Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

@GDI, I'm not sure what's going on with your machine. The images you posted certainly says everything is installed correctly, so I'm at a loss as to what the issue is.
What OS version of Windows are you running - Win 7, 8, 10, or 11? Build number?
...
.

I am running Win 10 Pro - Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042. I did initially try to install prior to loading VueScan, but I have tried numerous things and frankly I am not sure where I stand at this point. I may just uninstall NikonScan and VueScan, then delete the Nikon driver. I also had found recommendations to install a "legacy" 1394 driver and tried that and the default 1394 driver during my failed efforts.

Maybe I can remove everything that I can and start again. Next would be setting up a dual boot with XP (if I can find an old XP install CD!)

Thanks

@GDI,

All I can do is point you to this post where I had no issues... Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64 - Page 60 - Windows 10 Forums (sevenforums.com).

If you've done as written in my tutorial, and/or just tried the scanner with Vuescan only, and the scanner isn't working, honestly, you might look at the scanner itself. Also check that the cable is correct/has no issues. In fact, if possible, do try another cable.

And as noted those images you'd shown earlier with the drivers shows no issues there, so another reason to look at the scanner.

BTW my tutorial was written using my Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ED scanner which does require a FireWire card. The one shown on page 60, post #599 of this tread as linked above, worked like a champ. And the reason I use the word "worked" is I no longer have the scanner or card attached to my PC having long since moved to a digital camera now.

Let me know if you have any further questions?

Thanks, I know the scanner works because it works with my old Win 7 PC that I did this work around on years ago. I do have a different cable I am swapping back and forth though, so I'll try using the same one and see what happens.

I have kept working on it and I just did backed everything out - uninstalled Nikon Scan, removed and deleted the driver dll. and followed the instructions from scratch and I THINK I made some progress in that the driver updated without an endless loop. But now, after installing Nikon Scan and trying to run it, it hangs at the Splash screen - same with VueScan.. Both used to tell me that there was no active devices.

- - - Updated - - -

Let me know if you have any further questions?

I just tried the same cable and the scanner works with it on my old machine, so now I am down to the problem being a) my new PC configuration, or b) my PCI Firewire card doesn't work....

@GDI,

Well, looking at your Device Manager images there are no issues. If there was, you'd either see a red X or yellow exclamation mark. There isn't so that says the drivers are working properly, as shown.

Also the fact Vuescan doesn't even recognize the scanner. That said, what version of Vuescan are you running? Is it up to date?

Edit:

On the "Driver Signature Enforcement" part, are you letting the driver install before disabling it?.

I am using Vuescan 9x 32 (9.7.66).

I am not sure what you mean by " are you letting the driver install before disabling it". I am disabling Signature Enforcement via the recovery startup option "7" and I install the driver. I do not disable that function at all - it appears that it resets to force signing upon reboot. So I am not disabling that before installing the driver.

I am using Vuescan 9x 32 (9.7.66).

If you're running a 64-bit OS, the drivers and programs should be 64-bit where available. Here I would suggest you use the 64-bit version of Vuescan.

Yes, the Nikon Scan 4.0.3 software you download is 32-bit, but only cause Nikon never produced a 64-bit alternate; thus the reason for the hacked .inf file. But since Vuescan has a 64-bit app, you should use that.

Again, assuming you're running a 64-bit OS. If this is a 32-bit OS then all is good.

That's exactly what I mean and how it should work. All good there.

BTW - Nikon CoolScan 9000 ED Driver for Windows 10, macOS & more | VueScan (hamrick.com) (includes some troubleshooting procedures/suggestions). Also - What is VueScan x64 | VueScan Support (hamrick.com)

All that said, since you have the latest version of Vuescan, I'd completely leave this tutorial alone and simply use Vuescan to at least get the scanner up and running. "After", if you want to try and use the Nikon Scan software, that's when I would look towards this tutorial. In sort, check that the scanner works with the known.... Vuescan, then go from there.

Good luck.

So I am in the fortunate position of being able to get my Nikon Coolscan V ED to work without an issue when I recently bought it used.

What does not seem to work so well is the Nikon Scan software V 4.03 which, whilst it allows me to scan the images, it does not allow me to utilise Digital ICE or change the bit rate or even the amount of compression on the TIFF file. I can see these things there but they cannot be accessed.

I wondered if anyone had come across that issue at all and managed to resolve it? I appreciate it is less of an issue than many of you have had.

Thanks.

Hi moggi1964,

Unfortunately, I no longer use my scanner (haven't used since 2018) so I am unable to help troubleshoot your issue. That said...

1) Though many have reported this fix works with the Nikon Coolscan V ED, these instructions were primarily written for the LS 4000, 5000, 8000, and 9000 series scanners.

2) As Windows gets more and more updates things that worked today under Windows 10 may not work tomorrow. That's just the nature of the beast.

3) Though I wrote these instructions to avoid having to pay for Vuescan, if Nikon Scan won't work, you may have to soley rely on VueScan as they seem to keep up with Windows and their updates.

At the end of the day these scanners are no longer supported by Nikon, and Microsoft via Windows has long since left the scanner behind. People like me and others have tried to keep things going, but again, the scanners are getting older and harder to maintain. WIth that, I've long since moved from it, as I'm Soley digital now.

While I can help clarify my instructions, I cannot troubleshoot the scanner or scan software since I've long moved on.

Sorry :(

Cheers sygnus21 for following up on what is a terribly old thread.

I understand fully where you are coming from and I was grasping at straws really.

I do have Vuescan and it is very good and totally worth the money but sometimes it just doesn't read some films the way the Nikon does.

Anyway, thanks again. I just got a bunch of old slides at auction so a bit on slide scanning is on the menu :)

Though the thread is old, it has still been useful to a great many, and maintained by me in answering the many questions that still get posed here. That also goes to the testament that the instructions worked / and still works for many.

I will always try to support where I can as this is my thread, but yeah, the scanner is getting older, and Windows is further making things harder, Nikon has long since dropped support, and I no longer use the scanner myself.

In the end it's those that are still using/wanting to use the scanner that keeps this "old thread" going.

I have the 5000ED so my experience isn't directly comparable, and NS403 worked fully on my Windows 7 PC with the modified driver file. You may have tried this already, but you could try re-installing NS403 after first removing as much of the existing installation as you can find.

I haven't been able to search up any evidence that there were firmware updates for your Coolscan.

One final gambit if your PC hardware supports it, would be to set up a second boot partition with Windows 7 and its drivers, and see if NS403 regains the missing functions. The later your PC hardware, the more difficult it may be to find Win7 drivers for all the components. 6th Gen Intel was still pretty thoroughly supported for Win7.

Nikon Scan 4.0.3 does/did work well under Windows 10. That while I can't speak for what moggi1964 issue is, I'm also not throwing in the towel that it suddenly no longer works under Windows 10.

Add that
moggi1964 is using a Nikon Coolscan V which isn't really one of the scanners supported here in the fix. That said, some have been able to get their Coolscan 1V to work under Windows 10 using my tutorial, so...

Also, if running Windows 10 you MUST
temporally disable Windows' Driver Signature Enforcement policy (option 1)) to install the "scanners inf" file. If not, issues will arise.

What "Nikon" scanner do you have? If you have the 5000, there's a mod that needs to be done to the inf file.

Let me know.
Thanks
I have a Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ED with a USB cable - Do you still have a device driver for this scanner (I have the 4000 version)? I just built a new Win 10 Pro X64 w/ 64GB RAM and it has been a few years since I "installed" the scanner with the unsigned device driver.

sygnus21, thanks so much for making this thread. I hadnt used my scanner in a few weeks and there was an update to windows 10. Suddenly not working, I have done both your install and installed the driver from the youtube video. Nothing seems to be working. The software just seems to get stuck when looking for the scanner. Have you noticed this issue?

Hi datrat,

I no longer use my scanner since I no longer have a need for it, and therefore cannot say what's going on with it and Windows now. Furthermore, I am now running Windows 11, so I haven't even been keeping up with Windows 10.

If you're tried everything and the scanner isn't working, suggest you give Vuescan a try (they have a trial version) if you still want to use the scanner, or move on as the scanner is getting long in the tooth anyway.

Good luck.

I actually figured it out. I had to use a texas instruments driver and add power to the card via molex. Dont know why it changed, but using a 1394 legacy driver for the host controller does not seem to work properly anymore for people with the Texas Instruments Fire Wire 800 cards.

Its this card. I had it working without additional power before, but maybe that was an accidental discovery and I should have had that separate molex plugged in the entire time.
