Hi,

I have a Sapphire Radeon HD3850 AGP card in my system but windows will not install the driver from the latest release of the ATI Catalyst driver install. Instead it defaults to the Standard VGA

From what i have read on these forums i may need to change some information the CH87739.inf file for the driver.

The device is of my product is 9515. (see attatched pic.)

I see a memeber called torrentg had posted a modified .inf file but the download limit has been reached. Is there any chance of posting again? Or perhaps positing its contents into the replay.

All help will be much appreciated.

PS. Im running windows 7 64-Bit

Reagrds,
cwelbour.

and fill out your system specs too.

you need to manually install the drivers. i have the same card. I don't use the ccc either. AND i might plan on going back to windopws xp since for me windows 7 is slowing corrupting itself, meaning some stuff i used to do fine is now tweaked and not working.

I'm not familiar with the 64 bit drivers but you can be sure the technique is the same.

Download the 64 bit, latest Catalyst driver from ATI. Run the install and allow it to extract to C:\ATI...

Open the .inf with CL in its name in notepad. It's inside the extracted packages\drivers\display folder.

Now in the [ATI.Mfg.NTx86.6.0] section, copy and paste to add this line:

"ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP" = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9515

Hit ctrl+s to save it. Close notepad. Open device manager. Right click on the video card. Update driver software. Browse my computer. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse.

Now find the .inf you just edited and saved. If it complains that the driver is unsigned, tell it to install anyway.

After, run setup.exe in extracted folder to get CCC. Tell us how it went. Good luck.

Or you could just download the hotfix version of the driver from ATI lol. This doesn't need manual install and will install all through the setup.exe. The above technique is good for beta releases mostly, involving the 3850, dev id 9515. They never include us in those.

It Works! Thanks torrentg,

I edited the C7_87739.inf from
C:\ATI\Support\9-9_vista64_win7_64_dd\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\ file as there wasn't one starting with CL

I pasted the following line as instructed under the following header in the file: [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]

"ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP" = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9515

Saved the file and then manually installed by pointing to the .inf file

I accepted that it wasn't certified and continued.

The system loaded the card, and required a reboot. After that it was listed in the device manager and working. I re-ran the Experience index, and it is now reading 6.1 rather than 1.0

I tried the hotfix, but there is no release for Windows 7 x64.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards,

cwelbour

heh heh ya R2l. I realized my mistake on that as well but elected to leave it alone because I said the technique is the same. Not exactly same. Semantics. :D Anyway, he said he used the correct section for x64. It wouldn't have damaged anything physically if he didn't.

You're welcome Cwelbour. Glad to have another 3850 up and running well.

Thanks,

r2l I am capable of telling the differences between x86 and amd64.
Plus it was the 64Bit driver package, so it wouldn't contain a 32Bit driver would it.

Edit: On further analysis, your motherboard has a Southbridge chipset of NVIDIA® nForce3 250.

nForce3 is incompatible with ATI AGP cards, unfortunately. That is why your blue screen has happened. There is no way to get the 3850 to work on your machine.
I have the same problem (with exact settings)...
Everything you told in this forums I read and tried... EVERYTHING!!!

And after all you are saying it is FUTILE!!!... :(

So I understand windows 7 and my rig will not work...
what about vista... Last time my brother tried to install it he had freezes and he had to revert back to XP... Should I try again?

Thanks for your advices... been reading your posts and it was delight.

Edit: Read a little about vista... Does not supported as well... There is a workaround to make it better but still... nForce3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks for your help again.

NVidia does not support Vista or 7 with that chipset, hence there never was a driver made for it that will work on these operating systems. This means that if you want graphics acceleration, you must use Windows XP.

This is not Microsoft's fault or Windows Vista/7 fault in any way. It is NVidia that decided to move your chipset to legacy standing a long time ago.

I'm sorry. Unless NVidia cards somehow get around the incompatibility, you can not run any card at all with acceleration in Windows 7 or XP.

My educated guess is that there are no video cards that can do that and it is impossible. I could be wrong, I admit. But I don't think so.

So, with your computer to run graphics well on any level, you must use Windows XP.

Windows Vista Incompatibility

"Even using nforce3 with an Nvidia card causes it to only negotiate AGP 4x not 8x, and causes the system to restart repeatedly.[citation needed] There are however workarounds allowing the use of the Windows XP 32bit nForce3 GART driver under Vista 32bit, allowing use of AGP8x, and providing a more stable system."

nForce3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My sincere advice to you is to upgrade to a new system as soon as you possibly can. I feel bad that you can't enjoy a new OS like the rest of us, but it's not within my control to do anything about it.

That being said, you could perhaps locate that GART driver and give it the good ol' college try. Or install Windows XP.
