I have my LaserJet 1200 connected to a Vista computer on a wired network with a Windows 7 computer. Printer works fine with the Vista that is directly connected, but I can't get it to work with the Win 7 computer. I added the driver and the printer does show up on the Win 7 computer, but it won't print.

It may be a problem with the port. When setting it up, it asked me the port name and I used the same port name that is on the Vista computer, which is DOT4_001. Do I use a different port name with the Win 7 computer? What could be the problem?

If we're talking about a local port then the port name would take the form of \\TheVistaMachineName\TheShareNameOfThePrinterOnTheVistaMachine
If we're talking about TCP print the port name should auto populate in the box imediately below the box where you type in the Hosts IP address.
If we're talking about a TCP port that you've reconfigured for LPR printer usually something like PORT1 will do.
Hope this helps
Regards
Randy

No, the printer is not USB. I've had it for a long time, probably since about 2003.
On the Vista that it is directly connected to, the port is DOT4_001. I tried using that port for the Win7, and that didn't work, so I tried changing the WIN7 port to LPT1, and that didn't work either.
The printer does show up under my Devices, but I just can't get it to print with the Win7.

If someone could take me through, step by step, on how to get this set up, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the link, Pat. I got to the place where I enter the port name and I got an error message, "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password." I don't think I have a password on my Vista (the one that the printer is connected to) or the Win 7 computer either. I never use a password to get onto the computer. I tried to find where I might have put in a password and can't find it. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Is it possible that you have some third party firewall software or perhaps some third party AntiVirus / Internet Security Suite on the machine that is hosting the printer that may be causing this issue? If so you can always try to temporarily uninstall them for testing purposes and put them back later. Also make sure that you have Network Discovery turned on and check to see if you have any instances of the bonjour service or mdnsresponder running on the host or for that matter anywhere on your network and take a look at the services.msc console and see if at or near the top you have a service with a peculiar string with a bunch of numbers that looks kinda like a GUID, if so stop it and set it to disable and do some research about uninstalling bonjour on the internet.

I disabled my McAfee firewall network protection and got the same "Network Name cannot be found." Below is the cut and pasted instruction list I got from the thread that is mentioned above. Under #2, it says to make sure you can "see" the printer share on the Network Browing. This may be the problem. When I pull up the network I only see the Win 7 computer and the Vista computer, but not the printer. At this point, since I can't see the printer on the network, what do I do? The printer did show up on the devices list on the Win 7 computer, but I have now removed it so I can start over in the process. The downloaded driver is still installed in my Documents folder. Thanks again for your help.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your Windows 7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the Windows 7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the Windows 7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now Windows 7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.
