stuttering in games. (mainly valve)

sounds like a plan im gonna do more testing with this whole sound gig i found, if that fixes it then fantastic!!!! but if it doesnt time to move onto the hard drive. im just stalling that for last cause for 1 i dont wanna reinstall windows 7 for the 3rd time in less than a month. so im trying to be 100 % positive its that.

cause if i end up doing the partition / getting a new drive..... and it still happens someone will get hurt...

I'm not saying it'll fix everything, but the whole thing is if you install a fresh HDD and fresh format and you don't get issues.... and as the hdd gets older/fills up.... it might be related to hdd performance, because as time goes on the hdd fills up and looses performance. That's why a fresh format and fresh install are always so crisp. Nobody ever thinks of that, and it can cause a lot of performance issues.

How so? If you defrag regularly, and unless the disk is dying, everything should be fine.

I wanted to say that after reading an earlier post in this thread about sound, I went and disabled my sound card in the device manager and managed to play TF2/HL2:EP2 without the annoying stutter. As soon as I re-enabled my sound card, the stutter was back. In TF2 it's bad enough to make the game unplayable. So nothing new to add really, just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone in this problem.

Why would it fix something that isn't broken? It consolidates files. If something is broken its the hard disk. What are you getting at?

Sotorious, have you tried what's suggested here? I gave it a shot and it seemed to greatly improve the smoothness of my TF2 online play.

Have to sleep for now, but tomorrow when I get home from work I'll definitely give that solution a bit more testing.

I think you have different problems than me or at least additional ones. Because I had only this lag issue in Source games and in Overlord. Every other game I tested runs smooth in Win7 and like I mention earlier, when I reboot into WinXP all games runs smooth. In fact I never experienced such an issue until now in Win7.

I tested C&C3, Red Alert 3, Civilization IV, Mass Effect, NWN2, Dragon Age, Call of Duty MW2, Oblivion, Dawn of War 2, Total War Medieval II + Empire, Splinter Cell, Mirror's Edge, Prey, Sims 3.
All this games runs smooth. Only all source games and Overlord had this strange lag and/or pauses.
Anyway, thanks to this reg fix, it is gone.
Thanks again to hipzilla for point this thread out too us.

Yea i dont have that many pc games mostly steam / valve issued games...
as far as cod mw2 goes it runs smooth it just happens to be that 1 level which is weird every other level runs like a dream, but as far as MW2 i think im trying to fix a problem they need to fix, so im going to leave that alone. I just found it weird how i didnt lag on that level with absolutely no sound enabled. What i did now was that guy said in that thread, and uninstalled my on board sound card.

css seems to be ok but ever since i messed with my options i did something to the sound (not that big of a deal) and as of tf2 it seems to be a lot smoother even when the frame rate drops to about the high 40's thats also something they need to fix.

i think i done the best i can do i really dont know what else to do.. whats left is the hard drive that someone suggested in this thread.

Ok, this might sound stupid but lets give it a go.
If the problem is in the HD, lets try to run it directly from the RAM.

First, download RAMDisk, install it. Follow all those steps, if you have any problem installing it just PM me.
Then, setup the size of the RAM Partition and pick a game that stutters which is not really big, so you don't have to use so many RAM.
Copy the game directory in the RAMDisk partition and run it.
If it stutters, then the problem is not in the HD and we rule it out.

Almost same setup and just tried this and seem to seem to play smooth again. The only bad thing is now I have to confront creative to fix there driver and to switch back and forth from onboard for play and creative for everything else.

So you're able to play TF2/etc. online stutter free with your onboard sound enabled? I've got my onboard sound disabled via the BIOS (has been this way since I built this system), didn't even bother to try gaming with it instead of my XFi.

Creative and their drivers have been really disappointing for a while now (there was definitely trouble with Vista as well), I wouldn't hold your breath for a fix from them.
