I need help with NVidia Fx 5500

Oh my. I honestly couldn't tell you then.

This is rather odd, I haven't seen that before. :| If you want aero the only other thing I could suggest at this time is purchasing a newer card (could probably get a good one very cheap at newegg, that supports aero).

Sorry that I couldn't have been of more help. :|

Oh you did? Well I suggest you look a bit more into (bing and google are your friends) hardware before purchasing it.

Older hardware is less likely to be compatabile with Windows 7, though from what I see anything GeForce 6000+ (so.. 6000 > 9000) is supported by that original driver I was being linked to falsely!

Nessy, can you please post your entire system specs...Mainboard, CPU, Hard drives etc.? Is your machine a custom build, or did you buy it from a store?

Edit: Also, try running the Windows Experience Index...I have an idea.

I did not honestly think that you could still buy a 5000 series card. Honestly, you can not expect nVidia to continue to write drivers for 10 year old cards to use with a new not yet released Operating System.

I hope you're issue's been resolved by now (didn't read it all) but, rule 1 with NVidia, never, EVER buy ANY FX series card. Even when these came out, they were deemed cheap, low-end one-off's by the industry and were never fully supported. Good luck with it.

I have exactly the same video card on my WORK PC. Runs Aero fine in the Vista Ultimate O/S.

Last night I repartitioned my HDD, and on the new E Drive, installed RC Win7.

When I first booted in to WIN7, no Aero. Windows Update then automatically set off to see if there were any Updates available and downloaded driver WDDM NVIDIA 7.14.10.9687 (a 32MB download), set a restore point, installed, I rebooted and now no problem with Aero, all good.

Try doing a search for available updates thru Windows Update...that's my suggestion anyway.

Good luck
Rod

I am using the same graphics card on my home PC that is nVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 256 MB RAM. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC and everything worked smoothly including Aero to the highest quality where drivers were from Windows Update.

Now, I got licensed Windows 7 Professional. When I update the driver from Windows Update everything works just fine until I shut down the PC and turn it on again. When I do that after OS finishes loading, screen suddenly goes blank. After like 2 minutes, system gives a blue screen and restarts. This time Windows successfully makes it to desktop saying that Windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown. When the report is prepared it says something went wrong with the video card drivers. The same thing happens even if I install the latest drivers for Vista directly from nVIDIA website as there is no Windows 7 drivers for FX 5500.

I still do not have any idea why this happens. However, I am thinking to replace the video card as everyone suggested here.

Firefox331 welcome to the Seven Forums.

Assuming your card is AGP, looking at your specs the problem is you have a motherboard,

GIGABYTE GA-8IG1000MK (Rev. 1.x) | Emaplaadid - Specification

with an unsupported chipset (865G) that support for was dropped about 5 years ago. As a result it is running however it can on the native drivers within Windows 7. Unfortunately since those same native drivers came from Intel, there is again no support for that chipset in it (there wasn't even a Vista driver for it).

If the card is AGP it will require a working AGP driver (part of the chipset and not to be confused with the video card driver), in order for the video driver to install and/or work properly. One thing you can try with it is to try the last XP driver,

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=8177&ProdId=1049&lang=eng

installing it in compatibility mode,

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html

If that works then the last Vista driver for that card linked to in post #9 should then install.

If nothing works then it might be better to hold off on Windows 7 until such a time as you get a new computer that is supported under Windows 7.

Your graphics card is ancient. It can't handle Aero. I had the same GPU on my first PC, which I bought like 7 years ago. There are some pretty cheap cards that are better than the one you're using.
