And I'm not sure the ground it's on, if it's protected or not.

BUt i'd say keep a backup copy, just in-case you need it back.

I do not recommend deleting the sounds, simply disable them and save the "theme" with a custom name. You can always switch it back if you need to, and the possibility of Windows bugging you with errors about not finding those sound files is 0.

It was not a problem to start with, and I bet that you'll regret it.

@sReKcAh - In the sound schemes you can change any default windows sound with a custom file. i don't know how much changed in 7, but back in the XP days it only supported WAV files up to 30 seconds long. Have a look at this tutorial

For anyone who wants to get rid of the annoying windows sounds, here is what you have to do.

1.Go to accessories and right click on the windows command prompt and click on run as administrator.
2.Once the command prompt is up enter (or copy and past) this command:

TAKEOWN /f "%SystemRoot%\Media\Windows Navigation Start.wav" /a
CACLS "%SystemRoot%\Media\Windows Navigation Start.wav" /E /G Administrators:F
DEL /Q "%SystemRoot%\Media\Windows Navigation Start.wav"

3. Push Enter and the wav file is deleted from your system.

This is one the the first thing I do when setting up a new workstation(I get really annoyed by some of the sounds).

*note this will delete it permanently.

Been running Win 7 for Two years with the Media Folder absolutely, irrevocably vaporised. No problems.

Remember to Uncheck "Play Windows Sounds at Start-up" (below the "Program Events Window" or second from the bottom).
Otherwise Windows still haunts you with their pre-schooler's start up jingle.

Drove me nuts till I realised. Really. Still getting counseling.
