You removed the drive without using
Safely Remove Hardware in Windows 7 - dummies
Usually, if you frequently force unplug your SD card, USB, external hard drive or any other removable device without using the Safely Remove option, the partition table of the device will be corrupted and become RAW which is unreadable by Windows. And then you might receive the disk format error message "You need to format the disk in drive X before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" when you try to access the storage device. However, it not the only reason that may lead to the format disk error. There are other reasons including:

  • The storage device suffers from a sudden power outage
  • The storage device is infected by a virus
  • The file system of the disk is not Windows-compatible
  • There are bad sectors in the USB flash drive, SD card, memory card, or external hard drive

Reboot solves many computer issues.
Drive may have gone off line, if so it won't appear in Computer; it will in Disk Management.

:ditto: "Open disk manager. Is there any disk that shows as unallocated or un formatted ?" or RAW?

Please remove all other USB Hubs/ Storage devices. Plug in only that HDD which says it needs to be formatted, and post a full screenshot of Windows Disk Management as per the guidelines here Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

Snick and billmcct

When someone reports a problem like this the first thing you should ask is a screenshot of Windows Disk Management as Megahertz07 did.

Based on what it shows one should proceed further.

Unfortunately, the first thing usually required to ask for is follow posting rules.
Response was to problems stated by OP drives not showing up, format popup, didn't get to why the band-aid USB setup.
I agree with Disk Management, offered useful/helpful information OP to rule that out, didn't go there yet (Megahertz #7)
