I cannot log into the Steinberg forum for a while, it detects Windows 7 and restricts access. Is there a way to fool the detector and be able to use it like before?

That is truly detestable. I have been on that forum, and it is in general a pretty useless one IMO. But to try to thwart it, use a "user-agent switcher." It will fool the website into thinking you are on Windows 10, with a recent version of your browser. You want the one by "Ray." It is an add-on to Firefox and other browsers. It often works. I'm actually running software that should not work on Windows 7, like Vienna Instrument libraries. But it doesn't always work. In which case you can just forget about that largely useless, and now ridiculously restrictive, forum.

Addendum: If you really need that forum, you may have to bite the bullet and install Windows 10. Now that it's EOL, once you have it updated all the way, and configured to remove the bloat, Edge and other undesirable microsoft mischief, it can be somewhat tolerable.

The problem is that I don't have more drives in the laptop that could take Win 10, but I try to check, maybe the installer can be fooled if I connect an external drive to the eSata port.

By the way, Win 10 1703 is quite configurable, lacks much of the irritating stuff of the later versions, and it still worked with most stuff in November. Not with Cubase, though, but with SpectraLayers it worked.

You could install Windows 10 on virtual box. The only thing you can't do on an unactivated version is certain configurations. Virtual box 6 is the latest supported version for Windows 7. I've read here that vbox 7 works but I haven't tried it. I'd try the user browsing agent first. BTW that website isn't telling me that 7 is unsupported, only the browser (there is a difference). You can install R3dfox or Supermium to bypass that if that's all it's checking for. Both are forks of modern browsers (Firefox and Chrome) that are near the current version numbers yet still support Windows 7. It might be best for security as well. Other sites (especially financial or healthcare) might also start blocking older browsers.

Great advice by townsbg. I forgot about R3dfox. Good chance it will work. Supermium also. If you like Firefox, try R3dfox. If you like Chrome, try Supermium.

A possible option but for me the most important reason not to have a Windows 10 drive (secondary of course) is the lack of space in my laptop. So installing through eSata connection is an easier option for me and makes things easier. I just need Windows 10 for special cases, like the ones you mention, to reach certain sites (like Steinberg), and use some restricted software occasionally. A connectable drive can serve the purpose, I have just not been aware of that it is possible though eSata.

eSata is an intriguing idea, I will be interested in how that goes for you. I have an old Glyph drive, 500 GB, which I have used to store samples and data. I could copy it to my 6TB drive, then use the Glyph to install another operating system. It just sits now most of the time, I hardly ever turn it on. but it's high quality, and has lasted a long time. It is eSata capable, and I have an eSata card for my computer, so I wouldn't need to buy anything.
