Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 AGP + Win7 x64 = Code 43

Hi all,

I know that the Sapphire card has recvd a lot of attention in the forums which made me register here. My m'board is Gigabyte GA-K8U-939 with Athlon X2 2.6 GHz and 3GB DDR. Windows 7 x64 detected the card but had an yellow symbol with the status code 43. Aero could not be enabled because of that. A poster torrentg seems to have sorted out this particular issue for a lot of people. I tried all his suggestions but the code 43 exists. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your reply. I did try that earlier and the driver gets loaded. The only difference between that poster and mine was that the driver NEVER defaulted to standard VGA early and after torrentg's "hotfix" which worked out for him, for me however there is a little icon with an exclamation point and the status says code 43 "Windows cannot load the driver". I tried to see whether I got a dud card by installing it in XP x64, and it works flawless with the latest drivers, so the card is not fritz. I will be running 3DMark to check just in case, but I am confident the problem is with Vista/Win7.

As per one post I installed 9.10 instead of 9.11 and the system went into a restart-before-login loop with an occasional BSOD. I might have to clean install Win7 again. Also, the vendor id for my card is 9505 not 9515. That's a bit curious. Lex

Code43 means your motherboard is too old. Probably an nForce3 or below.

What you can do is try to update your chipset/motherboard drivers to latest. Update the bios to latest. Then, disable all unused ports in the bios like floppy, serial, parallel, com etc...

Hi Legacy, Thanks for you reply. Judging by the posts, I realized that nForce3 boards cannot run Win7. But my chipset is Uli-M1689 and the drivers are now released by nVidia as an integrated driver set. Let me upgrade the AGP with those drivers and I will update the post. Lex

If you have an AGP card, you'll need to use these drivers Catalyst AGP Hotfix - Radeon HD 4000 Radeon HD 3000 and Radeon HD 2000 Series AGP products

If you go to this page Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD and put in your info, under "Product Model" you'll need to choose "Radeon HD 3000 Series AGP" if your card is APG. It will then take you to the link I provided above. These drivers are for AGP cards.

The AGP hotfix has been around for quite some time now. I would imagine the Win7 driver was added during the beta days.

You and the Syngus are wrong about this. Error 43 means that the graphics card is not communicating with the motherboard correctly. To remedy, a chipset and/or bios update is necessary, depending on the board and drivers loaded. This is why nForce3 or below gets error 43 in Vista and 7. Please see here:

I see all that, but it doesn't mean error 43 reports that way for all cases. Error 43 reports only when there is a driver issue and the driver can't load. You are right for pointing out that support for nForce3 was dropped but wrong to tell the OP that error 43 means his board is too old. I'm sorry but part of helping an op out would telling him the why's correctly.

IE:
Error 43 reports a driver loading issue because support was dropped in nForce3 as of vista. So because support was dropped you'll have driver issues.

NOWHERE do I say it's to old, it's like saying SBL is to old. Yeah support was dropped, but here I am using it. I just really don't like it when people twist meanings to how they want it to be said.

Please show me where I mentioned anything about the error 43 code? (other then my reply to you)

I was out of town so could not reply to all of you. First of all thanks to everyone who took the time to help me out. I have fixed the problem but before I explain it, let me address some of the posts here. Regarding the AGP hotfix driver, I have been using that right from the beginning so I knew that was not the issue. Regarding the small disagreements with the posters here, all of you are in a way correct: the motherboard was not communicating to the card properly and it could be because of the drivers. Since that was suggested earlier, I decided to look into it and realized that my chipset was ULi M1689. My board is Gigabyte, but ASrock released a patch for their 939 board (ftp://download.asrock.com/drivers/ULi/AGP/ULi_AGP_Patch.zip) which carried the same chipset for graphics issues with vista. Lo behold, it worked!

All that is required is that after clean install of Win7, run the patch and the install the CCC with the driver. That's it!

I hope this is useful to someone else. This forum has been great and thanks to you guys for all your time.

I was out of town so could not reply to all of you. First of all thanks to everyone who took the time to help me out.
