Is anyone still using Windows 7?

I didn't know Firefox ESR 115 can be installed on Windows 7, haven't tried. Also I haven't though about using the portable versions. I will try and confirm it. Thanks for sharing.

No need to confirm it. I use the portable most of the time even though I have 115 installed in the system. The best thing is you can customize it (userchrome.css) to look almost like Firefox 53 with a very narrow menu-bookmark-location-tab bar. The only problem is no status bar. However, everyone remembers when firefox blitzed the extensions and they all had to be rebuilt.
Just noticed they are now calling it a "Legacy" version. The last time I checked, maybe in October, it wasn't called a "legacy" version.

I prefer to use the full installed version. So I upgraded Firefox to ESR 115. However Google is more stubborn and stuck at version 109 and so is Microsoft Edge. It would be nice if there was an Internet Explorer 11 version with all the security holes patched and with new features. Back in they day it was the browser than had it all, lighter, faster, supported more features than Firefox and Chrome and you could configure everything. In Firefox you configure less and in Chrome even less. I don't like that. I want full control of what can or cannot do with the browser.

I only use Windows 7, for everything. I also run sensitive data from it.
Each day ESET blocks 2000+ connections from the internet, 90% of these coming from Microsoft.
I tried Linux Mint and Windows 11 in a VM, not worth the trouble.

I got through this thread, and have found out that many forum members are concerned about using reliable Internet browser.
Because most main browsers like Chrome, Opera, Firefox are not giving any newest upgrade versions for Windows 7 any more - I use relatively new browser Supermium - which is still supporting Windows 7 OS.
Currently upgraded to Supermium -Version 132.0.6834.226 (Official Build) (32-bit) /2025/

I would be scared of getting hacked by Russia and China top hackers more than anything. Zero day exploits and the sort would be easy to abuse.

I have the same FF version 115.27 ESR installed (Estonian),
but I use Supermium - because of it takes significantly less RAM and CPU %
I just have on this ancient Lenovo laptop (from 2006) limited hardware resources :)

Firefox 115.27 ESR works fine here. Then again I also use Supermium browser on it too. the only time I ever had a problem with windows 7 from 2007 until present day, was when I blocked myself out of my own system by accidently turning off the workstation windows service (talk about drama) :)

There is no such thing as safty online at ALL, only the remediation of it. If a hacker wants in. they will find a way. If data goes into your computer then it can also go out of your computer. firewalls work to a point, but never fully and in most cases the default windows 7 firewall works better then any "modern one" -minus one or two like Windows firewall control 5 (not the malware bytes version). GPEdit.msc is your friend on older systems. along with removing or masking certain windows built in .exe programs out of the Windows32 directory, but if thats if your not installing anything else anymore and your system is the way you like it..

"Tweaking windows 7" and hardening it is the best option even with an old browser.

Theres no such thing as "security" its always been an illusion. if man can make it, he can also break it. and programmers rule of thumb "always keep a backdoor" so, know your system, know your OS and you can still use windows 7 another 30 years (provided some open source browsers keep going with their projects)

GPEdit.msc in this case is your friend (but you can lock yourself out of your own system so use with caustion)

If you dont use any remote desktop services, shut them off or any remote software. also remove or hide all Ras dial and remote exe.x in windows32 directory.
(all you can do is limit the chances of getting hacked or accessed to a point. Its never fool proof)

And as for security well. between your ISP, your router, your settings and all the misc servers and server hops to what ever site your going to. Theres plenty out there to help midigate most things. but if your concern of updates (pointless after march 2020) (mostly telemetry and nag patches to upgrade)

I use Windows firewwall control 5 which takes over the default windows firwall as my back end and simplewall as my topical. and between those you can lock out plenty on your system.

Most of the time its programmers and companies who listen to "Microsuck" ("were not supporting windows 7 on March 20th 2020") and everyone jumps on the band wagon and does it too. Its a mental disease really, they really could support all OS'es if they really wanted too. like using the subscriber based windows 7 "security patching" (pay for monthly security patching on windows 7, yet the same patches go into windows 10 automatically via windows update) LAUGHABLE.

Anyway. Learn your system. Download the older Sysinternals form like 2012 and use the hard drive to vhd ap and clone your drive and make a Virtual machine of it.. then play around with settings and firewalls.. (best option).. just keep track of what worked and what broke.. before trying any of this on your system. not alot of options these days, but still plenty to work with. "be your own anti-virus"

only keep things on your computer that you dont mind if someone hacks to get.. always use storage drives as your "secure"

Sorry for the long post. "wifes naggin", for the honey to do list on her vacation and I just ain't that motivated yet this morning.. "stalling for time "Its a important post honey, I got to finish it"" LOL

I'm always a little puzzled when I hear people complain about how much RAM or CPU usage their browser consumes. Are you all using such mickey mouse computers that they can't cope? My home assembled box of tricks isn't running half a dozen servers and playing the latest game while I browse the internet. Never had any trouble with it not having enough capacity to do simple tasks. Maybe if I was a Microsoft groupie and been riding the latest bloatware bandwagon I would need a room full of water-cooled state of the art kit just to boot up.

I agree that Firefox ESR is fine for Windows 7. Of the alternatives, I have tried Supermium and R3dfox. I found Redfox to be more responsive, and I may switch to that once FF no longer supports W7. There are many others one could use. K-Meleon, for example. Some people use an older version of Opera, but why use something that is outdated?

Although I have several browsers installed I have been mostly using Opera and found no problems. I also have Firefox esr on board but use it only occasionally. I recently installed Supermium and it is noticeably quicker to find and load a website. I am tempted to promote it as my default browser. The translation feature is of particular interest to me as I do a lot of research and shopping on French sites. It works extremely quickly to translate an entire web page. I'm not in the least worried about updates, etc. so for me there are still a few options out there that will work in W7. R3dfox is on my list to try if any of my current ones start playing up.

At work I use an ancient Intel Celeron 2.8GHz socket 478 CPU with 1.5GB RAM (yes, THAT old) and all browsers need much time to load. Supermium is not noticeably faster than regular Google Chrome, but at least it is newer version than last Chrome 109 and can open more sites. In the other hand, R3dFox is much faster and responsive than regular Mozilla Firefox or ESR. Good job, plus it is current version and can open almost everything (haven't found yet one site that doesn't work).

For all those fellows with their modern (newer than 10 years old) computers, please don't complain how "slow" your PC with 16GB+ RAM is! You clearly haven't used anything older than 10 years old and have no comparison. Try using an "ancient" Celeron with 1.5GB RAM or less and, IF you don't smash it, then complain about it.

They say protections might conflict, but I've been running these three for years now to no ill effect.

All three at the same time? From my experience running two or more antiviruses together makes the PC much slower since one checks the other all the time.

Yes they are all running at once. I look at Task Manager quite a lot and don't see any issues there, and only very rarely (once a week) notice a slowdown that I can't explain; usually having to do with keyboard and/or mouse responsiveness (logitech wireless) but as soon as it annoys me enough to try to look into that it disappears again.

I'm not hard on this Dell Laptop E6540 i7 using primarily (and typically all are open at once) Thunderbird, Firefox, Quicken, OneTouch (scanning sw), and a program called FileCenter, and it rarely even fires-up the CPU fan. Anyway I never argue with success.
