Got a samsung nc10 netbook that has been bsod for a couple of days It originally had XP on but i installed win 7 a couple of weeks ago. Im almsot certain it is a hardware problem so im sending it back to samsung for 'repairs' however, will they void the warranty or blame the fact that ive put win 7 on it as the cause? I dont have a win7 COA on the base as its stuck to the side of my pc so there is only the XP COA on netbook.
so basically, does it matter that ive put win 7 on it? should i try and put xp back on it before it goes off to them? advice appreciated, thankyou!

Normally your warranty is no longer valid if you change / add hardware. Upgraded OS should in my opinion not void your warranty.

I was advised that if I ever need work on my Dell, I should return everything to factory specs, because changing the OS does invalidate the warranty. Lets be honest, they use vague terms in the warranty, like "changes", they can basically do what they want.

Use your best judgement, little more work now, or possibly being out of warranty.

Definately remove the memory.

Yeah, would be a good idea to have it at the state it was when bought as much as possible. Also, while most of the companies are like Kari said, I know for a fact that some of the companies tend to void the warranty with an OS change, but I don't think Samsung is part of them.

Yes, reading Richard post here above I would recommend you remove the added memory and do a factory restore, putting it back as it was with XP.

Interesting, I have never heard of void warranty because of OS upgrade.

righteo, im hoping the 1gb memory is built in the same as the advent becuase i dont have a 1gb stick for it. i bought it second hand already upgraded. i wouldnt have thought the battery would make a difference as that was upped from a 6 to 9 cell, but again i dont have a 6 cell battery to put in it.
main concern at the minute is how im going to get xp back on it because ive been trying to create a boot key and failing miserabley so far! tired and havent got the patience to try again tonight.

Samsung put little 'warranty void' stickers on those netbooks don't they? I've read elsewhere that they are extremely stern on machines returned to them which show any signs of 'tampering' too...

Are you in the UK?

Sale of Goods Act is the thing - how long have you had the machine?

SGA always applies.

Warranty is voluntarily given by the retailer/manufacturer. No need to give one at all. It cannot override SGA.

A lot of people are fooled by that.

I hope not! this hasnt got any on and if it did then the previous owner has done it.
im debating now whether to even bother sending them it! my main concern would be to get a hefty bill off them for repairs etc!

I have already rang them up yesterday and wasnt asked for any proof of purchase, where i bought it from etc so i havnt told any porkies. havnt told them i bought it second hand though. I just assume that it comes with 12 months manufacturers warranty if hardware fails. They have said they will send a courier to pick it up and return it to them for repairs They never mentioned anything else on the phone.
ask no questions, tell no lies. im no good at lieing, just dont tell the whole truth

OK. If you bought it second hand off ebay - then calling on the warranty is the best way forward.

Better to read it first. There is probably a time during which they will repair it free under the guarantee ( very likely to be at least 12mths) - but will almost certainly need proof of original purchase date - e.g. the original receipt - unless there is clear proof of the date of manufacture.

Probably a good idea to make it like it was - less hassle.

I might just ring them up and ask them a few questions like... if i was to upgrade the ram, would i void warranty.... if i use different OS etc etc. wont give them any personal details over the phone tho :D see if i get a nice helpful person on the other end! act like a dumb woman (well i kind of am :p) see what i can find out!

meant to add, the date of manufacture is on the serial number underneath so it was most definately made in April 09! The bios also states when it was purchased (June 09) so that how come i know the dates otherwise wouldnt have a clue!

So ive been trying to install win xp. Just wasnt happening although i managed to format the c: and install the setup files before it rebooted and decided it wasnt going to carry on.
after turning it on and off a couple of times, It now just displays a white screen with a few black lines so definately cant do anything now!

Rang samsung up this morning to arrange them to pick it up.. I asked them about the memory upgrade and if that would void warranty. They said no, aslong as that isnt the problem with it then it wont make any difference. The guy i spoke to said it doesnt sound like that is the problem anyway but if that was the problem then i would be billed for it. Never asked about the OS though, im hoping they wont notice lol but wouldnt have thought that would matter either.

Have now fished the old dell laptop off the top of the wardrobe and wondering how on earth i ever managed with this 'huge' thing lol!
