Hi Rikiinpattaya,

Can you see and open the files if you plug the USB into another computer?

I hope this helps!

Hi Rikiinpattaya,

Yes, most of the stuff was coppied from an icon on the desktop.

The desktop icon is only a link to the folder where all the files reside, unless you created a desktop folder and saved the files into it.
I think you have just copied the desktop icon and NOT the files from the folder where they reside.
If this is the case then unfortunately I think they have gone.
Are the files on the USB very small?
Did you make a backup or image recently?

I hope this helps!

It's not what I wanted to hear but I had a feeling that this would be the case.
Thank you for your reply, only wish you could have done more.

There is one exception to the above situation, I think. If one copy and pasted a folder icon - the contents of said folder icon will also be copied from a source onto a target. I have copied many folders and their contents via copy and paste.

Hi RolandJS,

I get a window saying: The drive or link that ' name of folder ' refers to is unavailable.

In this situation I think that because of the message he received that it was probably a desktop icon as opposed to a folder icon.
Perhaps Rikiinpattaya can clarify this before we go any further!

Paul, you're right as rain! A copied shortcut does nothing about contents; I was hoping he copied at least a couple of folder icons (not their shortcut icons) - getting some if not all the data back.

We can but hope!
Perhaps Rikiinpattaya can clarify exactly what he setup and how before we go any further!

Thank you everyone for doing your best but I have resigned myself to the fact that my stuff is lost due to my inexperience of making proper backups. Yes the icons I coppied onto a stick were only shortcut icons, my mistake.
