Hi guys,

I'm going crazy here... I am looking for a way to enable VPN connections TO my Windows 7 machine. I cannot seem to find this anywhere.

I know this was kinda hidden on Vista too, but in Win7 I cannot even find it!

Can someone PLEASE point me in the right direction. I'd like to be able to connect via VPN to my home machine when I'm not around, you know - access shared folders, printers and such.

I really hope they put this in the beta and that I am just blind and not seeing it.

nice. what i am curious about is the passwords that are already in the admin, guest, and my account. i did not, since i am a single user, set up passwords on my machine. especially not one that is 15 characters. are there 'default' passwords?

am thinking of using a remote connection to check my box from work via the internet.

thanks.

the fifteen digits you are referring to is not a password its a default that they put there if you haven't made a password just make one for your user account.
to use the admin account you need to do some modifications to get it to show up
here is the tut to enable it http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/507-built-administrator-account-enable-disable.html?filter

ir you want to check your email account you should set up remote desktop sharing

I knew about this in Vista, but if I recall it was under Tools menu or something.

It never even came to my mind to look into the FILE menu. Yea I guess, creating a new connection deals with "Files!".... Amazing :), what is this, Linux?

Yea, i feel like "duh" since you said that lol... i had one look at the help files for something else and thought " well ... that was nothing".

Ok, now on same vpn thing. No problems setting up, i just have a gripe now and wonder if there is a fix, i cant find one. Problem is, after creating user/pass for vpn, it now puts that user on the welcome screen. Now if say i had a somewhat dedicated vpn machine, and setup numerous users, I dont want them all cluttered up on the welcome screen. I went thru properties and also user accounts and seen nothing. Just that of course the vpn users dont show up under user accounts.

Is there a "fix" for this brad... or should i fire up the feedback?

You can explicitly tell windows not to show a particular user in the logon screen by doing the following tested steps;

Open regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
Select the user name you want to hide and change it's value to 0.

Note: If keys SpecialAccounts and UserList does not exist, you can create them accordingly. To add a user, create a new DWORD32 with the value name = <username you want to hide> and a value data = 0. You can do this to all the accounts you want to hide from the welcome screen.

Hope that answers your question.

Cheers ;)

Great! Thanks for the info and response Nos. Will have a look at it. I just cant understand why MS wouldnt make a more user friendly visible option. A simple checkmark box would be suffice, maybe along with a possible "advanced" button or similar. Feedback i guess :geek:

thanks again :)

not sure what you mean but i used an existing account when i set it up so no additional account was put on the login screen .
if you setup numerous accounts on one machine then you need to see them at welcome screen or you wont be able to use them anyway .

He most likely created a separate account for VPN logins, so he does not want to see that account on the login screen since it's not used for local logins.

I have the same setup - an account called Remote User, which I use when I log into the system via VPN.

Also, it comes in handy when you install VMWare, or say Apache2Triad, which install their own user accounts under which they run services, but it'd suck to see them on the login screen :)

Yea, I was looking for that option "show connection status in the taskbar" as well... Could not find it for incoming connections...

Anyone know where it is?

Yea, I was looking for that option "show connection status in the taskbar" as well... Could not find it for incoming connections...

Anyone know where it is?

You're welcome :)
if you sit the mouse over the network icon in the task bar it will show if your connected or not

cheers brad
