Pirated Windows 7 – How to Tell.

Microsoft considers users running pirated copies of its software as victims of the piracy phenomenon. And although in some cases, end users are themselves pirates, in others, customers indeed fall victim to counterfeiters that sell them bootlegged products masqueraded as genuine. The Redmond-based company is well aware that in certain cases, the bootleggers use advanced technology to replicate Microsoft software, to the point where even its own employees can barely tell the difference between genuine and pirated products. This is why the software giant is offering How to Tell to customers, an online resource that allows them to compare the products they acquired against genuine software, and see whether they were tricked into buying pirated products or not.

You'd be surprised how many fake disks are seized from shipments which originated in the far east and are headed for Europe (very probably the US too)... and not only MS disks either, everything from Photoshop to console games is being peddled, even fake hardware often comes to light...

There's no secret regards what are called warez forums which distribute links to what are called cracked or patched programs, games, and multimedia material - it's as easy as being registered on one of these forums and copying the links posted... however it should be borne in mind some clandestine programs are repacked with trojans designed to turn the end users computer into a spam-bot, or steal the users personal or financial information...

Yes, there are some things that I wouldn't touch with a 10ft. poll and a hacked or pirated copy of my operating systems is one of those things. I simply cannot believe how many people are willing to just take their chances and assume that all of these things are 100% clean and original.

The trouble with MS anti-piracy measures are the impositions placed on legitimate users, when frequently MS fail to distinguish who is a genuine user and who might utilise pirated software - or be using an improperly distributed key.

Some of the prior WGA behaviour is tantamount to spyware... :sarc:

Microsoft's actual treatment of those who are genuine victims of counterfeit Operating systems is actually very lenient - as they are often victims rather than pirates.

If you report a disk containing the Microsoft hologram and other "Genuine" Microsoft anti piracy embellishments, plus details of the source they will likely supply you with a genuine copy of the software, free of charge or at least highly discounted.

It is the large scale perpetrators of piracy that they wish to stop not the often innocent users.

Well, the link from this article leads to a page where the validation button doesn't seem to work. So I dunno, I can't sleep till I can validate this copy of Windows, which MS sent me...

I think the actual validation for win7 is still in the "Coming Soon" category. Nothing unusual in that - they just tend to start enforcing it some time after the release - perhaps until all the RC copies timeouts are gone, but I would expect it sooner

Hi all
surprised that MS hasn't yet got "Validation" to work -- "Normal activation" doesn't always fail on "Pirate" versions.

I tested one - only as a TEST as I do NOT support Pirated software - but we should at least know what we are up against) and who on this Forum weren't testing "Un-official" builds before W7 was released - many many people I suspect.

I'm sure it will come - but DON'T use any version you suspect belongs to the category shown in the screenshot.

Usually W7 versions from decent retail outlets, Technet, University official student programs, Workplaces etc are OK -- only if you use a Workplace W7 version make sure it's licensed for your machine by your company or via a USE AT HOME category.

Microsoft does not always get it right

Hi there from another desert the Mojave in California-

My copy of W7 is completely legal but I do not like MS or any other vendor poking around in my system without express permission which they do not and never will have. When I installed software to get rid of Windows Activation they put a little white tag in the lower right corner of my display saying this copy of W7 was not legal. Now it is a badge of honor and a story will be going off to the Seattle Times about MS abuses. As a long term volunteer on America's public lands, 10,000 hours plus performing trash pickup, repairs to federal buildings, writing and performing graphic design tasks, patrol of the back country etc. this sort of invasion is not tolerated and should not be by software users.

Ok well, just be careful mojavejack. I dont know where you got the software that you used to get rid of the Activation thing, but 70% of them are infested with viruses.... You might have put something on your computer that is more invasive than MS has. Also, if MS does find a way around these hacks then you wont be able to do any (edit) MS updates on your computer.
