I Want to Keep Windows 7 Forever

I've been feeling alienated since he took over the club. I'm using old computers with an old system, and I have no smart-phone or Tablet, so the club has been becoming irrelevant lately, except to say hello to a few people. And it gets me out of the house.
But I've been getting all my support from the web for a long time, not the club.

Sounds like the episode of American Dad where Roger the alien took over as president of the HOA and wanted to teach Stan a lesson about not having a say in the house. It was really funny.

Here's a few clips.

How many others do?

The only guy I know that could claim to know that did his science degree in Geology, but then switched and completed second degree in Anatomy.

Was that true or is this a clever play on words?

...Seems to me that privacy issues are being used as an excuse to not upgrade to Win10. There are other reasons too. Just do what YOU think is right, and leave it that.

Privacy rights is a darned good reason, not just an excuse, to not downgrade to Win10. And there are plenty of other reasons, too.

Note, I have yet to do all this, but this is my plan once I go Win 10. My computer is MY COMPUTER and I'll be damned if I'll be a Redmond Muppet on strings to help with their cash flow.

Another approach, is to buy shares in Microsoft (MSFT), Apple(AAPL) and Google(aka Alphabet GOOGL) and share in the profits :) Or an ETF that includes those but covers the whole sector e.g QQQ

If you get loads of junk mail, read here: Stop Junk Mail

If you get loads of text messages that's because you're willy-nilly handing out your phone number and/or texting 11234 to donate now or what ever and now your own a s^$%$% list of epic proportions.

Learn to control who you text and hand out your phone number to. Go to your play store and look for good, reputable Apps for burner phone numbers that you can hand out instead.

Use multiple emails for things. One email for banking, eBay, Amazon, PayPal, that sort of stuff. Another email for utter crap. If you get spam in the eBay email you know either a seller sold your email address out or they got their email contact list jacked by malware and now you're on a spam list.

To combat spam. Sign up at spam cop and report the headers here:
SpamCop.net - Sign up for SpamCop reporting

If you live in the U.S, also send the spam email forwarded to the Federal Trade Commission here: FTC Unveils New E-mail Address for Deceptive Spam: [email protected] | Federal Trade Commission

I use both spamcop and the Federal Trade Commission on the rare occasions I ever do get spam. It may take a solid week of constantly reporting, but they'll stop, believe me. This has been my case for a long time. And since I'm a computer nerd, I know how to find what host and domain register they are using so I rat them out there as well if it's really bad.

Well, M$ stock is at around $158 currently and if the goal is to buy low and sell high then I'll lose my return.

Think I'll stick to my IRA and go from there...

There are things we can do to keep some of our privacy. Google isn't inevitable.
I use no Google products and no social media.
I have Malwarebytes Browser Guard eliminating trackers and
Ublock Origin blocking ads. Haven't seen an ad in many years.
Don't have a smart-phone.
I don't give out my address and phone # to stores to get those little plastic "loyalty" cards.

You do what what you can.

People who go on social media and then complain about their privacy... Grrrr

ETA-I just looked back and Lady Fitzgerald posted almost the same thing.
Actually this thread is similar to "https://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/419270-what-should-we-do-after-january-2020-a-25.html"

I'm assuming you use FireFox, which is one of the best browsers as far as nailing down security, but have you tried the NoScript add on? It's the most important security add on IMO. It blocks scripts (and java and flash) by default, so most site functionality is impaired, but it stops scripts from running without your permission. You whitelist sites on the fly. You can also allow scripts to run temporarily, and after you close that tab, the temporary scripts are reset to disallowed. The point being that no site can run a maliscious script without your permission.

NoScript

You can google for more info. There's a bit of a learning curve, and on the fly allowances can initially be a bit tedious, but as you learn what to block, it becomes 2nd nature.

Learn to control who you text and hand out your phone number to. Go to your play store and look for good, reputable Apps for burner phone numbers that you can hand out instead.....

The only problem I get with unwanted text messages comes from text spammers using autodialers and the occasional wrong number. I used to have texting in or out on my phone blocked because I hate texting but my new Credit Union seems to think texting is a safe way to verify my identity for some services. I keep the phone off all the time any way and I still have voice mail disabled so the spammers can't junk it up and jack up my monthly bill. I almost never give out my cell phone number and I'm pretty stingy with who gets my home phone (which technically is also a cell phone; that stopped all but the illicit robocalls, especially the flood of political ones prior to an election).

I never answer my home phone any more unless the caller ID pops up with a name. My caller ID only gives a name when the number calling is in my phone's phone book so I just let the call go to the voice mail box in the phones' base station (I have cordless phones scattered around the house). If the call is important, the caller will leave a message (spammers almost never do). That has cut down on the number of spam calls since, when you answer a spam call, even if you hang up immediately, you wind up going onto a live number list which then gets sold and results in getting even more spam calls.

...Use multiple emails for things. One email for banking, eBay, Amazon, PayPal, that sort of stuff. Another email for utter crap. If you get spam in the eBay email you know either a seller sold your email address out or they got their email contact list jacked by malware and now you're on a spam list.

Multiple emails are a pain to keep up with. I have only two and I'm pretty stingy with who gets them. As a result I get very little email spam (the vast majority of email that occasionally winds up in myspam folder are false hits).

I'm sorry, man. If I don't sound coherent and you have no idea what I'm talking about then this project isn't for you. But if you do really want to learn, then you have the world's knowledge under your finger tips with Google. Just Google ASN, etc on what I wrote about and learn. It's not hard to understand at all.

You mean I should Duckduckgo it or Startpage it, and I already have the knowledge of the world under my fingertips. But as I said before, it's not worth the bother for me. I have no problem with Win7, and I can't work where the rules of using my OS and computers consantly change.

And I'm not a man.:p

Oh, I'm sorry. I'm so used to males being the predominant user of forums since I started using forums back in 2006 I never knew you were a woman.

Yeah, Google can piss off. LOL I use Swisscows for my searches, but sometimes the results are different and depending on what I'm doing or having to use Google dork I use Google for that.

Hey All,

I really appreciate all of the input on this.
Lots of good advice on navigating into Windows 10.
Although I'm going to keep my three flawless Windows 7 machines, I am looking into getting a Windows 10 desktop.
For sure I'll get Pro and not Home. And I'll keep using Word and Office on my friendly 7’s

I'm still keeping my Windows 7 rigs forever.

If one plans on going the Linux route, check out Qubes. Make sure you get hardware that matches the most, I say the most compatibility possible. Read their FAQs and everything. Qubes OS: A reasonably secure operating system
I'm not sure I've ever heard of Qubes, but it looks intriguing.

I've managed to get the MacOS running in a VM in Windows but really am not too savvy about those. I guess the theory of running W7 in a VM is that if it gets corrupted iin some way, you just restart the VM?

:o

Re: the new Mac Pro, it might be too steep for me too, but it is intriguing. Would probably be my "last computer" ever...

I think it's just been released in the last few weeks, and I did read somewhere that the actual fully specced unit exceeds $60,000 US  more of a stunt than a practical device I think.

There was a time here in the UK where a few top PC Company IT executives started running Mac Air laptops, converted to run Windows as native rather than virtual OS, they liked the hardware but could not stand the OS. It was interesting talking to an exec high in the Virgin Media Internet company, Mac OS managed to generate round 30% of issues for the Tech department with less than 10 % of users
