Win 7: Black Screen Of Death: Finding out where boot process fails

My Windows 7 Home Premium fails during boot with the Black Screen of Death, even Caps Lock won't do anything.

I can boot into Safe Mode with F8, SFC reports corrupts files to do with Group Policy but apparently this may be nothing to do with the BSOD.

How can i trace the boot process to find out where it fails?

Can any Sysinternals utilities help ?

You seem to have 2 separate Thread running, are they both associated with the same problem?.

The 'Startup Repair' failed. I believe i cannot perform a 'Repair Install' because i can only get the Windows Desktop in Safe Mode.

I tried Msconfig to disable various things but this made no difference.

Is there a way to see where the boot process is failing ?

Boot with win 7 installation disk, go to repair and launch a CMD window.
Type:
dir c: (to see if c: is your windows disk under repair)
chkdsk c: /f

Hi MHz07, I have tried a chkdsk /f.
I guess i could have done a chkdsk /f/r but there were no bad sectors found anyway.

How can i trace the boot process to find out where it fails?

Can any Sysinternals utilities help ?

You could make a video of your computer screen, using your cell phone. The video would record everything that showed on the screen. Messages which fly by too quickly to read could be read by viewing the video afterward. Also, we could perhaps see how far along you got in the boot process.

I would but there is nothing to record, just a BSoD.

If you can boot into safe mode, check device manager to see any missing drivers.

I will check and report back.
