For how long are you planning to stay on Windows 7?

Ah I see, well I think we can still count that as somewhat regularly
I think if I had one of those I'd probably try to use it on a regular basis, if only to use it for some basic document editing and to play some of those sweet old games, just for the sake of it. Buuut for now I think I'll stick to a near-future idea of a Windows 98 PC that I'll have next to my W7 PC

It's fun with old computers and operating systems, software and games. It gives a little nostalgic trip down memory lane. I started use computers 1987, so it has been a few and I have saved some of them under all years and still do. So my collection still grows.. But my computer room doesn't *hahaha* :roflmao:
So I just say.. go for it.. win98 is a nice OS.. But 98second edition is more stable and have USB support.

There's this prevelant idea that 'newer = better'. But that simply isn't true. Some things are getting better, while many things are getting worse. In many ways, life 200 years ago was a whole lot better. Stuff was built to last. Food was better quality. There were no bright white lights at night polluting the environment and inhibiting natural sleep cycles.

IMHO, Windows continually improved with each subsequent version, but it peaked with Windows 7. To date, I've never seen a more attractive OS. MS should have improved it, not replaced it (with junk). It didn't need replacing. All the alleged benefits of Windows 10 are just pointless gimmicks, and it's so ugly!

I could totally understand the need to release a brand new Windows if they made everything more lightweight. If it booted instantly, used resources in a vastly optimized way, and was completely streamlined under the hood to be significantly simpler and easier for developers to work with (something more like, say, Amiga OS). But that isn't the case. Win 10 is just as slow to boot, and demands even more resources. And it's dreadful!

Bad analogy, Marty. Things weren't better 200 years ago, and I can't think of a single way in which they were.
The average lifespan was about 50.
Children died of diphtheria, cholera, whooping cough, measles, polio, etc for lack of vaccines. People had more children to assure that some would live.
Battle wounds often led to amputation, as there was nothing preventing infection. Operations were performed without anesthesia or sanitary conditions.
Woman died in childbirth regularly.
There was no central heating or air conditioning in buildings.
No sanitation on public streets.
No food safety regulations.

Women wore corsets that displaced their organs.
No child labor laws
No consumer protection.
No labor unions.

But I agree in the principle that for consumer goods, newer sometimes isn't better. And Windows OS is the only consumer good that doesn't follow the fair value principle. When you buy it, you're guaranteed defects, and you're NOT guaranteed that they will all be fixed. If that were true of cars or pianos, we'd never drive or make music until the manufacturers got their ducks all in a row.

I like 7, but at some point the A-V's will stop supporting it, and we'll have to go to the Darkside.

Even then, the compare and contrast between things that lasted two hundred years ago to today doesn't make since because we are talking about a software OS that never existed two hundred years ago.

What we can say in a compare and contrast scenario is that two hundred years ago companies never turned the consumer into their product. The consumer was more of a valued asset to a company's bottom line, but at the same time treated them with respect and great customer care which reflected upon the product the company sold and it showed. Today the company throws out a product to the masses that's half baked from the jump and its philosophy is to just issue patch after patch that seem to lack good quality control. This same philosophy applies to firmware or constant game updates. Now you do need updates here and there, but like I said, a lot of these products are released for consumption half baked from the get go. And it seems the consumer is happy with this BS. If they weren't, they wouldn't buy it.

Can you imagine if two hundred years ago the Founding Fathers depended on Windows 10 to draft the Declaration of Independence?

All good points, Sim. I got carried away. Most things were made by hand, and resulted from the dedication of the maker. But if the item was defective or toxic or dangerous, you had no consumer protection laws to give you recourse. Think of the patent medicine industry.

Today we have laws, but they don't apply to software. Makes you want to scream.

That's because M$ has trained us for so many years, and everyone sees it as the norm. Yet there's no product except software for which defects are the norm. And it's not just the OS, but program software too, although not to the same extent.

I have only just joined myself, after watching & reading SevenForums for months.
Very happy to join & atmosphere seems much better than other Forums i have prev joined or seen, plus Privacy seems good too.

This is a perfect 1st Post for me, as I HATE Win10 & will NEVER migrate to it.

I very much agree with Megahertz & MarieSWE, integrity IS the right word!

There are sooo many reason why I hate it & as an ex-Analyst/Programmer, I don't like the constant updating that is done.
The more changes they make to Win10, the more probability they are introducing new bugs, even if they are fixing old ones.

A friend of mine is a lawyer (yeah, I know), with his own business at home & he had 3 PC's auto-upgrade to Win10 & didn't want to go back because of S/W incompatability issues (he seems to think this will

happen overnight). Plus, he is very conservative & doesn't really trust my PC knowledge, even though he always rings me 1st for any issues!

In the early days of his using Win10, I had to recreate his network many times, because every time Microsoft updated Win10 & it downloaded the Update, it killed his network config.

He hasn't rung me so much for a long while, so Microsoft must have (mainly) fixed this issue.

The upshot is that I deliberately stayed with Win7 & specifically blocked the Win10 auto-update feature using a tiny little tool from Steve Gibson at GRC.com, called "Never10". It doesn't install, merely changes config setting so the Win10 auto-update Update will not download.

It took quite a bit of work to get my AM4 hardware to work with Win7, but ultimately I felt it was worth it.

Linux is the best choice for those who cannot stomach W10. I started with it several years ago (I am writing this on Ubuntu 16). I would never be on Windows again if I didn't need it for that "one thing" it does that Linux cannot duplicate. For me that is music creation. I will run W7 Pro with Malwarebytes Premium for the foreseeable future, possibly the rest of my life. I keep it offline by default, only connecting for the short time I need to, to research something having to do with composing, or download something I need. And of course, practicing the usual safety precautions.

If running W7 does become too risky, there are a number of ways around that. One is to run Windows as a virtual system inside of Linux. This might require me to up my computer specs, as virtual systems are not going to be as responsive. Perhaps a better way is to use W7 as is but always offline. And use an older W7, this one running virtually in Linux, for downloads. You then just install the download to the desired drive. There usually are "offline" ways to authorize things, so once again you use the virtual W7 to do that.

There are always options. Do not go against your better judgment and give in to Big Tech.

Lifespan hasn't changed. Humans have lived around the same length for thousands of years now.

Those things were relatively rare, with occasional outbursts at various times and places. There have always been diseases and there always will, but surely you can't seriously think that health is better today? Health has never been worse, thanks to unnatural lifestyles and diets. In the past few decades, cancer rates have shot up along with all manner of other diseases and illnesses. I don't think the world has ever seen a more unhealthy population. I mean for one thing, just look at how many fat men and women there are now.

Cultures have had disinfectants for thousands of years, and there's plenty about modern culture that is highly unsanitary compared to past times.

Women dying in childbirth is always a risk, and still happens today. There have been spikes in cultures with bad birthing practices, but it wasn't necessarily "worse in the past". Cultures have been successfully birthing children for thousands of years.

Central heating has been around for at least 4,000 years. I don't know about air conditioning but I've never needed it myself.

True but safety regulations were far less relevant back then as there was no GM, non-organic, processed and packet food. Folks ate fresh, local food. These days, the quality of food is so awful that men and women are now wearing deodorant to hide their own stench!

That's just a brief fashion in one time and place. Look at the horrors of women's fashion today! You've got women with shaved heads, died hair and tattoos! Men and women everywhere are now shunning beauty and embracing ugliness. These are truly terrible, dystopian times.

Sure, there have certainly been improvements over the centuries. My point was that not everything is improving. Some things have improved over the past few centuries.

I can't think of anything that's improved in the last 20 years. Not a single thing. Society is just getting worse and worse. In some parts of the western world, parents are being banned from smacking their children! Meanwhile feminism and anti-male sexism is rampant. I could go on and on but don't want to get off-topic.

Hey! In the last 20 years we've got stuff like Windows 2000, XP, Vista (and yes I do think Vista is good), and of course, 7. I'd say those were all improvements!


I'd say stuff really started to get worse in the past 10 years, and specially in the past 5, when shit like flat design really started to take over everything technology and non technology related.


I'm talking mostly about the computer world btw, not about society in general... which has also gotten way worse in the last few years but that probably doesn't belong here heh

Not sure how far afield the mods will allow us to go, but the situation is much the same in the world of physics. Two fairly recent books, "The Trouble With Physics" by Lee Smolin, and "Not Even Wrong" by Peter Woit, document the fact that physicists have been chasing rabbits down holes for the past few decades, with their obsession with String Theory. Which has not one shred of evidence it is true. Strings have never been observed, nor have "extra dimensions." In fact, no experiment has ever been done to test the theory. That's why the second book's title is "Not Even Wrong." For a theory to be proven, it must be able to be disproved. Contrary to popular belief, experiments are done to disprove theories, rather than prove them. that is how science operates. anything less is simply not science. Thus, String Theory is not even a real theory, because it is not falsifiable.

The discovery of the "god particle" and the detection of gravitational waves are the only major achievements in physics since the Standard Model was worked out. In other words, physics has been pretty much at a standstill for the last 40 or 50 years.

Also, we went to the moon in 1969. Over fifty years ago. Everyone assumed we would have colonies there by now, and also have been to Mars. Instead, most people seem to think that fiddling around with hand-held devices and playing computer games represents actual progress.
