Computer to HDTV Monitor ??

What other connections do you gave on you TV?

I don't see any other connections except the 1.8 mm speaker cable from computer to TV PC IN area.

I didn't put a sound card in this machine, because I didn't think I'd need one. This HDTV monitor was an after thought.

I'd love to have a single HDMI cable to the TV that would carry sound and video - like the regular TV.

As usual, it is back to the research dept., I know zilch about this stuff.

BUT, I was a Training Officer for the local prison system and am certified in the proper application of handcuffs, leg irons, and belly chains. I am also able to perform a proper strip search and the "fun-for-all" body cavity search.

While these talents have not been much help in getting a job after retirement, and certainly were not well received on Match.com under HOBBIES, I do list them here so you know I am not totally talentless

Anyhow, you can connect the output of your computer sound to the audio in on the tv. The tv probably accepts rca jacks so you'll need a 1'8" stereo male cable to dual mono rca male.


Radioshack has these.

If your computer speaker system has an output, you can connect the tv to that so both the speakers and tv will have sound at the same time. You can use volume control on either to adjust at any time.

All I have was a pair of Creative speakers that must be 127 years old - I was never into sound that much. I'll try the rca idea - a Radio Shack is less than a mile from me.

ETA - got the RCA jacks, tried every input on the TV - ZILCH. Tried every TV menu setting ZILCH.

Rest time - will look at this again tomorrow. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Tomorrow came early - problem solved - it is the sound system in the TV - TV being RMA'd - BUT - I learned a bunch of things today - this is good.

As an aside, you'd want a GPU that is HDCP compliant and has support for HDMI 1.3a. ATI cards can carry sound + video through one HDMI cable. You may need to adjust some settings in catalyst control centre though.

I like the idea of the one HDMI cable - I am going to look into that when I pick out another monitor - thanks.

HDMI sound will be easily selected in the control panel's sound default output, not in CCC.

In order to get sound and video to the monitor in one HDMI cable, do you need a combination sound/video card, or are the sound and video card linked together?

ATI's video cards since the 2000 series have had the ability to pass onboard sound through the DVI/HDMI port to the display. If Im not mistaken, when audio goes through HDMI to the TV, you will probably lose the surround sound channels and end up with stereo.

You should see an HDMI audio interface in your audio properties if the driver was installed properly. You may have to manually enable it but it's there. Pretty sure NVIDIA has the capability now too although I haven't tried it on my gaming PC.
