I have a Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB GDDR3, AGP 8x, in my backup rig. It was a show stopper as far as windows 7 was concerned. ATI doesn't seem to want to support the AGP versions of these cards so update drivers are a pain to find. 9.7 XP NW is the latest I have saved to disk. Not sure if I got them from Visiontek or after hunting around on the ATI site. I couldn't use them anyway and let windows 7 look online for drivers. It did find some and installed them but after the reboot they didn't work and device manager showed some error number that I can't remember at this time. I gave up and went back to XP on that PC. From looking at that link posted ATI have newer modded drivers so I will definitely download them and have a look. I'll be watching this thread to see if you get your 2600 working. I wish you good luck.

I installed the windows XP 32 bit ATI hotfix driver on my XP box. Initially I got an error when I ran setup.exe from the folder I extracted it too, but running the file as downloaded worked OK. Don't forget to un-install the previous drivers before you try installing the newer ones. There is a utility on ATI's site for removing the catalyst drivers if you really want to clean things out. I was waiting to see how you made out before I tried installing 7 on my backup PC again. The onboard sound doesn't work on that PC and 7 doesn't like my sound blaster live 5.1 sound card so I'm not in a big hurry to try 7 again on that PC.

Everything is PCIe now so AGP is a dying breed. Your motherboard driver disk was made before windows 7 so it likely won't install anything. You might even get a confusing error message because it can't figure out what OS you are running. Same thing with the driver disk for your video card. I always look for the latest and greatest driver online as the ones on the disk in the box are almost always out or date. The best place to go first should be the actual manufacturer of said device. For me Visiontek made my 2600XT and for a while i could get current drivers on there support web site. Eventually they stopped updating the driver for my card and i went to ATI and found out why. ATI in its infinite wisdom decided that it didn't want to support the AGP versions of a lot of it's chip sets. If you looked up the 2600 you could get PCIe Catalyst drivers but not AGP. Eventually I guess enough people complained and they started putting out the hot fix drivers. They weren't the latest and greatest but they were better than what I was using. They weren't all that easy to find on there web site either. Anyway those are the ones I use. I haven't had any blue screens or other problems that I know of from using them. I play games on that PC so I wanted something better than the default XP drivers. I've tried windows 7 on that PC 2 or 3 times now and always had problems with compatibility as far as video and sound. In the end I went back to XP. I do think I am going to give it one more try though. While browsing this forum I found a link to some modified drivers for my Sound Blaster 5.1 that are supposed to work on windows 7. I also downloaded the windows 7 hot fix drivers linked to in this thread so I "should" be good to go. It probably won't happen until at least the weekend or early next week. I'll post back to this thread once I'm done with the results. Fingers crossed.

Well I just gave it one more go trying to install Windows 7 on my backup PC. Good news is I now have sound, bad news is even after installing the hot fix drivers I get a code 43 error in device manager for my 2600XT and no Aero. After screwing around trying to fix it, it now won't boot into windows. I've wimped out again and I'm now re-installing XP. :(

Put in a new GPU such as cheap Sapphire 4350 if you don't play games - if you only have AGP slots I'd just build a new PC.

I've got a new PC, its a 2.60GHz AMD Athlon II X4 620 Quad Core based system running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The one I've been talking about in this thread is my old system I had before that. It's an Athlon XP +3200 based system with AGP graphics. It's no big deal if its running XP, it just would have been nice to get 7 running on it.

I could but I just put XP back on that PC. I was hoping I might get my 2600 working with windows 7 and in doing so maybe help Dylematic with his problem.
