Backup fails with error 0x8007007B

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and for the past week or so my system has
been getting this error 0x8007007B and quitting when doing a daily backup. Today it
looked as if it was going to finish with no error. It got all the way to 70 something %
done and then it got this error 0x8007007B and said it could not complete and to try
again. I only have C: listed once - Local Disk (C: (System) Protection On.

I have searched and searched and cannot find a solution to this backup error.
I even deleted the backup set that it was using so it would create a new one and it
still gets this error and quits.
Does anyone have a solution to this? I would like to be backing up my HD as I have a 1TB USB drive just for this purpose.
Thanks in advance!

I didn't have the exact same error, but since you've already deleted your previous backup set you could try this,Brinks tutorial to reset your backup to default and start over,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...-files-reset-default-configuration.html?ltr=B
I don't know if this will solve it or not but if look around here there seems to be several different backup problems that I've noticed but not exactly the same one I had. I hope this helps, if not I'm sure a more qualified person will be along soon. D.:)

Thanks! I downloaded the registry thing and merged it.
I rebooted and deleted the old backup folder and image on my USB drive.
It is doing a backup now.
I will let you know if it worked.
Thanks for taking the time!!!

Well, after running for a very long time and looking like it was going to finish,
it ends with the exact same error 0x8007007B.
Thanks for trying derekimo!
Does anyone else have a resolution for this problematic error?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, but this showed only one C: drive as I mentioned in my original post.
My USB drive where I backup to shows this:

I hope this helps.

I had 3 drives listed and unplugged 1 of them to see if there was a 2nd C drive
listed, but there was not. Only one C: drive and there is no check boxes beside
any of them. There is a column on the right that says Protection. And under it
the C: drive is the only one with yes listed.

I search and this was occuring on Vista systems. It appears the only answer was
the double listing of the C drive and I do not have that issue.
Is there no answer for this error on Windows 7 Home Premium X64?:what:

That is the answer? To download another vendor's free software?
I seen that being offered as a solution to this problem when I was searching for a fix.

The (1st one) Macrium does not provide incremental and differential back-up capability,
which I consider very important. The reviews on this product were not all that impressive either.

The 2nd one Paragon free edition is about the same as the 1st.

The problem may be that they are free, and if I were going to pay to get another
vendor's software, I would go for Acronis True Image Home 2010 available for $49.95.
However, I feel that I should not have to spend more money on this problem.

I consider regular backing up one's data to be a very, very important task and up until a short while ago,
my Windows 7 64 bit OS was doing that.

How about fixing the MS Windows 7 backup program? I am not using an RC
version of Windows 7, this is a purchased version and I would hope MS would
support it.

Windows 7 is advertised as having the capability of backing up data on a scheduled basis and I believe it should do so.

I am not trying to be rude or anything, but I really like Windows 7 and I believe
Microsoft should fix this problem. I will continue searching for and trying to fix this
thing myself, but judging by the amount of solutions found so far, I doubt I will be able to.
I thought maybe my C: drive was too fragmented as I had not defragmented it since it was installed, but even that did not help.

Wow! It came close to finishing before it got the same error - 0x8007007B.
I logged on as administrator this time and followed derekimo's procedures for
resetting the backup to default. It ran for about 2 hours and got at least 87%
done before it got the same error.

There is no other solution out there, because if it isn't on the 1st page of Google
results, it is not going to be there period.
The only fix I saw was the already suggested double listing of C: drive and another
perosn mentioning to use Acronis...

OK, I tried something that I thought might help and installed the previous
version of Ubuntu's bootloader program Grub. I had seen somewhere like on page 3
of google search for "Windows 7 error 0x8007007B" that the problem had something
to do with the fact that the windows drive was not "active".

But that did not work as I logged in as administrator, reset your backup to default
as derekimo had suggested, but still to no avail! I hope someone can come up with
a solution pretty quick that doesn't involve spending more money on someone
else's software. I still cannot backup my files!!!

I feel your frustration cavsfan, when I searched google for my error code it also led me right back to my post here. It would seem that there are as many error codes as there are people who get them. I wish I had an answer for you besides a 3rd party software which sounds like what most people prefer to do. I am close to doing a clean install just to be done with that error code. Anyway good luck with yours and sorry the reset deal didn't work for you.

Hi ,

Sorry you are having that trouble. If you want to make an image right now - for safety - at least until you ( hopefully) get Windows Sys Img working, you might try one of the apps. I suggested.

Macrium Does incremental /differential with the paid version ( not with the free one ).

No idea what reviews you refer to - I have used Macrium extensively, it is an excellent program and all the reviews I have seen have been extremely positive.

Paragon B&R10 Free - does differential image backup - ( you need the paid version for separate file/folder backup, Virtualization Manager, WinPe cd , etc.) The Paragon products are superb - I currently have the DB10 Server Edition.

The free versions of either will at least do an image now , so you have something to fall back on if necessary.

Thanks Derek, Tara and SIW2!
At least I know someone is looking into this problem.
I absolutely do not want to do a fresh install. I believe that would be a last resort.
Even though the data backup (user files) itself fails with this error, I was able to
create a system repair disc via Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore.

Hopefully, some smart person there at Microsoft will be able to identify what issue will
cause error 0x8007007B on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
I had not seen this error before and did not know that Vista users also had
encountered this error.
The only 2 solutions on the web (forums, search engines, etc.) that I have found
(which pertain to Vista) refer to either one of these 2:
1) "Complete backup does NOT work if Vista system partition is not Active. So
3rd party boot managers effectively DISABLE Complete PC Backup"

2) the other is about a check box being beside "C: Missing" instead of "Local Disk C:"
In Windows 7 there is no check box where there apparently was with Vista.

Even though I set Ubuntu to use an older bootup manager, can anyone tell me how to
determine if the windows 7 partition is "active"? I got into Disk Management and
when I right click on C:, the option to "Mark partition as active" is greyed out, which
I take as it is already active. Would this be correct?

Thanks for each of your responses, I appreciate it and hope some one can figure this out.
I cannot be the only one in the world with this problem.

Hi Cavsfan,
You are quite right, the backup system is or should be an integral part of Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have pretty well the same problem using the 32-bit system, Windows 7 Home premium in my case was purchased as an upgrade to the Vista system which was pre-loaded onto the Acer X1300 machine purchased just over a month ago.
As the upgrade was supplied by Acer support is provided (!?) by them, not Microsoft.
I have experienced an unbelievably poor level of support from Acer, it was so bad that I finished up Writing to the CEO enclosing 7 printed pages of the dreadful incompetent e-mail advice that I had endured and suggested that he "Knock some heads together " and sort it out.
A week after I wrote I received a letter from Acer`s complaints dept. apologising and telling me that I have been assigned a "Case Officer" charged with resolving the problem within 10 working days (sounds like something out of a John Lecarre` novel, "The computer that came in from the cold " ? )
That was 3 days ago, I await developments and will keep you posted.

Regards Peter
