stuttering in games. (mainly valve)

@sotorious: Can you please describe the actual symptom(s) in a detailed and precise manner:

- What do you see and hear?
screen locks up for 1 second and sound loops

- How often does it occur?
on the new harddrive its happened 3 times and once every hour or more. now on the old drive that i had it on it would occur every id say 20 mins or so. but never freeze more than a second. one of the recent times i had it it also did it to me on a movie audio kept playing but movie frooze, that has only happend once so far.

- Is it limited to a specific game?
Before it was css and tf2, now it just seems to be in tf2, have not gotten it in css just yet. main 2 games i play.

- Does the exact same thing ever happen outside of games?
once it happend while i was watching a tv show. on media player, ever since then it has not happened. and idk if that is under the same problem.

- Do you know of any way to reproduce an instance of [symptom] on purpose?
I wish i did it would be easier for me to test, ever since i installed it on the new drive it rarley happens (caviar black). but on the older drive it would happen so often. at least once every 20 mins or so.


At this stage, we're primarily interested in the symptoms. Let's leave the diagnoses for when we've actually got data.

if you want i posted on another forum where i pretty much described the symptoms this is when i was having the problem constant.

I just thought of something that could be affecting.

The motherboard has 3.0 Gb/s Sata II ports.

If you leave the jumper on for Caviar black and/or Green,

Specifications for the 1 TB Caviar Black drive (model WD1001FALS)

it is only set to be 1.5 Gb/s.

If the drive came with jumper on, did you remove it?
The main question here is - is the jumper on or not?

If there are any jumpers on the drive at all, power down the machine. Remove jumper(s). Power on machine to Windows and test.

i just opened my case and i could see all 8 of my pins i see no jumpers if i would see them, it would be coving atleast 2 of the pins correct???

now i have an extra sata cable thats hooked up but not being used, i just left it back there just incase i added anything later on, and i also have a sata cable hooked into my port 0 and or port 1, which i think on this mobo is better known as j-micron idk if that has anything to do with anything.

Alright, then do you have a hard drive or more set to power off after some time?

Perhaps one is starting and that's when the game freezes momentarily? (Like if a networked pc accessed the shares on it when it was off.)

Try running on high performance power mode and change the hard disk value to power down only after a really long time too. (Sorry if this has already been suggested....like I said, I didn't read everything.) Then test.

ive unplugged my externals and plugged them back in while in game, now as far as internal idk i havent tried those, even when i click power mode it still says for the hard drives to sleep in 20 mins i even thought of doing that my self.

now if its like a combination of all 4 starting up then maybe yea that can be a problem.

right now im trying to do is wait or get it to stutter again before i do any small changes like that.

I offer a reasonable solution to the problem, based on experience. If you access a sleeping HDD across the network, it can make the machine with HDD temporarily pause. I'm sure this is not the only condition it can happen under.

In your posts on the other forum, you seem to be convinced it was hard drive related. Even talking against the Caviar Green.

Maybe this advice I gave is one to try and at least eliminate as a potential cause?

But yeah...if no more stutters, then sit tight...see how it goes and try what I'm saying next if needed.

im def not blowing your opinion to the side, i just dont want to do to many things at once, incase 1 day i reformat i know exactly where to point.

but saying in the high performance mode when i have that click it still has it set as sleep in 20 mins.. is there a way to take it off to never sleep??

Probably set to 0 it will never sleep. But I'm not completely sure so to test, you could set it to something very high so it will never reach it. Then you could be certain sleeping HDD is issue or not.

turn off multicore in advanced video game settings and try trilinear....helped me out with the stutter prob a lot...also turn off aa and try aa a little at a time.

yea well its funny i was playing cs this whole time and 1 of my externals never went to sleep which i find weird. (no stutter thank god) also wondering if that no sleep activity on hdd option will that apply for the externals as well?

I never thought about it, but you can also set the paige file on another hard drive, that help performance a lot with games. That way you can read from 2 sources while playing games.

it happened the night before last, and ever since i uninstalled nod it seem to be doing ok, there was a few hiccups in tf2, but couldnt really determine, thats why im still further testing. and taking in suggestions so when it re occurs i take those steps.

It was probably just the AV for the most part. When they do background scans they tend to be heavy on the HDD, that's why you get hickups. It's kind of impossible to be reading 2 different files (unless you have certain RAID setups) on one hard drive. But then again it's the same way your cpu simulates running 2 programs at once. The idea is the more files you have to read and the more spread out they are the harder it is to read them all, and then it takes more time. That's why earlier I really thought it was HDD, you have to high of system specs anywhere else to be causing data to lock up.

yea i think the first time no doubt it was the caviar green, just for the fact on how often it would happen, but i will continue testing and seeing whats going on. sad though on xp i had an older version of nod which never interrupted me i guess this new 1 is just a bit 2 advanced.

umm ok guys well i was just playing and there was a new round starting so, my stuff froze and was the sound was on repeat and then my screen went black then came back and then unfroze........ that is defiantly a new one. just when i thought i was in the clear.... jesus christ. will this ever stop..
