Hi I am hoping someone can help me, I recently did windows update and there were 9 of them, one failed for internet explorer 11 and the others successfully went through. I restarted my laptop and now all I get is a black background and all my files show the name but nothing else they are just blank. I can still click on them and they will open so the files are still there.

I yahoo'd so much as well as youtubed.

The first step was trying to remove the updates but when I go to the list to remove them none of the updates show that I can remove them. When I look into the history it shows the updates but I cant remove them. I checked under the programs to see if they showed there but nothing.

my next step showed me how to clear the icon cache and delete it I have had to do this a lot because my icons kept dissappearing

I followed a youtube video and it showed my how to delete the theme and try again. that was of no help. I keep checking for updates to see if they put out a new one that would fix this and a few pop up and rebooting but nothing changes.

I also checked the ease of access settings like an article on here showed as well as the folder options making sure all foldeers and files were shown.

I dont want to reset the laptop or have to create a new user if I dont have to. I am honestly at the end of my rope with this laptop. it has been in the shop so much and there are still issues with blue screen and over heating when there was a new fan put in.

I am running windows 7 64 bit hp pavilion dv6 series it has had a few software reloads from the computer shop. Brand new hard drive put in about 2 months ago, its probably 11 years old but I cant afford a new one right now. Thank you for anyone that can help me. if need be I can provide a screen shot of what the files are doing.

Edit the only way I can get the files to show is by clicking medium icon view, if I switch it to large it goes back to being blank

Welcome to Seven Forums EmDee8907

It sounds like you currently have a lot wrong with your computer it is tempting to suggest a clean install or a factory reset. Do you know what laptop model you have? You might be able to do a factory reset if this feature is included in your particular model. Backup your personal data before attempting either of these changes.

Otherwise, it could take a lot of effort in seeking out the root trouble with the machine, and everything you have tried has already not succeeded.

thank you for the response, I am going to try and do a system restore once I get everything moved some reason my restore points are gone because one of the settings got bumped. If this doesnt work I may have to bite the bullet again and take it to a repair shop. I looked up my laptop a long time ago and there was no reset button and I never got to make a backup disc. Im just trying to bide my time until I can get a new one. I will post back once the restore is done

I could only restore yesterday before the updates and it went through successfully but im still having the same issue. I even thought it may have been my user account and so I created a new one and I had the same issue black background, and files wont show when using the large view. Anyone have any other suggestions? I checked again and there are no reset options.

I sadly dont have a disc anymore to do a install. I also did some more research and I uninstalled and it auto reinstalled my graphics card and still no change. I get a error message when trying to set any picture as background so its something with the themes. There was an article on this forum but the results page was gone and so were most of the ones I found

This is the error I get "windows photo viewer the image cant be set as a wallpaper. An internal error occurred"

If anyone can suggest something else or know how to fix this I will be so happy. I really really dont want to take it back to the shop.

Deleting the Icon Cache is the wrong solution here, you need rebuild the icon cache.

I haven't seen that one before. Is the solution in this thread any use to you? Unable to change the background This image can't be set as - Microsoft Community

For the BSODs you might want to post another question on the BSOD Help and Support Forum on this website.

So an update, short of opening my front door and tossing the laptop out.

the icons came back with no problem, I tried the second link and it doesnt do anything. the files under sample pictures for exampe show pictures of an island but when I click on them they are the actual picture. but still same error message listed above.

I found a way using command prompts to delete the windows updates that started all this and after an hour of waiting for it to restart nothing changed. the background is still blank/black and the files are still the same can only be viewed when I change to medium view.

Im out of research I think something really happened and its going to have to go back into the shop since I dont have backup discs, and the previous restore points got deleted. if anyone else has a suggestion I am all ears.

Edit I got the pictures to show instead of the island somehow one of my settings got switched but pictures and other files can only be seen in medium view. and the other issues are still happening .

So after about 200 search results I found an older one that had the same exact issues as I have, it seems my laptop had done a power failure of some sort when the updates were installing so the only way to fix it is to have the software reloaded, so back to the computer shop it goes. thank you to those who tried to help me. I will be marking this as solved because there is no way I can fix it.
