Another option for those who wants have a windows environment and dislike another option like linux there is a ReactOS right now in development but it worth support them the last update 0.4.11 can run Blender 2.57b ,Quicktime Player 7.7.9 and Evernote 5.8.3


Maybe after tree years when we have to change windows 7 we have a real option with ReactOS, but I insist that if we want it new situation become real we have to support them.

React OS is a long way from being usable. It's not even in Beta (and hasn't been for several years). Linux is a much better choice at present, with years of development, and numerous versions to try. One is sure to fit your needs. If you want to stay with Windows bad enough to use an OS designed to exactly mimic it, you should just stay with Windows. Linux does not try to be Windows, and so is not constrained by the need to look like Windows, work like Windows etc.

Do you know that windows 10 and all anterior windows versions have as a base windows 2000? maybe ReactOS is much closer that anybody can think about.

ReactOS has been under development for several years and still isn't close to being a full time replacement for Windows yet and I seriously doubt it will be ready by 01/14/2020.

Linux still remains the best alternative but, for people used to using Windows, the transition will be a huge shock since Linux is not just another Windows; it works completely differently and has to be used completely differently.

Well, I can pretty much guarantee Windows isn't going to get any better. The only way you will be able to get away from the problems of Windows, including the ones Win 7 is already being plagued with, is to ditch it entirely, leaving MacOS and one of the flavors of Linux to be the only options (and MacOS has been having its own share of problems).

ReactOS is not going to be an option; they have been working on it for several years and it is still nowhere near ready for prime time.

Linux Mint Cinnamon is probably the best Linux distro for current Windows users. It has a desktop that is most like Windows and is complete when installed so getting up and running is far easier for most Windows refugees than other flavors of Linux. I'm dreading the change over but it will be well worth it to be rid of the horror windows has become under Ballsmore (sic) and Nutella (sic).

When win 10 was announced in 2015 I joined the Insiders program and also Windows 10 Help Forums.
As I didn't like Win 10 (I do have a HDD with Win 10 Pro with v1903), I remain using Win 7 HP as my main OS (also have Lubuntu on another partition)
On last Monday I logged into tenforums.com to see what are the main problems facing Win 10 users.
I was astonished to find so many problems related to Win 10 "bugs".
Can imagine those who needs windows to daily work facing problems just because M$ didn't do their homework.
And when those "bugs" are patched and fixed, Win 10 updates to a new version that brings new "bugs".
That may explain why, even with the free "upgrade" 35% of all computers still remain running win 7. (win 10 has now 45%)

Re: Linux: Zorin 15 was released recently. I have been using it for a about a week and am extremely impressed. It is fast, appears to be stable and is simply gorgeous. I would say it could well be the best option for those who want a system that is very similar to Windows 7. It comes with Evolution email, which looks and works like Outlook. I would definitely encourage anyone interested in Linux to take a look at it.

Is it supposed to act as a hardware firewall? I'd love to learn more about this.

FTP is a protocol designed for transferring files over a network and or the Internet. If you want to learn about setting up an FTP server in windows this is a really good tutorial.

Yep me too, in fact my new build which i will be putting together soon will definitely be running on Win7 aswell.

I know the OS very well at this point and can't imagine being as productive as i am on win7 on any other OS - Everything about it feels right. My current config has some issues with saving folder view options but one of these days i'll run a fix on that too, it's not a dealbreaker in any case.

Switching to Linux is not an option imo, it's not even binary-compatible. I've tried out and worked with Ubuntu, knoppix et al in the past but can't imagine using it as a private daily driver-type OS, it looks ugly imo and is anything but intuitive to use GUI-wise.

Some time back i also read something about a whitelist/filter program which can make even older OS's more secure (basically a secondary type of UAC which only lets user-whitelisted exe's run IIRC), totally forgot what it was called though but after 2020 and MSE definition updates being depreceated on Win7 i will maybe try it out, along with switching to a new malware live protection program.

all depends.. is your current PC a custom build with a retail Windows license?
if not probably not.. you would have to buy a brand new copy of Windows off of say eBay... and that is a far cry of getting a license that has not already been activated...

you should be able to do that using the built in program called...
Microsoft BackupAndRestore I think that was what I used...

I have a dual boot with Windows 10 but I'm on Windows 7 90% of the time. I only use 10 when I have to use an app that won't run on 7. I plan on using 7 until the wheels fall off

yes. You can do this and the result will be a system that looks exactly like your old system, same programs, same tweaks, same settings, same data, but runs at the speed of a new system because its on new hardware. To make this transfer everything below must be heeded. Otherwise your only option is a Clean Install on Win7 on the new system.

Make sure the new machine has an SSD drive, which is the number one thing that will speed you up.

The below specs are not in production as of 2019 so you should probably buy a used or refurbished system.

Make sure the new machine has an intel skylake cpu and NOT a later cpu (like intel kaby lake, intel coffee lake, or amd ryzen - all of which present annoying driver challenges for win7, plus, the fastest skylake cpu is very close in single-user speed to the fastest cpu of 2019 anyway. skylake = 6xxx, kaby lake = 7xxx, coffee lake = 8xxx. I recommend the i7-6700k)

Make sure the new machine does NOT have a motherboard chipset of 370 or 390. Go with 170 or 270, both of which are driver compatible with Win7.

If you follow the above, you can clone your old hard drive right onto the new system's ssd drive. The only requirements to ensure compatibility are:

- make sure your new system's drivers are downloaded onto your old hard drive's desktop before the clone. That way you can load them easily once you boot from the new system.

- BEFORE shutting down the old system one final time, change its device driver hard drive controller to the "Standard AHCI 1.0" driver. The way to make any Win7 boot drive able to be rebooted on any different win7 hardware system is to make sure you are using the universally-compatible hard drive controller, which is the Standard AHCI 1.0 driver.

- make sure the hard drive bios setting in your old machine AND your new machine is AHCI. That is, not raid, and not IDE.
