I Want to Keep Windows 7 Forever

I hope you didn't think i responded to you? I was directing all of that to my friend Lance1.

But being you did respond to me and maybe i am confused I thank you for being so helpful. I have found a few linux user's that are very helpful and i have been watching some of Joe Collins videos along with Chris Titus. Chris being a former windows power user and seems like he still working on them professionally. If he can do it my dumb *** can. They say the less of a power user the easier it is to switch. Well i am far from a power user. More like so dumb clown messing things up haha I have been playing i several different distros on virtual box for over a week now. Trying to narrow it down. I started in Mint cinnamon then tried mate which i thought i really liked till something went wrong and found cinnamon has more overall control and support. Then all the parts i disliked on cinnamon a guy on the mint forums helped me fix. I tried ChaletOS ZorinOS and Zorin education. I ended up putting Zorin education on a old laptop for the kids already. Hope you are reading this to Lance1?? I put zorin education in place of windows 10!! Even after fallowing a few de bloat and anti spy tutorials it was still a slow machine. Zorin education runs quick on it  See now i am poking the bear :roflmao: Clearly even Lance1 feels MS took a path unacceptable tho as he did lots of work digging deep into. We mite get him turned into a linux user? Look at me talking like i am a linux user already. I hope it works and very few rare things i need windows for. Pretty sure my old castle creations tuning program wont work on linux and wont work on windows 10 either. Only other thing i can think of that I use once in awhile is DBpoweramp. Which is windows only. I don't think there is a real linux replacement for DBpoweramp. So a good reason to keep good old windows 7 around. Lance1 over there must not play with cool things like i do haha

Hope everyone has a great day! I think we probably ruined this thread a bit tho or me. :o

How can I not read your post there fun to read. I have played with Linux. It's so funny that I should run across this post because I'm in the middle of downloading Kubuntu 19.10. Wired.. One I haven't tried is ChaletOS. I'll have to look into it. I was big into Ubuntu and had it in my VMware Workstation for a long time. I have been watching video reviews on Kubuntu and Really like what I see therefore downloading now. You should look into it too, I think you'll like what you see. I didn't like Zorin. Not my bottle of beer. I am a self taught Geek starting in the early 80's. Except for my college stint back in 2000 wich was a really fun year long course. I remember one day coming into class and the teacher was standing up in the front of the class. There were 20 of us in the class. He said OK! startup your computers. We were running Windows 2000 Pro systems. We powered up and.... Nothing! Black screen... The teacher said, Whats the matter get them started. We all looked at each other. Buy this time in my Geek life I new my hardware. I shut it down opened the case and seen right away that the IDE cable was partially off. You Do Know What A IDE Cable Is Right?? :p So I tightened up the IDE and started up and... Black screen. Again I new what that So and So did. I put up my hand and said, You wiped the hard drive didn't you. Not only did he do that he wiped the sever as well! We spent the whole day reinstalling and configuring the server and all the workstation. That was a good day. Sorry! I got nostalgic. Anyway my Kubuntu download is done so I'll spend my day playing with that. See you around the forum friend

If you don't like Zorin i don't think you will like chalet either. Them 2 i checked out for the kids computer. They feel child like to me so perfect for my kids. I was never a computer geek i was a motor head. If it has a engine or wheels i played with it. Computers are only a necessary evil. Especially now with computer controlled engines. I will check out kubuntu. 7 operating systems in a Vbox should be a good start haha

ChaletOS is a dormant distro. It hasn't had a new release since 2016 and even their forum hasn't had a post in almost a month. I tried it awhile ago and it seemed fine, but with no real support it's not the way to go for someone looking to get into Linux.

What is the update that gives you the scary blue screen and tells you to update to W10? I saw it mentioned somewhere here, but didn't write down the number. I want to make sure it's not on any of our systems come January.

Yea i am not the best with the english language. Or spelling. Eww ford lol Naw i like fords a lot. They are the vast majority of my income. I just wont own and drive them. What good is a service truck if the service truck is the truck that needs the service? haha I'm gonna get flamed now. 1970 would be nicer to work on tho and the bill i give wouldn't be as high. Mostly tho i repair farm equipment, construction equipment, powersports and i got suckered into mowers to. I avoid these newer cars as much as i can. Al tho i wish i could find a good computer geek to work with on these vehicle computers. I would love to crack the code and do what ever i want in them. Message me a pic of your car if you want i'd love to see it. Especially from the guy that only looks to the future :D

Consider youself flamed. :p All seriousness (?) aside, I loved Fords for as far back as '66. I've never had any major problems with them. My current '08 F150 has a little over 61,000 miles on it and it's been in the "hospital" only once, for a broken window motor.

I have 4 PC's running Win7 at home. The only thing they are used for is WMC to run movies from my server. They all run flawlessly. I also setup a server with 3 additional PC's at the cabin for the same reason. WMC is by far the easiest to use, and setup to watch my ripped movies. I don't need it to do anything else. I tried Win10 with both Kodi and the hacked WMC for this. I had both up and running, but had nothing but headaches: ie: unable to setup kodi to look anything like I want, to many steps to do the same thing which WMC does with 1 click. Win10 I got the WMC installed, and setup the way I want. Only to have it uninstalled every time they do a major update. Unable to network with other computers after MS got rid of homegroup. Finally unable to initiate media streaming function. So my newly built computer intended to become my new server turned into a new desktop. Needless to say I will be running Win7 until my machines drop.

To be successful with Linux, one has to keep in mind that, as I already mentioned, Linux is NOT Windows. You have to pretty much forget everything you learned about Windows.

Exactly.

Linux isn't hard to learn and the small learning curve disappears if you have the willingness and desire to learn Linux.

Learn Linux as you use Linux the important thing is to have fun with your new Linux, don't make it a chore.

You're gonna be OK Lady Fitzgerald.

A good read.

I upgraded all 5 of my systems to Win 10. I have Sledgehammer run on startup. I use Winaero Tweaker to tame the beast. Like all the past OS's I walk away and step into the future and leave to past behind. Time to get over it people.

Yeah, and you left your privacy behind, & freedom, among a few other things.

I plan on keeping a foot in both worlds, for the time being. I'll be hardening my Win 7 defenses, being ready with the final updates (non-telemetric and non-trash, using lists here and probably solely the final UpdatePack7R2 release), all with help from here and other sites.

I'll be building a Win 10 (pro) machine for the purposes of testing. Once I'm sure I can turn off the Telemetry crap and have a secure, private system...and once I undertand how to manage win 10 updates, I may swicth my main machines over. If it doesn't work out, I may keep some win 7 machines offline, using Linux to downlaod essential files and move them to the win 7 machines. I don't have it all figured out yet.

That said, 2 questions:

  • For win 7, are the Net Framework updates necessary? What is Net Frmwrk anyway?
  • For win 10, has anyone tried this method of disabling (allegedly) all telemetry? It involves some registry edits and disabling of some services.

My goal is to be completely divorced from MS, period. It may take a while (especially with my delightful learning disabilities) but, with any kind of luck, it will be well before the end of 2020. As it is now, I should be rarely using my Win 7 machines on the internet, if at all, by the end of January. The transition feels like like I forgot everything I ever knew about computers and have start from square one (whih is pretty much what I have to do) but I'm slowly getting there due to helpful people on the "interwebz".

Linux isn't hard to learn and the small learning curve disappears if you have the willingness and desire to learn Linux.

Learn Linux as you use Linux the important thing is to have fun with your new Linux, don't make it a chore.

Linux is NOT Windows

I run a business. One serious problem that has kept me from switching over to Linux is that Quickbooks doesn't have a Linux version, nor does my customer/invoicing database (Likely win 10 won't support it either). Linux doesn't have a program that can stack up to QB. I could run QB in a VM, I guess, but I hate VMs. Performance is never satisfactory.
