I wish I would have known beforehand about being forced to sit thru a 4 hour presentation in order to receive some "free" software. I thought there would be vendor exhibits and such, along with demos of the software which I would have been interested in. What could MS possibly talk about for 4 hours? I have better use for my time.

Obviously you've never attended a MS launch event? 4 hours for a $300 free OS and other goodies, a waste of time? If you work in IT, you might of been able to get paid for attending!

I was treated to a free continental breakfast, free snacks, free drinks, a swag bag, a cool Windows phone bottle opener, a chance to win an Xbox360, and a free copy of Win7 Ultimate!


I watched four 45 minute presentations:

1. Windows 7 for the optimized desktop
2. Win7 make people productive anywhere
3. Win7 enhanced security and control
4. Win7 deployment enhancements

My half day paid, and all the freebies made it well worth it! Oh, and did I mention I got a copy of Win7 Ultimate for free??? :roflmao:
Oh, and I left during the 4th presentation when they started handing out the DVDs... to avoid major traffic! I got outta there at 4:15!

No question that your time does have value. It's good to see that you didn't stay and waste your time. You can just pick up a copy of Windows 7 at home retail chains that sell software.

As far as what did they talk about...well they had multiple sessions. Sessions on Exchange 2010, Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. I attended the Windows 7 sessions and they covered things like
1). automated deployments with WIM files
2). Bit Locker and Bit Locker to go technologies
3). App locker
4). Group policy settings to enforce both Bit Locker and App locker
5). Design differences in Windows 7
6). The new User interface, the new aero features, the problem steps recorder
7). Time for questions and answers

It easily consumed the 4 hours of time...and that was just the Windows 7 track. They covered other stuff in Server 2008 and Exchange 2010.

And being an IT pro, and the fact that this was geared towards developers or IT pros (said so right in the sign up)...all of the above was relevant. And due to fact this was IT related and that is what I do....work had no issues at all with me (or some coworkers attending) and we got paid for being there.

Also, I didn't think the presenters were top notch. The one I had was okay but he was using his personal laptop for presentations and had a bunch of junk on the computer and seemed lost looking for his files for demo.

slowrey, glad you got in and I think that's valid criticism - wasn't the most thrilling presentation I've ever been to.

But the liveliest parts came from people asking questions. Like pparks1 said, you've got a chance to ask someone from MS anything you want during the sessions, as well as in between them. That's a golden opportunity.

Sadly, events are US only and too far for most of the world to travel to.

They sound great - just most people can't get to them.

Those who did have the opportunity were fortunate.

It's not so much about having something to complain about but more about not being desperate enough to devote 4 hours of my life to getting a piece of "free software". For instance a local restaurant was offering a free meal today for Veterans in honor of the Veteran's Day holiday. Since I'm a vet, my wife and I went over to have dinner. When we arrived the line was out the door. We're not that desperate for a free meal to want to stand in line for it so we turned around and went back home.

BTW, I've never paid $300 for any piece of software and I certainly wouldn't start by paying retail price for Win 7 Ultimate!

Again, for us IT Professionals the material presented was worthwhile. Add to that, the fact that Windows 7 Ultimate retail is $319 in stores...means that $319/4 = $79.75 an hour. Perhaps for a computer enthusiast, it wouldn't be a worthwhile use of time...but then again...this wasn't geared toward home enthusiasts..it was for IT Professionals and Developers. For me, it substituted for 1/2 a day of work...no personal time needed. I was on the clock and getting paid. I went with 3 other employees from my company and some employees from my past company. Not a single one of us left feeling our time was wasted.

Microsoft was willing to give you a product that was worth quite a bit of money if you would just take the time to be in the event...I know there are thousands let alone millions who would of been glad to be given the opportunity to be at the event let alone receiving a copy of Win7 Ultimate...

Except nowhere did I say I wanted to show up, get the DVD and leave which pretty much negates everything you said. However, nowhere was there mention that I had to stay thru a 4 hour session and could only get the software at the end of that session. I would have been willing to sit thru the morning session but they insisted I had to leave and come back for the afternoon session.

I expected to spend an hour or two but not four or more.

I think as a Sr software Engr at a major software company with 23 years experience, I just might qualify as an IT Pro. Getting paid for my time wasn't an issue but wasting company time that could be put to better use is an issue to me. I guess I'm just too old fashioned in that regard.

As an IT pro, I will have access to Win 7 for my work whenever I need it and wouldn't need the "free copy" for work purposes. Since you all were apparently "on the clock" then the free copy you received will be used in your work and not for your personal use, right?

BTW, if anyone pays full retail of $319 for Ultimate they're a fool and I have a bridge I want to sell them!

So...you wanted to give as little of effort possible for something free???

You never answered what exactly did you expect to do to receive the DVD...you knew (by the details of the event) how long the event was going to be so the time needed to stay for the handout shouldn't have been a shock...

I would understand your frustration if you had to also pay for the DVD but YOU WERE GOING TO RECEIVE SOMETHING FOR FREE AS LONG AS YOU STUCK AROUND FOR THE EVENT!!!

Maybe i should have been more stubborn...i recieved only the 32Bit DVD...

As did pretty much everybody else. When people officially complained, some were told, "he happy you got anything for free".

Just to clarify...i wasn't complaining.
