Computer to HDTV Monitor ??

I just finished a new machine, EVGA VIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ card. The card has two DVI outlets - 1 S Video outlet. I'm using a Sony Bravia 32" XBR for a monitor.

Using a DVI to HDMI adapter gives me a not so good picture.
Using a DVI to VGA adapter and connecting to the TV in the "PC IN" area, give me a better picture, but still nothing all that great.

Using my Dell laptop, with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G video and an HDMI outlet gives me a great picture when I go HDMI to HDMI.

I know I am not happy with what I have, I don't know what to do next.

My 1st thought, based on the laptop experience, is to get a video card with an HDMI outlet.

My 2nd thought is to try the S Video connection, which I would if I had a cable.

My 3rd thought was to come here and ask advice from people who probably can come up with more than 3 thoughts at a time.

Any thoughts appreciated.

12 GB DDR3 SDRAM

The TV will do 120 HZ, I'll give it a try.

ETA - Good idea - I had a cable with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other. It and some adjustments to the TV made a big big difference.

All I show is 60HZ for a refresh rate, the TV will take 120. I'll have to look around and see if there is some software/drivers for the TV like there is for monitors. This TV as a monitor deal was a last minute decision and I wasn't as prepared as I should ahve been.

S video will give you the best video for the limited capabilities of your card.
If you want true Hi def install a new card that is HDMI capable.

The 9800 GTX is more than capable for DHCP. I had the same problem initially with my HTPC build when using DVI-HDMI adapter. The "issue" is that images appeared too sharp and some times with too much contrast, and this issue is hard to explain/capture b/c screenshots won't show it. N/e how, I never isolated it to a single source b/c the TV I use (LN46A550) had a display problem with this very exact DVI-HDMI conversion and a solution was found on the web that suggested changing the HDMI port. At the same time, I updated the video card driver (8800GT), and the problem went away. So if by "Using a DVI to HDMI adapter gives me a not so good picture." you mean the same thing as I described above, try those 2 solutions out and hope for the best.

Are there any cards you'd recommend? I've always been partial to NVIDIA, but open to ideas.

A cheap HDMI card that is HDCP compatible - look for something like a 4670 with HDMI output.

Yeah. You could try setting a custom profile. There's information around here someplace on the forum for that. Not sure where. Maybe check the 59 Hz thread.

I don't think that's a video card option. The way that TV's put out 120 or 240 Hz is by doubling or quadrupling the refresh rates of the video feeds, but that's done in the TV, not in the video card.

The video card can do it. That's how the 3D glasses work from NVIDIA. The glasses need a monitor with 100 Hz or higher...something like that.

You don't need to get a new card. The one you have is more than capable. You can change your refresh rates from within NVidia control panel. Just right click somewhere on your desktop and it should be a selection on your pop up menu. There are all kinds of things in there that you can do to tweak your display. I would go into detail but my work pc doesn't have NVIDIA control panel and I can't pull it from the sponge from between the ears.

First of all, thanks to all for the replies - I knew you people would have thoughts.

So far, I got a good HDTV cable & kept the same video card.

Followed the suggestion about a custom resolution:

original setting - 1920 x 1080 x 60

Every time I tried to change the 60 to a higher number (tried 70, 100, & 120) saved it and then read:

1920 x 1080 x progressive

I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it sounds really cool and the picture is fantastic. I think I'll leave it alone.

Progressive means that the frames are not interlaced.

Interlaced, in simplest-easy-to-understand-terms, means the picture is separated into two fields which then blend together to create one frame. It all happens so fast, you cant tell that half the picture is missing - each field commonly at ~ 1/60 for NTSC.

Yeah, that's what I thought - plugged cable from computer to "computer in" on TV, no sound. Yet speakers work in the same jack. Time to RFM on the TV sound.
