A few HDD questions

If I put the new HDD into the first slot and move my old HDD to the second slot, will I still boot up to the OS?

Also, I want to clone my old hard drive and transfer the data to my new hard drive. Will everything work the same as it did previously?

To have a pop at your question, I don't think it would as I would imagine slot one will be configured to be the master, so if you pop it in slot two it will just show as a storage drive.

I took your advice on the hard drive, I think I'd like something with more power than a Caviar Green Drive.

Does anyone know when newegg refunds your money after canceling an order? It didn't ship yet and was at the "Charged" stage.

I would imagine you're going to need it in slot one to be able to clone it in the first place as it will have your OS on it, so you'd need to put your new one in slot two first before switching them round.
By clone I assume you mean you want to take an image to save reinstalling everything?

It is the better option imo, faster is usually better.

SATA drives don't have master/slave relationships.

I never pay much attention to what SATA connector I use and have never run into any issues. Worst case scenario, you would just swap connectors at the motherboard end of the connection.

I wouldn't expect the connector to have any effect on cloning either, as long as the operating system sees the destination drive.

I was able to cancel my order and newegg replied that it would take 3 to 5 business days to refund my money. Does anyone know if they send you another confirmation email stating that they have refunded the money?

You can use either cloning or imaging for your purposes to move an OS to another drive.

One might be preferred over the other depending on your situation.

What size is your original hard drive and what size is each partition on it?

What size is the new drive and what size do you want to make each partition on it?

Newegg is generally very good with email, so I would guess you will be kept up to date.

This hard drive is 160 GB, only one partition. The new drive is 1 TB. Maybe a few 200 GB partitions for dual booting.

ok, when you get the new drive, register it to get the cloning software. you can clone to a larger drive no problem and vice-versa depending upon how large the installation is and how small the new drive actually is.

In that case, I would image not clone.

I am virtually positive that the WD/Acronis app mentioned by the previous poster will work for you----as I recall, the destination drive must be WD, but the source drive can be anything--such as Hitachi.

Imaging usually works, but be prepared for it to fail badly.

I'd make my new partitions as desired on the new drive before attempting any imaging. Since you have only 1 partition on the current drive, you would make an image of the Hitachi, save that image to a partition on the WD, and then restore that image to your chosen OS partition on the WD.

I noticed the difference in a 5400 and 7200, and know which I'd prefer to run my OS on.

sorry, not trying to confuse terms. i must say that i've never used the acronis app and i have used macrium with one success and one failure. the success was moving to a larger drive in a laptop running windows xp and the failure was trying to move to a larger drive in a desktop running vista.

Macrium has always worked perfectly for me , so has Paragon .

The WD Acronis app. you mention can be downloaded by anybody - no need to register. But you must have at least one WD drive to use it.

Seagate DiskWizard is the same app. - again , anyone can download , but it will only work if you have at least one Seagate/Maxtor drive.

They seem to work ok.

You don't get clone function in the free Macrium and Paragon apps. - you can make an image with them as suggested , and restore it to the drive you wish to use.
