There's just so many to choose from.

I guess I'm just looking for a personal version & a free one would be nice.

So which one do I want?

They do not have a free one, it is a 30 day trial. Use your judgement, to decide which is for you. Do not like it, notify and you do not have to pay.

While Acronis True Image Home 2010 is not free, both Amazon.com and NewEgg.com recently were selling it for $23.99.

While I do like the Windows 7 "system image" utility, there is more functionality with a product like Acronis and for $23.99 was a worthwhile investment. I've already gotten my monies worth out of the product. The Try and Decide functionality is worth it alone if you like to play, take chances or otherwise experiment with something.

That's what I have....my computer's builder has been using the Acronis programs for quite a while, and he got this while he was setting my machine up.

Even I have been able to successfully and consistently do proper back-ups onto my external drive with this program, both of the OS partition(C: ) , and the data partition (D: )....and I'm not exactly an IT professional;)

I already posted an answer, but my opinion has changed. I just got the free version of Paragon. The link is in the Chill Room, as of 2 or 3 days, ago. It works great. Just because something is free, does not make it more valuable, than something that is bought.

It'll be cripplied in some regards, at the very least it'll only work with WD hardware.

Acronis TrueImage 2010 can be found for under $50, and it's worth far more, one of the most essential pieces of software your computer should have! ;)

There also is a free version of Acronis for users of Seagate drives. I think it's called, disk wizard or something like that.

But I use the full version of Acronis TIH 2010 to both clone my main hard drive and also make scheduled compressed image backups (.tib archives) and think it's a pretty great app for those purposes. With the new "plus pack" add on for Acronis, one can (supposedly, haven't tested the feature yet) even restore a backup archive made on one machine to completely different hardware. If it works well, this could possibly be a very easy way to migrate to a different machine.

I also use Microsofts SychToy 2.1 (free) that was mentioned earlier above for backing up various specific folders. It's an awesome little tool that is very easy to use and very fast.

Seagate have 2 versions of the "free" Acronis.

Diskwizard and Maxblast - they are the same as the WD "free" version - they have different gui's of course.

They work ok on 7 - had a problem with Diskwizard boot disc refusing to acknowledge the presence of their drive and was unable to restore from it. Maybe that was peculiar to my system.

The "free" ones use the same engine as the paid version - but only some of the functions are available. Manual image and restore, and cloning - no scheduling , or differential, sadly.

Macrium and Paragon free versions have a lot more to offer and are not restricted to certain drive brands.

If you are looking for a paid product - only you can decide.

They all differ somewhat in what they do and offer - you may get a deal that makes one more attractive than the others, - the support varies from truly exceptional with Paragon - to very good for Macrium to ...

At least there is plenty of choice.

I haven't tried the Acronis plus - pack - I believe that is an extra cost option.

I have used the Paragon Adaptive restore ( included with the paid versions - no extra charge) and it is excellent.

I have tried all of these that are mentioned and have been let down at least one time by all of them with the exception of the paragon programs. But as mentioned above you should try the ones that interest you and then make a sound decision.

As for Acronis TIH 2010, stay well clear of this app, it completely 'trashed' my system. I had to re-image my system drive from a backup. I then tried another procedure to uninstall 2009 then load/install 2010, though, it did work, the backups took forever compared to Acronis TIH 2009!
i.e the same 500GB backup in Acronis 2009 took 3.5 hours to complete wheras Acronis 2010 listed the time to complete for the same size backup as 40,710 days!!!!!!!!!!!

To confirm, have a look at the Acronis Support Forums - a complete disaster - more like an 'epic fail'!

I currently run Acronis TIH 2009 and works as designed, no glitches it just does not support Dynamic disks, but that's fine with me!
