Hi,
Whilst I will hang on for as long as is poss wiith Win7 64bit pro and I had to use Classic Shell soon after install as I was well and truly struggling with the familiar interface, spending more time trying to find my way around when I could go to where I wanted in seconds with XP. In fact along with the length of time it took to reinstall all my progs of which I have scores of them, I was out of action unable to work the PC for 3 months, such was the devastation caused by MSoft and the changes they made. I would like to know how those that have gone to win10 are coping, how close to win 7 you have got it and what was required ?
What if any is now better and what is worse.

Often its not just a question of installing an OS but the progs that ran on the previous one require upgrades buying, some are now subscription and that means an open ended ongoing permanent drain on meagre funds, others wont work at all. Nikon dedicated expensive slide scanner I have , where I struggled to find win7 drivers may be rendered useless, and I have no money to buy another one, also they dont make them anymore as there is no call for them, I also have an Alps printer for decals, made for xp, its things like that.

One thing I still havent resolved despite classic shell (have they a fix for this now) is the fact that you start typing the file date range you want to search on in windows explorer and its already searching before knowing what the criteria are ! It finds nothing until 99% of the search is done, how become ? open a folder its found and then go backwards from that move and it starts searching all over again.

One big problem with win 7 after xp was that decent black only text became rainbow colours edges I had text in Microsofty word as taking on different colour fringes depending on font size, yet in XP all text was a black just as in win98 and 95. Being into graphics seeing coloured text in graphics progs was very wrong, it was Msoft they had removed a text controller thing that caused this, what a mess, by dabbling with settings and removing aero I minimised the effect.

what's win10 like do they care about font appearance again ? £1400 screen and Msoft can mess it all up with removal of something that worked just fine prior 7. At the time I would have rearranged Bill Gates features as it took me a month to try and fix the issue. 3 months out of action in total due to Msoft making changes for changes sake. Why is it that each OS needs fixing by us actual users ? Those that make the OS simply dont do serious graphics computing against the clock.

Cheers

I made a post about this a couple months ago....

Making Win10 look and act like Win7

as to your fonts question - I have not noticed anything different between win10 and win7

as to your explorer search question - I only use Search Everything by voidtools. World's fastest windows search program, and you can turn off windows disk indexing.

the one thing I was warned about was "well when MS does their major updates you're going to have to recustomize all over again". Well I updated to Win10 build 1903 three days ago, and here is everything that major update changed on my system:

1) installed a newer driver for my realtek audio which put an audio icon in the system tray. Had to disable its startup icon
2) deleted my custom elevated command prompt shortcut in my start menu. Had to remake it.
3) Uninstalled my synaptics touchpad driver for my 10-year old keyboard because it lacked a driver signature. Had to re-install the driver.

That's it. Those three items took maybe 3 minutes to correct. The first couple years' of win10 were a pain for all and created an abiding attitude among many (me included) that staying with win7 forever was the only rational plan. But today, in 2019, its a piece of cake to make win10 virtually identical to win7, to keep MS out of your system at all times unless YOU choose to do an update, plus Win10 is a little quicker due to smarter caching and uses less disk space.

I have win 10 on another machine I bought and truthfully, it's pretty easy to get used to and I like it...
It's pretty similar...
I plan on upgrading my win7 machine once the support ends...

My advice is to just leave it alone and you'll be surprised to fast you get used to it...

Win 10 is not easy to get used to, not by a long shot. But this thread has made it tolerable. Still can't rid the beast of all bloatware and all spyware.

It takes time to get rid of all that unwanted crap..
What I wanted to get rid of I would Google first and then decide what to do with it..

You need patience...

Thanks, John! I'll go through those later today.
just one caveat on uninstalling versus disabling. A fully updated W10 system already takes up less space than a fully updated W7 system, and uninstalling the stuff you don't want on W10 doesn't save much space anyway, so though it feels great to uninstall everything possible its more practical to just disable it.

As just one example, at first I uninstalled the Microsoft Store. Then later I found a couple cool apps that I wanted and they were only available through the microsoft store. So I went through a bunch of gyrations to get around using ms store and did finally manage to get them installed, but in retrospect it would have been way easier have just kept ms store disabled up until I needed it, then temporarily enabled it, then disabled it after I was done. Winaero tweaker is excellent for things like that.

The goal is to be master of your system with ms as your slave, and stuffing ms in the closet is better than exiling ms from the castle altogether cuz that can result in extra work for the king.

Gates retired as CEO about 10 or 15 years ago. You'd have to rearrange the features of the new guy, but I don't know his name.

How about dumping MS into a bottomless pit and getting Linux?
