Solved Windows 10 upgrade on Win 7 Pro hanged progress, cannot load Win 7 Pro

Hi all. My first post here.

I tried to upgrade my Windows Pro x64 system via the internet method not the Media Creation Tool via USB. The upgrade hung up at 17% for 4 hours, so I hit restart.

Now, I just want Win 7 Pro back (I own the disk) x64 and this M5A99X evo Asus MoBo is a EUFI. I cannot find anywhere to change it to a Legacy.

I pulled everything off the MoBo, reset CMOS, shorted the jumpers, took the battery out, pressed the power button for 30 sec, RAM all out, and the graphics card. This machine worked flawlessly - I built it in 2012 and put it away and have been using it sparingly for 6 mos. I have 16 gig w/ 500 gig SATA drive all clean.

My issue: I tried to figure out how to get Windows 7 Pro x64 back on, I put the disk in the DVD drive and changed the boot order and it hangs in one second at the start up logo.

Getting into SAFE MODE is tricky, as I forget if I need to press F8 or F12. When it comes up I choose SafeMode and it hangs after trying to unload a bunch of files.

I have had the BSOD with Ox000000... code.

I wonder, did the upgrade mess up my BIOS and put it as a GPT and I need EUFI or Legacy?

I am only going to keep two 500 gig hard drives to use with a Focusrite and Ableton products for music recording. This system runs normal at 2.8 GHz and up to 3250.

May I ask anyone for help please, I have been at this machine for 2 days for about 6 to 8 hours reading on the internet, Facebook and there is some possible results but they did not seem to work. I think my BIOS is ruined. When I reset the CMOS and take the battery out, the America Megatrends screen comes up telling me to press F1 to I think the BIOS EUFI screen.

I have the two hard drives formatted but I am only trying to put one on for now and when I try to load windows from disk, a screen comes up telling me to disable or disconnect any device that does not have a Bootable File!

I thank you in advance to any help on this.

PS: could I just buy another MoBo and just put the RAM and GPU and CPU on it and it would run...?

Welcome to the forum. Its hard to say not being able to see the pc. did you leave more than on drive in when doing the update as that tends to screw it as it put files on other drives you upgrade or or install with just one drive.

If you have cleared the bios all settings will be default and need resetting.

Bios should be set to secure boot uefi if you have it with no details of your system we dont know.

Your best option is to download the 10 iso create a usb drive and boot from that and do an install.

Sorry to hear your Windows 10 upgrade did not turn out right. I am not sure from what you wrote, what stage of the installation failed. It might be that the Windows 7 installation is still there.

This is not the correct way to go about the problem you have.
Did you put the jumper back onto the correct pins? You now need to check all the wiring is correct. Consult the manual if necessary. Here is a link to the ASUS manual. Download for English.
If you are still experiencing problems after that, then temporarily disconnect the HDD from the computer, and try to boot to BIOS or boot to DVD.
If the computer is still resetting, then you might want to check the AI tweaker, and turn that off, as that can stress some hardwares.
The AI tweaker is in the ADVANCED Menu. To reach the Advanced menu, enter BIOS and click on Advanced Menu/Exit button on top-right of screen.
There is no UEFI/Legacy BIOS setting on that motherboard. That is not your problem. Windows 7 can be installed on UEFI UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with

Hello Samuria!

I would have to try and reset the BIOS maybe!?!

Which I am not sure how to do that - would I flash it?

I did try the Media Creation Tool and it will not even read the USB stick, nor my DVD ROM/CD...well it does when I try to reload Windows 7 Pro x64, but I think the attempt on putting Windows 10 on the system that got hung up, changed my BIOS as a Gxx sorry forget the Windows 10 thing that allows for bigger drives than 2 TB... But need to change it back to EUFI...there is another reply below and I will try to put as much as you guys need I have written down what all the hardware is and what happened...thank you Samurai

Hello! I will try to answer in order and thank you kindly for your help!

Yes, I put the jumper back to pins 1-2 (jumper to 2-3 when resetting of course!!!), I had all hard ware off the board, even the battery.

You are right I believe I have to go in and get this BIOS back to factory?! or EUFI as I think it is stuck in GPT from the Upgrade attempt from the MS site online (not the USB method!!).

I have the manual and downloaded too to consult and I have the disk for Windows 7 Pro (my licence) and the MoBo's CD. This is a new system that was not used until now - so New/ Old Stock per se.

I have tried booting without the HDD but I can do that again as it is blank (I formatted the HDD off my Windows 7 Home Premium desktop to 'unallocated' and I am sure it was FAT32 or what it NTFS that I would have to reformat would I?

All wires and connections are all in place.

But I will go in and do what you suggested...

What I will do is pull all components out again, take the battery out, then jumper the CMOS with the computer switch off and unplugged and press the Power Button to drain the residual energy left to drain the caps...

Then,

I will keep the HDD unplugged > Go into BIOS and turn off AI Tweaker > and have the system Boot to CD/DVD first (of course!!) and put the Windows 7 Pro disk in while I boot!?!

Maybe I will format the HDD again using my other Windows 7 Home Premium desktop!

I truly appreciate the help, I've lost so much sleep over this trying to fix something I am new too as it's been 8 years (2012 since I built this) but never ran into where the GPT will override the EUFI - but makes sense as it is to help accept larger drives I get that but for me not important...take care and I will come back on and tell you how it went.:D

It is a no go!

There is no way to disable the Ai Tweaker that I can see, there is a choice for Manual, Auto and DOHP. So, I put it back to Manual (the way it was when I built it) I had it on Auto thinking it would be more efficient/balanced for speed and such.

I formatted the HDD with my Windows 7 Home Premium desktop and put a label and drive letter on it as I did not have that before, the drive was just called 'unallocated' with the Black Line in Disk Management.

So, I Booted the Asus System without the HDD plugged in, and I did yank all the components out again (battery out, CMOS pins shorted and put back to 1-2 position).

I went in and made sure the Boot sequence was where the CD drive would be the primary boot device. I plugged in the HDD after I set Ai Tweaker to manual and put the Pro 7 disk in.

It read the disk but then hung up on me again. I took photos as I do not own the expensive iPhone to do a movie (I still have a land line!!) LOL. I admit I am behind the technology for sure, but I can understand most jargon if need be on here. It is very disappointing for this old guy to not be able to fix this one especially when it was fine...just thought to give in to Windows and get Version 10.

Before I put up the photos in order of the BIOS a person on Facebook has stated this:

Can you not plus in the SSD/HDD into the working computer and using disk management or command prompt, convert it from GPT to MBR? Then try USB boot for windows 10 again? Also how is the USB drive formatted (might have to try the opposite of what it is currently formatted as).

I can either buy on Kijiji someone's windows 10 system for $350 CAD I just hate buying used you never know what you are getting...my concern is if that system (whatever it maybe) will read any of these drives I have?

Or if I can ask if you know of a good place in Canada to buy a bare bones system without the case and psu. Since this system is new but Old '2012' I would just part it out for $2! LOL Hate to see this go really.

I was going to run a interface like Focusrite 2i2 and Ableton software Live 10 Lite and/or Cubase LE5. they require 8 gigs of ram and 500 gig HDD is fine...

I apologize for wasting anyone's time, I am not very rich, and I am just trying to fix my error in attempting to better my system with the great Windows 10!!!

Take care and hope we all overcome the worldly dilemma!:-)

Those Photos, the first one is the frozen screen - the others are the navigation and what is in the BIOS and what they are set at! The others did not load it just was the BIOS settings mostly default except Ai Tweaker on Manual this time...I downloaded the Media Tool again from my Windows 10 laptop and I will try putting it on a USB at the back as a guy on FB is saying it worked for him??!!!

M5A99X Evo ver. 1.0 has a Legacy choice in BIOS!!

I tried the Media Creation Tool and put the USB on a back USB rather than the front (facebook person said it ran for him) lucky him.

I ran for a bit but no go.

Also, Win 7 Pro disk is a no go...they all freeze.

I tried both Windows 10 USB Media Creation Tool and Win 7 Pro disk without the HDD and again - freezes.

As far as getting into DOS, it is called FreeDOS. I do not know how to write to where I try to format the drive from DOS...like Format C:, but what switches do I use? I am not certain if any of the Windows 10 or Window 7 Pro loaded on my HDD - that is why I was inquiring if I have to format it...I can do that with my older machine 2009 x32 Windows Home Premium...

Upon making changes I ran into a: BootMGR missing and a few STOP CODES: WHEA UNCORRECABLE ERROR, I got SYSTEM THREAD XXXXX, and a MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION. One might be cause by enabling EHCI xxxx, the other was changing Legacy support for USB (if detected) set on Enable rather than on Auto? But, I am no pro that is for sure.

How do you guys get a MoBo back to specs from the factory?

I do have the MoBo disk, but how can I load the drivers that might set this machine back to 'normal' as I am not certain if it is stuck in EUFI or GPT. Since the Windows Media Creation Tool has Windows 10 is that not GPT and if this machine is stuck in GPT is should load?!?

And if EUFI, then Windows 7 Pro?

What a last three nights...TIA everyone!

Keep the AI tweaker on manual setting
Windows 10 creates two partitions. One of the partitions is a systems reserved partition that does not get a drive letter assigned. If you are re-installing OS on that HDD, then it is important to erase the system reserved partition as well, before you start an OS re-install.
Make sure the computer is set to boot into CD as primary device.

Go into BIOS, you should see a list of connected devices. In BIOS go into Advanced Tab, and check SATA configuration. Your HDD and CD drive should be listed. It will say "Not Present" if none connected.

Hey iko22!!!

LOL, I am still at it tonight! 3 am now here! I wonder if this MoBo is compatible with Windows 10?

I will cut and paste you reply to follow for later today, I need to go to sleep as I am getting worn down, but I do not like to give up at least not yet!

I read up on this Rufus 3.8, if I have that right, it is for systems where the Media install does not work? I did not understand how to employ it as there is no HDD or the HDD is not accessible yet.

I'd say you're problem is you're not disabling secure boot before the install. DEL key into BIOS then disable Secure Boot and set to UEFI/Legacy (Think I remember right) If you have a Win 8 or 10 PC Mount the Win 10 ISO then copy everything to a FAT32 formatted USB drive. Win 7 is "mostly" UEFI compatible and putting it on the M5A99X is kinda miss or hit. Maybe cause I never deleted the BIOS keys ? Haven't run Win 7 in Years but I also think you have to keep Secure Boot off with GPT and definately for MBR You can initialize the HDD on another PC or use Diskpart the HDD to whatever you want.

Nearly all UEFI motherboards have a Secure Boot option, granted. However, this motherboard does not have such a feature - not by that name anyway. I have checked both manual and mobo page on website, and there is nothing to suggest such a feature is included in the BIOS firmware. The mobo has a 'Advanced mode' and a 'EZ mode', and there is nothing to suggest that in either mode that the peripheral media will be disabled on boot (Secure Boot). There is no mention of 'Fast Boot' either.

A. Windows 7 will install on UEFI, see the tutorial link I provided in post #3. Maybe the installation disk is faulty - ??.
B. What USB stick are you using to install windows 10? If the stick is USB 2 or USB 1, then you need to set USB legacy mode in BIOS.
C. Yes, you can try either CD or USB on a different computer ... just make sure Secure Boot is disabled, to allow booting to the peripheral media.

I do not see a secure boot and the Legacy but iko22 said it does not support Legacy EFI. I am sure there is no secure on (if that is password area) I do not have passwords on this board. This is a EUFI BIOS and I had Windows 7 Pro x64 loaded fine and ran awesome. Because the upgrade method I used via internet instead of trying the USB (my fault). This will not load either USB front or back slots, nor the CD ROM - all hang.

I have to try once again and did, putting this think on manual instead of auto.

It is knowing where exactly to go to find the Secure, the EUFI is not going away it is user friendly and I just switch out the sequence to boot from and it just does not matter in all processes...

FAT32 to format the thumbstick for the Media Tool? I did both NTFS and FAT32, and it will not run the thumbstick via USB.

I thought going through FreeDOS I could maybe type some commands to read the cd-rom and go from there but I only get 3 choices when the screen comes on: AHSI and another AHSI, then FreeDOS, sorry I cannot remember the screen. And I tried to load all BIOS screens for you guys but on here I think we only can do one even though I tried the 6 or 5 pics at a time it does not load them...but thanks for you input!

A. Disk is fine, band new OEM only used once to load it back in 2012. I will go back to see #3. So, much confusion remembering and diagnosing I cannot recall all the good info.

B. It is a kingston 16 gb about a 1.5 years old from Best Buy I would have to go downstairs to ID it. I think it is USB 2 (is there a USB 3) I stuck this USB in my 3.0 port to try but of course it did not read it or load I mean.

C. I will not risk running either on the only Desktop I got left that is fine! LOL

Okay so the quest tonight is, go find the Secure area for this machine and disable it somehow. I tried to load the step by step BIOS for you on here but the 5 pics at a time only load the frozen screen, but the manual would just explain better than me just showing but it does have the parameters on the speeds and such. If you need any more info on what's inside this machine please let me know.

iko22 - I will work on this thing until I give up! But, are there any mobo places that sell MoBo to run ddr3 Corsair 4 gb sticks x 4 and my AMD Phenom II 6 core 1055T? (I will look too, this is my back up plan to find something that may even say Windows 10 compatible! LOL).

I watched a video last night, and the guy says - Do Not Choose the Online option! I almost threw my chair as I would say, "I know that now"!! The Media stick is the way to go he says! LOL Yes, I fully understand why!!!!!!

Thanks so much give me until this time tomorrow to let you know - I did write Asus about this - not sure via email if the advice is free but I am going to ask if they have a board for my chip and RAM as I do not want to go buy ddr4 board ram and cpu but...I asked on FB if running Ableton Live 10 Live would be harsh on a laptop and should I just stick to a Desktop as they use fans and such to keep the machine cooler...I was just not sure if music software that requires minimum i5 and 8 gigs would heat up a laptop... I like Asus as I have horrible issues with MSI and Gigabyte was hit and miss

Thank you for sticking with me, I would be hurting right about now! LOL

Cheers my friend!

A+B: If you are attempting a clean install, make sure all the partitions on the disk are erased.

B: Make sure Legacy USB Support is set to [Enabled], in the Advanced Tab of the Advanced BIOS menu.

Tried with Ai Tweaker in Manual (if this is 'shutting off' then it would be, there is no way to 'shut off' the Ai Tweaker on this board, it is there permanently!

I had the BIOS set to Legacy USB all along - so Yes that did not seem to read it.

The USB is probably a 2.0 version Kingston DataTraveler 16 GB, I went into properties and found I have the Media Creation Tool on it and it is in FAT32 file format...is the okay?

I booted with no HDD at first and the Windows 7 disk in and it froze after two seconds.

If I put the MoBo CD in, I get a screen to get into FreeDOS, but there is no way to command it to do anything as far as I can do...as I thought I would be able to read the CD from their by changing it to the CD drive but it does not show up when I type: dir

I put the windows 7 cd on the HDD thinking if the CD will not go the HDD might but nothing there.

When I format the HDD 500 gig WD SATA using my Win 7 HP desktop, I format it and make sure there is no back up partition like the main HDD, I format it in NTFS and I do not assign it a drive letter (I did it was F: but I am not sure if that will stop any progress!

I am still working on this...:(

When you say disk you mean HDD?

My disk is the Windows 7 Pro x64 bought version (I own it)!

If I try Windows 10 then it would be from the USB and I have the Legacy set to Enabled (it has been on all times!)

I have BIOS to Advanced instead of EUFI but the only difference is I just go to the top of the BIOS screen and choose 'Advanced' and it is the same I believe!

I am not sure how I got this running after I built it, the Windows 7 Pro ran just fine and I remember using the EUFI which I know now that Win 7 will run under that...so this Windows 10 online method really messed up the BIOS to never accept either it seems a hack to the system to force me to go out and buy and chuck this one away!

I read on this forum some close attempts but no luck, some issues were not quite mine, Tom's did not have anything, just odd and rare I guess.

It feels like putting gas in a diesel vehicle!!!:D Have to wash the tank out!
