Solved HDMI - video fine, but no sound.

My PC won't output any sound over HDMI.

-I've tested all the cables. They all work fine.

-I plugged a laptop into the HDMI socket (on the amp) that i use for the desktop. Sound is carried fine.

-There's no error messages in Device Manager, it says the driver is installed fine.

-HDMI output is set as the default.

-I even replaced the HDMI card, just in case.

At this point, it seems like i am doing something very silly, or there is a particular fault with the slot on the motherboard?

However, i ran the motherboard's diagnostic program, it told me there are no issues.

I'm stuck.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hello KifCroker, welcome to the Forum

Play some audio on the computer and then open up the Volume Mixer to see where the sound is going.

To Open the V|olume Mixer, right-mouse click on the Sound icon on the bottom right corner of the display. Select Open Volume Mixer from the list.

Volume Mixer will show the Sound levels on different Devices and Applications.

Play some audio on the computer, then press Windows key + R, type sndvol into the box, press Enter.

Take a screen shot of the pop up window, which should look something like this: volume mixer.PNG

2) Run the Sound Troubleshooter, and see what errors it reports.

Not wanting to say that this applies to your hardware, but I have known that a Number of AMD Sound chips/cards do not have all the connections made for HDMI use [only the video outputs are connected], and the sound is covered by a separate SPDif or Jack Plug connection.

I have had to replace AMD Video Cards in the past for nVidia units for this very issue

You may be right, the previous card absolutely definitely did pass audio over HDMI previously though

I have had AMD units that do so, and those that do not, Every nVidia card with HDMI that I've used have had the sound integrated to the HDMI, so it can be a bit of a lottery ...

You may be able to connect the HDMI, and the headphone out jack to the Line In on your output device, a little inelegantbut should work, although you may need to fine tune the sound delay to match any video

Swapped the previous card back in. Made no difference. And that one worked fine before. (Also AMD)

I'm starting to think the issue is the motherboard?

Yes, same motherboard.

The current card is a HP Radeon HD 6570 1GB PCI-E DDR3

if that counts as a specification?

Thank you.
