reinstall from the Windows 7 DVD.

I'm at school, cannot walk you through it, hopefully others here can help with the MR USB or DVD boot creation.

How do I restore my win 7 image file with Macrium

The weirdest thing happened. I booted my pc and am shown my dual OS options...win 10, win 7. as a last resort, i chose win 7 in safe mode. ..and then interrupted my watching the screen due to an important phone call and walked away. After ending the call and went back to the pc, I saw many files rolling by so fast that i couldn't even see what it was saying and that went on for about 20 minutes. Finally, it stopped and there facing me was the log in scene for Win 7. Up to that time I only had win 10, now that is gone and i have win 7 back. I have no idea how getting it back merely by going into safe mode.

You should boot to a Macrium rescue pe CD/DVD or usb flash drive as suggested. If you don't have one then you need to use another PC. I recommend you select the pe 5 option since it includes usb 3 drivers. For me the pe 5 rescue DVD (or usb flash) works fine on 2 of my PCs and picks up images on usb 3 external drives.
Just be aware that the rescue pe will require a bit of an initial download. So if you're using another persons PC they need to know this.

+1 on mjf's suggestion. PE5 is certainly the way to go.

Be sure to test that the rescue CD/DVD or USB flash drive actually works after you have set it up.

I need to remember this very important followup step! I found several USBs and a few DVDs that for whatever reason, as Yoda would put it, "USB (or DVD) boots up not".
