System Restore never creates 'am system checkpoint'

I haven't seen any daily restore points made on either the 32bit or 64bit 7000 builds. The problem with the performance and reliability section sounds like you saw a bad burn to disk not seeing everything fully placed there by the burning program you used at the time or something simply didn't go on fully during the install itself.

This was observed right after a clean install and before anything else was done.

I presume this is the reason I dont get a daily system restore and maybe why the reliability monitor is not working.

Windows 7 x64

Anybody seen this or have a solution.
these two services are vital to system operation and as such will trigger a shutdown or a BSOD (i remember that happend once) if you close/kill/terminate these two services....
this has been in vista and 7 and XP all the way leading to 2000 (these two services are in xp/2000 but i forget if you can stop them...:geek:)

It works. Through my aforementioned manipulation, I now have daily Restore Points being created automatically. But since I have my security settings on normal, I still have to click 'allow' or whatever when the Instant Restore Point runs. Oh well, anything is better than having to remember to create Restore Points on my own.

Now it will just pop up once a day in the morning and I just have to click the sucker. No biggie. It's just like when I get a chat from a friend.

Did you right click on the startup folder and find target to drag the shortcut in there? I was about to give that one a try since I boot into XP every so often and don't want to forget clicking the shortcut on the next boot of 7 or Vista for that matter.

Hi there
probably not the answer you want -- but I'd forget the system Restore point etc.

Use some imaging software like GHOST or Acronis -- my favourite is Acronis (Backup software for data backup and disaster recovery in Windows and Linux - Acronis)

You can backup partitions, data, clone disks etc etc.

what's even nicer is that you can create bootable restore media so you can recover anything even if your hard disks go totally AWOL.

I use this a lot when testing softwrae -- some programs especially Anti-Virus software are a real pig to uninstall and mess up the registry --it's much easier to restore the entire OS again (takes around 15 - 25mins for an average system).

cheers
jimbo

My understanding is that Windows 7 changed automatic restore points to occur only of a restore point has not been made in 7 days.

Restore Points (Windows)

You'll note Vista saw 24hrs. unless one had been created and XP automatically saw on regardless. 7 will use less drive space on a smaller hard drive as you will note from that before replacing old for new.

I would have to drag the instant restore point shortcut into the startup folder. Now I have 28 instead of seeing 3 or 4 in just a few days!:geek:

Hello Night Hawk.

I'm sure you know about this, but I'll list the tutorial for others that don't, at the link below.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/335-system-protection-change-disk-space-usage.html?ltr=S

Later ;) Ted

You're right! I already know that you can change the amount of drive space reserved for restore points in XP and Vista as well. You can also custom assign the drive or partition they will go to.

With multibooting going on here the idea of dragging the IRPoint shortcut into the "Start>All programs>startup>properties>location>find target>startup folder" solves a need to hide the Vista or 7 primary from XP or make them inaccessible but see ready access while booted in XP. The worry about not having any restore points later is solved on the first boot back into Vista or 7 seeing a brand new point created.

The thing is I will never need more then one or two if that here. I found that one a little on the humerous side seeing 28 instead of 4 or 5. :D

HMMM
I too am dual booting XP and W7 and was confused as to why restore points kept disappearing.
My question is : does anyone know if this creation of a restore point only if none has been made in 7 days will be included in the GA of W7?
I hope not. I think an option to turn off this feature so that you would be able to automatically create regular/daily restore points would be more sensible.

The answer to that one is simple. When dual booting XP with either Vista or 7 the restore points for the newer version are deleted once you boot into XP. Restore points themselves are cleared out every so often depending on how drive space has been reserved. Once that space fills up Windows clears it out for seeing new ones replace the old.

As far as the option to turn off the system restore feature that's still seen in the 7 RCs. Note that from the image here.

I was just checking for reasons why there are no scheduled automatci restore points and Google lead me to that sam MSDN page.

Scheduled restore points
System Restore can be configured to create restore points at regular intervals. Users can also manually create and name a restore point at any time from within the System Restore user interface. These restore points are saved and compressed, and these choices are available to the user through the System Restore user interface. System Restore in Windows 7 creates a scheduled restore point only if no other restore points have been created in the last 7 days. System Restore in Windows Vista creates a checkpoint every 24 hours if no other restore points were created that day. System Restore in Windows XP creates a checkpoint every 24 hours of absolute time.

I guess I can confirm that this setting is in force in the RTM version too. I guess it's another way 7 is trying to reduce unnecessary disk usage.

Since Windows Defender downloads updates in intervals shorter than 7 days, I guess there is not much chance I will see any scheduled restore points (unless I make Defender not create them).

For me it seems almost every time I install or uninstall a program, or run windows update, system restore automatically creates a restore point. I end up getting at least one restore point per day without my scheduling anything or manually creating them. But I install and uninstall stuff a lot.

I had to turn it off entirely here with all the updates and each new program being tried out! The main drive was simply filling up too fast! for a variety of reasons besides those of course! :D

Once I get a 2tb drive in for 7 then I'll simply use the manual option when about to see any large number of updates or other things go on. That only takes a minute or so.
